Cycles on site

Not there as a safety related issue as at the most the vehicle speed is 5 mph, a brisk walking pace so giving plenty of time to make visual contact and achieve the stopping distance. Just not viable for traffic management.
How many cars can you honestly say drive around sites at 5mph. I only saw 1 on a recent stay at a CC site and that was mine much to the annoyance of the vehicles following us...+1

Surely our sites one-way system is only there to facilitate on site traffic flow?

I have not the slightest hang up cycling what is being suggested as the wrong way round just in the same conceptual way as I would walk the wrong way round without giving it another thought. There will be enough room to pass or facilitate
by moving aside for a vehicle moving towards me without issues. But then I am a person still both able to see and be aware of what I am doing, when those are gone I doubt I will be driving to tow there anyway.Trouble is children see an adult doing it and think it is OK and permitted. However, because they are kids they tend to do it a lot faster. It is the same principle as on a pedestrian crossing if young children are present, it is always best to wait for
the green man, even if there is no car in sight.0 -
Could I ask - why do parents (well, certainly a few that post on here) seem to have such a big problem with taking their kids somewhere suitable to play and to learn how to ride their bikes?
Why do they see it as necessary for their kids to ride round and round on site roads (which are not play areas) and often at speed and in the wrong direction?
Is it all too much trouble for you to take them somewhere more suitable?
Do you ever, for a moment, consider the impact on others? Or is just you that matters?
I've not yet seen an answer to this.
Would one of those parents who are happy to send their kids off around the site to play, care to offer a reply?

We don't stay on many main CC sites but those we have we've never had a problem with children playing or riding their bikes, I just wish that parents of toddlers (up to 5 years old) wouldn't leave them unsupervised! Commercial sites are an entirely different
matter, they really do have problems0 -

Even with the car doing the speed limit. If a child is going the wrong way at 10 mph, probably a conservative figure, the
closing speed is 22 feet per second. Throw in the odd hedge obstructing sight lines, and you can perhaps see why cycles are ask to follow the one way system.0 -

Exactly the same as a kid cycling the right way round at 10 mph meeting a walker or disabled cart going the wrong way round at 5 mph; or a car at the typical speeds we see, meeting the walker or cart. What needs instilling is acting responsibly and most important being aware, and it is not only for the kids to learn.
As said I don't see any greater problem or difference in risk between cycling, walking or the use of a cart within the site in the opposite direction to the vehicular traffic flow.

I am afraid I fail to see your logic. You are going against the laid down site rules, which say that bikes should follow the one way system, and that is acting responsibly. I do agree it is not only for kids to learn though.

"How many cars can you honestly say drive around sites at 5mph. I only saw 1 on a recent stay at a CC site and that was mine much to the annoyance of the vehicles following us."
That's very true. I said earlier in the thread that in our, admittedly limited, stays on CC sites cars travelling well in excess of 5 mph is by far a more common sight than children cycling around like lunatics (although we don't use CC sites in school
holidays) but according to others it's not a problem!0 -
You are going against the laid down site rules,
Steve L and others
I'm just trying to get a feel of the CC members mentality -
Do you believe that adhering to the Site Rules is the be all and end all even when they may be illogical because the Club says you have to?

Well, I do think it's fair enough to say that if you choose to use CC sites you should know exactly what to expect as far as (current) rules are concerned. And, yes, they should apply to all site users.
If you can't or don't want to stick to those rules then don't use CC sites, but be careful what you wish for, because as far as I can see many other sites have just as many rules - and having walked through Haven Perran Sands the other day - I'd say they're
flouted far more commonly than on CC sites!0 -

You could be right but not in those currently being published on line.
These however whilst not having such a rule, do have as thier leading statement "Please drive your vehicle with particular consideration for pedestrians, including children and other vulnerable road users, who have priority over vehicles on our sites' roads."
Yes, I do think I act responsibly, and within the rules it seems.
Pasting directly from the clubs rule's:
13 Site roads
a. Please drive your vehicle with particular consideration for pedestrians, including children and other vulnerable road users, who have priority over vehicles on our sites' roads. You must have a full current driving licence, insurance for the vehicle driven and follow the principles of road safety. Cars and motorhomes must have a valid road fund licence. Vehicle speeds should not exceed walking pace (5mph) and one way systems should be followed at all times. Please remember that other members' pitches are strictly "no-go" areas.b. Bicycles, skateboards, scooters and roller skates are allowed on sites although, of course, consideration should be shown to other visitors. No cycling or skating is permitted on site between the hours of dusk and dawn, as determined by the Site Staff. Please observe any no cycling signs on site, such as around toilet blocks, and ensure that children are supervised at all times. Remember that the principles of road safety should be observed and special care should be taken when cycling onto and off roadways. Please ask the Site Staff about designated cycle routes nearby.

By any standard definition a bycycle is a vehicle.
"any means in or by which someone travels or something is carried or conveyed; a means of conveyance or transport:"
However, even if this is disputed, 13b states that the principles of road safety should be observed. Would you cycle the wrong way up a one way street, or get off and walk" I thought we had established that camp site roads are not play areas.

Ocsid, good salient point you have in bold, the onus is on Adults, some Children are still learning to ride a bike, it's lunacy to expect them to understand the minutiae of the Highway Code.

Oh dear we will now have to include those Aquarolls, Wastemasters, shopping trail alongs, disabled carts, pushchairs and me pushing a wheel chair. I doubt many other than yourself will be going round the whole circlular route to comply to the letter rather than going back and forth
0 -
Perhaps one-way systems add to the hazard. If there were two way traffic, would people be more circumspect?

Agreed ..... same reasoning that in some places ALL road sign have been removed to create a free for all, which makes us all think a bit more

Not seen many of those doing 10 mph+
However, in respect of bikes, I think it is incumbent us adults to set a good example. Can't remember if it was on this thread or the other, but there was a video posted showing a young girl comming round a blind corner and riding straight into a car. Just consider the poor parents who are having to explain to there offspring, as you cycle past. "Why can't I go that way round, that person is"

On most sites the roads are not wide enough for two way traffic though.
In that case it needs traffic lights

This is legal in many towns in France, Germany and Holland
