Which site is best on the Ile d'Oleron?

We plan on taking a week on the Ile d'Oleron and would welcome opinions from caravanners who have stayed there as to which in their view is the best site and why.

You might like Camping les Lauriers at the northern tip of the island - at St Denis village  -  and away from the marshy/mosquito side of the island.

I was really hoping we could find an ACSI site and I don't think that one is.  Is it the east coast that has mozzie problems?

By all means - there are lots of ACSI sites there and you will save a few euros at them if that's important to you. I was simply recommending a site in a convenient location which I thought you might like. I hope it goes well.

We liked the municipal (Les Dunes) at Le Grand Village but it would be too basic for some.

We don't mind basic if its well located.  Pitch size and location are most important.  David sends his regards and best wishes by the way.  We hope you and Elektra are both well.

Just had a look on the
    French Municipal Sites
link but can only find Municipal Les Pins not Municipal Les Dunes.  Do you think this is the same place with a name change?

We are heading also to il D'Oleron in a few weeks time and I had also wondered exactly  the same question. We are after an ACSI site too and had thought the Gros Jncs might be good especially the location. If you happen to find one that you like and maybe
have time to offe a bit of feedback that would be great.......enjoy your holiday.

Thanks Desimondo.  At the moment the weather forecast is not good but I think we will go anyway as we only live a few hours south.  Will let you know what we find.

We're back from Ile d'Oleron today after a long weekend.  We looked at Camping Les Lauriers recommended by Eurotraveller but found it a little cramped with statics and access round the site with our 2.3m wide unit was only just possible because of the trees
lining the road.  We looked at Camping La Campiere on the other side of the island but weren't impressed by the fact that the website said their facilities were fully open from mid April but nothing was.... typically French.  The owner said there weren't enough
people around to make it worthwhile opening them.   We settled on a very nice Municipal site at St Bree Les Bains adjacent to St Denis.  Lovely
large flat pitches, warm and modern toilets and showers and an access directly onto the beach on one side through a gate and to the village centre on the other.   We didn't stay any longer because the weather forecast gave the next 5 days with constant thunderstorms.
On the way back we called in at the wonderful small
    Municipal site at Martel
.  €9.55 a night for a unit with two people and electricity.  150 metres from the medieval town centre and with a wonderful restaurant at the Auberge at the site entrance.  What more could one wish for.

Before we left home for the Ile d'Oleron I did have a look at reviews for Camping les Gros Joncs and emailed them to ask whether they have acted on the poor reviews.   This is the reply I received.   It seems that the facilities have been updated and
if we had been on the island longer I think we may have tried it:

    Hello,

Thank you very much for your email.

I know that there are some reviews on the internet sayaing that the campsite is run down and not well kept.

I can assure you that we do our very best to keep the campsite clean and welcoming for all our guests. However, I must say that our sanitary facilities are a bit old but have recently been redecorated with new doors and tiles. They are cleaned every
day and may only sometimes dirty because some campers don't care about what they leave behind them.

I hope I have reassured you ! Please don't hesitate to contact me for further information.

    Best regards,

    Martine - Reception Manager

Ah yes ...the weather !! ....it's been dreadful here all week, what a pity it was poor when you were there. Thanks for the feedback, will have a look at the Municipal site, sounds really nice. Have also found one that might suit, it's the Indigo on the west
coast. Fairly simple concept, nothing fancy no pool but just 50 Mtrs from a nice beach (when the tide is in...) and sandy pitches in the trees. Little doggies allowed on the beach until end of June - so might give it a try too.

After we visit Il D'Oleron we head over to Dordogne.....all the rain a bit worrying as we booked a riverside pitch on Soleil Plage. Already this year we have had a holiday ruined because the Clubs site in York had to close on the week we had booked.....so
    fingers crossed !

There was a decent looking Municipal site at St Denis. We would have booked in, but reception was closed for lunch. So we went to the nearby Aire - itself a former Municipal site. There were hook ups and a shower block [although the latter had seen better days so I used the van's facilities] and pitches were spacious.  Great area for cycling and walking. There is a beach nearby with an amazing collection of painted beach huts.

One ACSI site I would have suggested you  avoid is Airhotel Oléron. It was truly dire and we stayed 1 night only. However, I see from their website that the sanitary facilities were renovated last year [that is since our visit]. They needed it! It is in a good location, so might be worth a look.

The only other site we have used is Les Gros Joncs [also ACSI]. It had  a very smart and impressive reception / pool / bar area but the sanitaires were very poor given the rating. We also moved  3 times, finding that dogs had fouled the pitches. Given the standards of the reception complex this was all a bit disappointing. But we stayed there 6 years ago, so things may well have improved. Might be worth checking it out.

Not much help I know! I cannot recommend anything without expressing some reservations. If we go back, I'd head for the Aire at St Denis or the nearby Municipal site.

We stayed at Les Gros Joncs about 4 yrs ago, thought it was fine. the showers are 'quaint' in that the doors are not full height which lets the morning sun into the cubicle, other than that, they worked well and were kept clean.

unless you are worried about someone being able to see your ankles or that they are unisex, no different from many other showers in France...
