I would welcome help regarding a one night stay close to Santander. We are towing a caravan and are new to it! We arrive at 5.30 pm Jan 7th 2017. We are then driving to Barcelona. Any other tips would be gratefully received too!

thank you

Camping Derby Loredo looks to be the nearest. Bon voyage.

We came in on the ferry which was 5 hrs late and this site knew about it and stayed open (4 other outfits also arrived)

    http://www.cabomayor.com/index.php

It's the closest to the ferry (10 min) and IMHO good for at least an overnight stop. We stayed 3 nights and visited Santander beach front area and Bilbao before moving on to Madrid.

On the way back we stopped at Picos De Europa

    http://www.picos-europa.com/

which is an easy trip for your return ferry (if from Santander) or we had very good reports about Caravanning Oyambre.

You'll have to check they are open of course.

Cabo Mayor isn't open and Oyambre is in the opposite direction to Barcelona.

Here's one that's definitely open according to its website.  It's about 45 minutes away, but a bit off the motorway to Barcelona.  However, remember to allow up to an hour or so to disembark, so you probably don't want to drive too far as it will be getting
dark.  Also get an ACSI card.

    CaboDeAjo

We have a motorhome and have stayed at the Aire at Cabarceno which is about half an hour away.  Although they are meant for motorhomes it would probably be ok for a caravan as at that time of year it wont be busy.

There's another aire more on your route at Vitoria-Gasteiz which is in a huge car park near the town centre.  You could overnight in the carpark which is perfectly safe.  It's about 2 hours away on motorways.

Grand Camping Zarautz is open all year, its about 2 hours drive east towards San Sebastian but is not far from the motorway south through Zaragoza to Barcelona. Its website is www.grancampingzarautz.com. we have stayed there several times and would recommend
    it.
