Europe Breakdown Cover

Hi there all, this has probably come up before but as a newcomer to CT may I ask for advice on the most economic breakdown cover for a three week trip to Austria? Cost isn't everything, of course, as it is only when you have to seek assistance that the real
value comes to light. Many years ago I had to get help under the, then, AA Five Stat breakdown cover which proved itself to be worth every penny.

I don't think anyone can advise you what is best to suit you. It really is a matter for you to decide but you' re right there have been several discussions on the subject, the latest two are

We have been covered for Breskdown in Europe and UK for the past 7 years by ADAC of Germany.  We have used them 3 times once in France, Germany and Austria.  Excellent Service and Excellent Price.  See
    here

Dianne is an experienced European traveller and great supporter of ADAC and it seems to fit our requirements.  I will be changing to them soon.  Much cheaper than anything else.

Without doubt, Red Pennant has no equals, take it from me as we have had to use RP twice in the past few years

Hi Pand P, As said above there are other threads which contain a lot of info. I have been looking at the options, and posted in the other threads, for cover for a car and caravan for the UK and Europe. It has become clear to me that in the past I have made
assumptions in regard to the cover I am getting. Having looked at the info others posted I have been looking at the cover and had numerous quotes but, so far as I can see, none match RP. That does not mean that I will go with them as there are other factors, cost
being one,but having read a number of policy documents from other providers, and all info I can get on ADAC,the question that I have arrived at is what will happen if, while on holiday,my car has a breakdown when it is not attached to the car? I have looked
at other aspects, onward travel, double recovery etc, but so far can only find one provider that says this is covered and that was in a phone call to them to clarify.

I consider myself reasonably pratical and have had issues when I did not take recourse to my cover but sorted them myself but now realise that there were times when I coud have been in a position where my van would have to stay in Europe as its recovery
was not covered. I know  its unlikely but the potential cost would be immense.

As we all know, you pays yer money etc etc.

We used to use Red Pennant, but when we put our caravan into storage in France we were no longer able to use it as it's a home to home policy, and home for both you and the caravan/motorhome has to be in this country.  There is no doubt that it is the 'Gold Standard' - and provides all round cover.

In the floods in the Var area of France in 2010 there were many compliments to the person from the Caravan Club/Red Pennant who visited to help policy holders - not only for his assistance to those who had a policy, but to other stranded caravanners on the site and there was even a mention in a French caravanning magazine about the quality of the service offered.

As a newcomer I would go with Red Pennant, and with the benefit of more experience you'll probably carry on using them!

PS In regard to the flooding in the Var region, which I mentioned there are also compliments to the Caravan Club Caravan Insurance section about how a claim was sorted out, where someone else with another company was just told 'it was an Act of God' and refused to help.

ADAC for us. The cover is based on the number oif people, not the number of vehicles. So for us it covers two cars, a caravan and a motorbike in the UK or abroad for 109 Euros a year. It includes medical repatriation and replacement drivers/riders to get
you and your vehicle home if there has been either a sudden illness or an breakdown/crash. As we get older those benefits count for more.

CT is once again proving it's worth and I am very grateful for the wealth of information provided by contributors to this thread and also to those in previous discussions in and around the same subject. What is plain is that there are differences of opinion
but isn't that true whatever - and wherever - the subject under discussion? At the bottom line I ask myself do I really need this product. If the answer to that is yes, then the next question is how much of a 'feel good' factor do I want to buy, and, lastly,
how much is it appropriate to pay. For the record, I will probably go with ADAC. Thanks once again.

ADAC for me also. When my wife broke her leg, in France in 2014, they were excellent. They are ALMOST equal to RP, but much cheaper. I store my tourer in France, so RP is not for me!

Taking out ADAC next month as my 'free' cover with my car expires.  Have medical cover with my Bank account (cheapest now both over 70).  That does for us.
