Does it matter which site and which year?

This is why I don't use club sites when grass pitches are in use.

Yes of course it does - we have had over 60 nights on grass this year and had no problems at all but this year has been dry (I would say) had it rained alot then of course grass can get slippy.

My point is that all grass pitches have the potential to end up like this at any time of the year

Potential maybe but on a well managed site it doesn't have to happen and some sites are very well drained so short of a monsoon there shouldn't be a problem - Dunnet Head CC for example appeared to be very well drained when we were there, others of course are not so well drained.  The thing is not everyone wants to pitch on a car park and that is just what some sites look like on the other hand if the site is in a wet area on boggy clay then clearly more use of HS is needed.  It's nice to have a mix.

I would also stick my neck out and say the the majority of caravanners (not motorhomes) would prefer to be on grass during the summer rather than HS.

From my experience over a few years of peak season use on club sites I would disagree. On a CL maybe but on club sites the grass is the last to go and many move off grass as soon as a HS becomes free

What people say and what they do is different.

We will have to agree to disagree on that one. Here is Daleacres CC at the end of July - the grass looks quite popular to me unlike the HS.

"Dunnet Head CC for example appeared to be very well drained when we were there,"

Dunnet Bay, like Godrevy Park and the Haven Perran Sands site, is on sand. They are all virtually on the dunes so drain very fast and aren't typical of grass sites.

With only 35% HS Daleacres is going to attract people who like grass. It's not one I'd use any time of year

Here's our pitch at Bladon Chains CC site.

The assistant warden placed our caravan on the pitch with his little tractor:

My experience has certainly been that on most sites grass is the last to go even in good weather.

Good point about Daleacres. I wondered why so many on grass. Not usual IMO on most CC sites. There are 41 none serviced hard standings I reckon and 81 grass. With those odds it is one site I would normally avoid.

I had second thoughts about going to Seacroft. 1n early July. 25 non serviced HS and 53 grass. We got the last HS when we arrived about 12.15 on Thursday 7th July. If I had weighed up the site properly when I booked I would have paid the extra to gain serviced
hard standing. The standpipe would probably have been used once to fill aquaroll on arrival

It's a Temporary Holiday Site run, usually, by local associations of C&CC, John.

It can work either way, Compass. After leaving Haven in disgust we moved on to Wareham with 3 sites in mind. (4 if you include the unloved, by us, Hunters Moon.) We called in at Birchwood Tourist Park and stayed two nights on a fully serviced part paved HS pitch for a couple of ££ less than a standard pitch at Hunters Moon. The site is near HM but the other side of the road and the pitching area is well away from the road. No traffic noise and no scrap yard. We'll use Birchwood again rather than HM.

Where's that BB?  The background looks a bit like Leither Meadow @ St Davids but the slope suggests otherwise.

You are correct TF - good spot. May this year - absolute cracker of a site so long as you stay away from the Jackdaws !  (or were they Crows or Rooks can't remember)

Ha, ha! I think we'd probably all expect mud on a grass pitch in West Wales but not on a supposedly HS pitch at Haven.

You need to try Haven for muddy HS.
