French Washroom Facilities

As SteveL rightly pointed out my OP was not a moan but more of a surprise observation as it was our first time abroad with the caravan. When I originally looked through the 'First time abroad' posts I didn't notice any hints and tips on this subject (before
I get replies on that I wasn't looking for them either but would have noticed if I'd come across such a post). Finally, I'm pleased to see the amount of correspondence I have generated and the many varied stories and opinions expressed. That's what this forum is all about after all.
Thanks for all your contributions!

I think the reason most of us don't mention the washroom differences, is that we've got so used to them! You are right, though, and I think it needs bringing to people's attention.
I've highlighted some of the differences in facilities in the Tips for First-Timers post pinned at the top of this section of the forum

I don't think you would be alone in making the same observations as a first time visitor. For all the wonderful things there are about France and their campsites I somehow doubt that toilet blocks would be considered worthy of promotion in any publicity
campaign on all but a few campsites?David

I've noticed seats are also noticeable by their absence nowadays in French Autoroute loos, in favour of wide rimmed pans.
I'm sure they used to have them! Must be a new thing.
As regards the dreaded push button showers, CC&C showers are usually that sort.
I have not seen any of the shower type where you have to hang onto a chain recently! Those were interesting.

I've been told in the last day or two that the French 'seatless' loos are ergonomically designed so that 'functions' are easier because you sit lower! (And I don't mean the squatting ones)!
Apparently if you sit more in a squatting position, rather than as if you were on a chair (which you tend to do on a seatless toilet as the diameter is bigger) then your internal bits are more naturally lined up for what you're there for! (Sorry if this
is too much information).I know the French obsession with things like this, so it could be true.
See here for an amusing description: Ergonomic loo design

More informative than amusing. Hemorrhoids are a PITA.

the last thing we look for when visiting anywhere (france, uk, anywhere....) is 'the state of the toilets'.....
...i mean, for those that obsess about the state of site latrines, how long are you actually in one......and if your one of
those who 'is worried' that a place doesnt come up to 'CC stds' (whatever that is) just use your van toilet....and as for getting dressed just to use someone else's loo.....no thanks, thats what the van is for.....

It's one of the first things I look at. If the site owner/management can't be bothered to keep the most basic hygene facility clean then I'm not sure that I want to give them my custom.

I agree - dirty and smelly toilets indicate a lack of care and concern. Immaculate toilets usually indicates a well run and well cared for site, with staff who are conscientious about cleaning properly (I was going to say 'do a proper job' but perhaps not!)
