Eurotunnel
Hi everyone, planning a trip to Italy in July via the tunnel, know what date I want to go out but haven't made my mind up when we want to return so was wondering if it is possible to get an open ended return ticket, thanks for the help

Eurotunnel says No. But it is very easy to change the date of return while you are abroad. If it is a different time and therefore a different price you will have to pay the Extra. It is cheaper by the way to book through the Caravan Club.

Every year we check the prices of Tunnel & Ferry and we have never booked any of them - we found the Tunnel to be the most expensive foe a mere half hour quicker so we go P&O and just call in the night before departure and you will be surprised at how rates change depending on how busy they are - we have saile for £65 with a car and caravan one way and at the most £90 coming back ! Never book

I am sure you can get an open return but suspect you will be paying top money for that convenience. Dianne' suggestion is likely to be the best option and you can change it with 24 hours notice. We did this last year and it cost £20 to change but that was
in October, might be more than that in peak season.David

I have been crossing the Channel by Tunnel since it first opened and the last 12 with a large caravan. Would not cross any other way after disastarous Ferry Crossings. Delays for weather, strikes and very rough journeys. only been delayed twice on the Tunnel, and then for less than an hour. Well worth the extra money especially if you have animals.

We live near Hulls ferry but travel to Folkestone because its less stress for our dog, there is a Flexifare but way way dearer. Much better to follow Diannes advice whereby if you can't keep to your return day, then ring up wherever you are and change it
for a minimal fee.0 -
I agree with Dianne above when it comes to FOlkestone/Dover to Calais crossings. The tunnel is definitely worth a bit of extra money. I always book though even for the tunnel. The instruction to "never book" is not one I will ever follow.
The tunnel is surely a lot more than half an hour quicker as well. For 95% of destinations in France or England, the ferry means half an hour extra driving (both ends added) before you even start taking account of the difference in crossing time and boarding
time - always more for the ferry in my experience.0 -

We never know when we are coming back, so always just book single crossing. Webthen book the return crossing whilst en route back to Calais. As far as I know, there is no saving by booking return, although someone may correct me on that.

We never know when we are coming back, so always just book single crossing. Webthen book the return crossing whilst en route back to Calais. As far as I know, there is no saving by booking return, although someone may correct me on that.

You don't say whether you travel via the tunnel or not, but, in the tunnel's case, you are right in that a return is simply 2 single fares added together, and there is no saving in booking them at the same time. However, fares do go up the closer to departure you book, in the same way that airfares do. We always book a return, but last time we were thinking of going back a day early and I was quoted (the day before our booked return, ie the day we wanted to return instead) an eye-watering £200+!! We didn't bother, and instead just turned up during that afternoon (we had a cracked windscreen and wanted to get home to get it repaired as it couldn't be done in France according to Autoglass); explained the situation and we got on without having to pay any extra! Don't know whether it was because of the windscreen or not, but the fact remains that it didn't cost any extra.

Hello allFirst I would never advise on anything all I said was I/We never book - and it has paid off for us every time. Our policy is this - If you book and something goes belly up then there is no argument or mess to sort out - with any thing - even booking
campsites or other things. We take our chances - more fun. Last summer we were caught up in the Ferry strike and immigrant problems as usual, so wee stayed a few more days and took time around the local area - lovely. When they got moving again we called
up booked the lowest cost time but that was on a late evening crossing but went straight in anyway and P&O allowed us to board even though the cost for that time was higher at no extra charge - what a fantastc company - might have been our grey hair that

I spoke to Eurotunnel yesterday and they said that a single crossing for a Motorhome can be in the order of £220 if you just turn up whereas the current return fare booked about 4 months in advance is £188 so it is far better to choose a date, book the return
and change if necessary. Caravan Club is 10% cheaper but they charge an admin. fee to change and they only work office hours. Not sure if there is a fee for changing if you book direct with Eurotunnel.0 -
No charge for changing if you book direct with Eurotunnel but you do have the pay the current fare and their prices tend to increase the fuller the Shuttles and nearer to departure. Last October I changed my crossing a few days before returning to the UK
and I was charged £20 which was the difference between the fare when I originally booked and the fare when I actually crossed.David

If you want to be able to change your return tunnel date/time DO NOT book with the Club as they charge more than the 10% saving to change, you might have to wait on the phone for 35 mins to get through and they are closed from Fri evening to Mon morning.

HG, we always book direct with Eurotunnel using Tresco vouchers. I have changed the booking a number of times in the past, and they don't charge a fee at all; all they will charge is the
difference between what you have already paid and any increase. When I've changed in the past the price has been the same and therefore I wasn't charged a penny.0 -
In the case of the crossing I was checking, the Club offered 10% reduction but the £20 admin. charge is slightly more than 10% so I guess it depends how certain we are with the dates. Thanks for the input.

When we changed our date with the Caravan Club we paid £20 thats all certainly a lot less than the 10%. All I did was ring from Austria and through on the phone and done in no time at all. Excellent quick service.
