Speeding on site
can I ask why the vast majority of caravaners do not understand what 5mph is and why the club asks us to travel at that speed on site?
I frequently see speeds of 20 and 25mph and at that speed a child can be seriously injured.

'Vast majority' - I think not, llivaf.
When you see these occurrences on site do you inform the warden?

Of course our Director General supports 10mph with penalties for going slow!
Seriously though, how can we expect 5mph when most speedometers start at 10mph. I prefer to look at what is happening around me than keep staring at the dashboard as I think that is the safer option.

Vast majority, speeds of 20-25mph sorry, but never have I seen speeding to that extent, maybe I have been lucky. Most I have
seen have been considerate and doodling along aware of what's going on around them, maybe 5, 6, 7 or 8mph, I don't know but certainly at a leisurely pace.0 -
I certainly wouldn't say it was the majority but I do have to agree that a fair number of drivers on site are exceeding the recommended 5 mph. I'd suggest they ask their passenger to get out and walk and try following them at the same speed.

Perhaps the wardens could arrange to escort each arrival to their pitch by preceeding them on their tractor?
Hmm. On second thoughts maybe that will not work either.

There are some really good theories in this thread as to how to maintain 5 MPH.
I don't do any of them I watch the speedo and when it says 6 MPH I slow down.
Don't they have them on all these fancy new cars and trucks that most members drive?

You are all aware that "walking pace" is between 2.5 and 3mph, aren't you. Unless you are one of those swaggering stiff-legged speed walkers, you are unlikely to reach 5mph, which IMHO is still quite slow. I think 8mph is possibly more realistic and, perhaps,
more likely to be universally observed. (Protective headgear donned)0 -
How about, in order to avoid people breaking the site speed limit, they increase it to 10mph?
Seriously, I have seen some people driving briskly, but maybe 1 in 20 years at 20 to 25 mph.
Which site did you see all these rally driving caravanners on? I'd quite to go, just for the spectacle......

If you really cannot -as opposed to cant be bothered to- control the speed of your car and drive at a set speed you probably shouldnt be driving. Whether 5 mph is appropriate is a whole different question. Under 10 but enforced would probably be safer.

As members you have every right to approach a speeding member and take issue with it.

I don't think members have any right to challenge other people who they think are speeding You could report to wardens but I would be that they would not challenge them on your say so - you could video them i suppose and show that to the warden. Some wardens
don't challenge them any way but most do if they see them.0 -
I notice you didn't answer my question about bringing speeders to the attention of the warden, llivaf. Wardens cannot see everything that goes on and we should help them by bringing dangerous activity to their attention for the good of all. That is a constructive
thing to do to enable the activity to be nipped in the bud.0 -
We're all members and we have every right to approach a speeding member and take issue with it.

You as a member have every right to have you say, by all means report the member to the warden. ...I have known members approach other members about various incidents and then report it to the warden.

By the same token children should be governed from speeding around site son their bicycles as many exceed the 5mph. In addiotn on more than one occasion we have had a child on bicycle almost colide with us while we are walking along a path. We have already had a child run into the side of the car while on a skateboard. Of course, parents nowhere to be seen!
There is always the option not to be bothered with club sites, petty rules etc and find another site where there are no curtain twitchers who have nothing better to do than to see if they can catch out someone so they can have a moan on CT!
BTW this therad will probably be moved to one of the other 40,000 threads regarding speeding on site!

Write your comments here...can I just say that you shouldn't assume that people just want to have a moan about speeding and if there are 40,000 threads on the subject then we do have a problem.
I do agree with your comment re children riding their bikes however.

Where do you want kids to cycle? The open road? They might cycle a bit too fast, but they're kids and they don't think things through. Open roads are far too dangerous for kids to play on today so they play in the relative safety of a caravan site where
we, the grown up, should be looking where we're driving and making allowances for them.0 -
I still like the Dutch model of all cars in the car park and everyone can cycle safely on the campsite - but that would cause outrage here in the UK. I only know one UK site that operates like that, but people huff and puff when they find it in force and say they will never go there again. A no- win situation.
