Serbia & Croatia

We are in the process of planning our trip back from visiting our son in Bulgaria. We plan to head to Belgrade and then Zagreb before aiming for the coast of Croatia. Any advice on any other places to visit and camp sites would be extremely helpful. Thanks.

Coming from Serbia via Zagreb, about 40 miles towards the coast, near Karlovac, is Camping Slapic, a beatifully placed site with excellent facilities.  If the weather is hot the river is a superb
    natural swimming pool.

From there it depends on how long you want to spend in Croatia.  The country has many beautiful inland places as well as coastal resorts.  Heading South on the E71 you get to the Plitvice lakes
We've not been there yet but hope to be there this May.

On the coast further south we would recommend Camping Peros, near Nin, north of Zadar.  A small clean and friendly site within easy reach of the old city of Zadar. If you prefer a larger site Camping
Zaton nearby has over 1,000 pitches,  which is very good off season, but a young music lover's centre in season! (Each to his own).  South along the coast is Sibenik, which has a good site we will be trying in May, and Split, where camping
Stobrec is very good. Split is certainly worth a visit, with the city within the walls of Emperor Diocletian's palace, a busy harbour and an old Roman city a few miles away at Salona.

Further south the coast is wonderful, but to get to Dubrovnik entails either an awkward ferry (I am told) or a hassle with your insurance company for the 15 minute drive through Bosnia at Neum.

If you have less time head west from Karlovac to the Istrian coast.  Very popular and often crowded, there are a number of good sites along the coast here, mainly very large ones.  Pula, Rovinj and Porec are cities well worth visiting.  We stayed at
    Amarin
near Rovinj and were happy there for a week or so and it was a good base to explore Istria.

The best of Croatia, many say, are the islands.  We have only stopped on one, Krk,
at Pila, across the bay from Krk town.  Another excellent site.

There are several Croatian "specialists" on this forum.  Hopefully one will pick this up and add to it.  Meantime have a look at

    our blog
for our time there in autumn 2012.

We returned from Croatia in October after our 10th visit ( ninth by motorhome) and we're going back in May for a small-boat cruise, so you can tell we like it.

    Our favourite spots now are
    Krk
    ,
    Cres
, and Nerezine. You can get camping info from
    here.

When do you expect to be on the Croatian coast ?  I ask because I think it might impact on recommendations.

My only experience of Serbia was a campsite in Belgrade in 1965 in a tent, which won't be of any use to you!  However a useful website for the practicalities of out of the way countries is

    MagBaz travels
.  I have linked to the Serbia pages.

Trip is in the planning for May / June 2016 so hoping for as much help as possible especially for Serbia, otherwise it will be driving straight through and into Croatia.

I think those that have more info on Serbia or Croatia must be away as I've had very few posts with any advice. Can anyone give any more help, especially Serbia otherwise it will end up us driving straight through.
