Harwich to Hook then where?
Hi All. Just deciding where to head to in June. Was wondering if to try Harwich to Hook Holland for a change and head east. Any thoughts? Got 16 days to play with. Love mountains and lakes. Be interested to hear of your experiences.

One small piece of advice. If you're looking for mountains you may have to leave Holland
Anyway, why not head across and south east towards the Black Forest and then drop into Switzerland.
If you're looking for lakes I can recommend the Mecklenburg area in the North of Germany. It's not called the region of a 1000 lakes for nothing. We stayed at Plau am See. Very popular with Germans. You can get there in 2 days or even 1 if you have a co driver and push it.

Used the Harwich/Hook ferry two years ago to go to the Black Forest, Excellent holiday area and a good free motorway system gets you there in good time.
From where you live Harwich makes good sense and if you can travel mid week caravan goes free making it equally as cheap as the short Dover route.
Only downside for me was the ferry was very boring.

We use Harwich to HOH all the time. Normally we go overnight then head straight for Germany. Harz mountains are a great destination and about 7 hour drive. If heading South then the Mosel is an easy 5 hours. If we get a daytime ferry we just drive the
30 minutes to Delft stay a couple of days then head off.0 -
Thank you kindly for your replies so far. Northern Germany sounds good. Is it any good going via Luxembourg? Never been before. Are the any sites for a stopover near to the Hook? Think the ferry get there late in the afternoon.

Thank you for that one putt. Just looked on line and that would be ideal for 1st night. Just booked ferry too through club. £148 . Seems good value to me. Upgraded to Stenna Plus. Be interesting to know if its worth it. Seems good value. Complimentary Breakfast
plus snacks , teas and coffee etc etc. Just got to work out a really scenic route now.0 -
We paid for the club lounge 2 years ago and found it a waste of money at the time of our sailing, afternoon mid week. The lounge was full and a little to noisy because of it. The main deck was nearly empty and almost silent. I think after that experience
I would rather pay a bit more and have a cabin0 -
Haven't got my ACSI book with me as we're away in the van but if Delft is offering the discount when you go in June then it would be worth getting the card. We're using Delftse Hout site this April for 1 night and its costing €34 as the Dutch have national holiday around that time for the Kings birthday (very inconsiderate of him). Plus you may find other sites in Holland and Germany where you can use it.

Have not thought of Slovenia David. That's a thought. Somewhere a bit different too. Will be checking that out tonight.

Overnight To Hook followed by a stop near Heildleburg onto Camping Nattersee at Innsbruck various choices in Austria Zell am Zee nice campsites around lake. From here visits to the Glostknocker etc etc. If you have`nt seen Austria the extra distance to Slovenia
is`nt really worth it, thats not to say a future visit is`nt but if you go that far you might as well include a trip into northern Croatia.0 -
It's funny isn't it. There's a thread in General Chat about how old you think you are. The first year we started caravanning we had 16 days like the OP for a holiday. From North Wales we travelled to the Austria/Hungary border ( before either were in the
EC) and back again without a seconds thought of the distance or what could go wrong. Now, looking at the suggestion of going to Slovenia or Croatia in that timescale and adding an extra 500 miles to the OPs distance fills me with dread. It must be an age thing.0 -
Thanks Tigi. Look as if we will have to extend to a month!!!!!!!

We used Harwich last year for a number of reasons including price. We had three nights in Holland four in Austria and then 18 on Lake Garda. As said with ACSI card there are good savings and all the sites we used took it. The return leg, we used the Fern
and Reisa Passes, used one night stays in Gernmany and Holland befor the afternoon crossing back.Holland is a lovely country and worth a few days but Austria was wonderful and our planned overnight extended to four days in the Prutz valley. Using this route is toll free, very scenic and quite an easy drive.
The highlight was however Lake Garda and in June it is busy but not manic and from the South shore you can be in Verona in 20 minutes and Venice is about 90 minutes away if that appeals or you could spend the whole time exploring locally......and eating
and drinking!0 -

We are using this route in May. We have paid ours using tesco vouchers. As we haven't paid for the ferry we have booked a day cabin both ways. So total cost is £90

We shop at Morrison's and the corner shop !!!!
Was not aware you can use Tesco vouchers with Stenna. How does that work? Can you still book through the club ?

Write your comments here... No. You can't book through the club if using Tesco vouchers. You need to weigh up what is the best deal for you. Tesco vouchers are only valid on the Ireland and Holland routes. I used the max amount of £210.

You could always get the Tesco credit card and pay for your shopping with it. Take a bit longer to rack-up the points. But every little helps!
