Cycles on site

Just had a lovely stay at Merrose Farm, nice clean site and wardens very helpfull, as our oufit is so long, 9.0m camper with trailer I phone ahead to let the wardens be aware.

The site is on a hill but pitches are level, as you turn into the site it is a large open area with a hill to your left, new arrivals turn in and pause and then read the sign to say carry on into the late bookings space and book in.

The number of small children on cycles racing down the hill had to be seen to be belived.

Please parents play your part, the wardens do their best but they are not resposible for your children, could you just imagine pulling into a site and bang you have a bump with a small child

But as the driver, as long as you keep to 5mph & are able to stop, the worse that will happen is that they bang into your stationary vehicle, they're on holiday too.

    so...43'....a tad over 13m..

    possibly a 5+ m towcar and almost 8m van?

43' sounds an awfully big number for what is really a fairly common "large estate and t/a van" type outfit....

the 9m MH with additional trailer is probably just as large......but size isnt important....they all hurt if they run you over.

Does the 5 mph (walking pace) speed limit also apply to kids on bikes?

I very much doubt it as speed limits do not apply to bikes on the public highway.

Neither do traffic lights from what I've seen very often! Sad

An excerpt from a sites leaflet -

    Vehicles and cycles

Parents are reminded that children remain their responsibility and therefore they should be supervised at all times, and to ensure that all members of their party follow the principles of road safety.

Motor vehicles and bicycles on site should, at all times, be used with due regard to the safety and convenience of others and
their speed should not exceed walking pace (5mph). No cycling is permitted on site between the hours of dusk and dawn, as determined by the Wardens.
Any one- way system signs should be observed by all vehicles and cycles. Foot pedalled cycles, scooters and skateboards can be used, but are not allowed on the paved area around toilet
blocks and communal areas and must not be ridden on footpaths. Please note that motorised mobility scooters are allowed on site, but children’s motorised scooters or skateboards are not.

I noticed a couple of kiddies motorised ( electric?) scooters at Cae Mawr last month. Not going particularly fast, I hasten to add.

Well spotted TW, perhaps the wardens should enforce this rulee as much as vehicle speeding on site.

This is something for parents to consider.

I think that 2 children have been killed on CC sites though I can't be sure they were bike related.

One was at Rowntree Park I can't remember which site the other incident on.

I do drive very slowly an any Caravan site, I think I would stop driving if I killed a child irrespective of fault.

I have witnessed parents and children racing round the lower part of Ferry Meadows site anti clockwise and at high speed.

Yes, children are on holiday but so is everyone else.

Site roads are for accessing pitches......they are not for riding round and round. In cars or on bikes.

Parents who allow their kids to do so are both irresponsible and lazy.

Just because people are on holiday doesn't mean they have to act in an irresponsible manner ,we all have to be responsible wether away or at home .....

And they will assert until they ar blue in the face that their kids are well behaved and that they are good parents.

Apparantly there are no poor parents.......

Write your comments here...so how many children were there racing down the hill , just for perspective and what is the perceived speed..... Did anything actually happen?, I think some members are in danger, of wanting a sterile fluffy wrapped in cotton wool site, no kids, no bikes, no smokey bbqs , no washing lines.  No dogs , no wastemasters on the gravel before 8am, no music, no flag poles, no single sex groups. Etc etc etc

We are not talking about a public highway but private land with public access; very different.  Also, speed limits do apply to bikes on the public highway.

Speed limits on the public highway only apply to motorised vehicles.

Can you honestly say that if you were at the start of a one way system and to leave the site you had the option of cycling all the way round the site or cycling a few feet the wrong way, that you would go the long way round?

Let me get this right MM, you stop your car and a child or adult crashes into your car or caravan causing damage to either and you just shrug your shoulders and say "never mind we are all on holiday and it doesn't matter!"

Bicycles can cause serious damage to metalwork and cost money to repair. I don't understand your logic!
