York-Rowntree Park and electricity consumption

HappyHi.

I note that there are a number of pitches at York which have cones placed on them. There is a notice in Reception indicating that a number of pitches are out of use due to excessive power consumption.

Does anyone know  the actual reason? Is it lack of infrastructure or are the bills too high? The latter seems odd so I'm hoping it  is the former. I could always ask of course!

Write your comments here...Hi. Old  part of site and yes it may be that the power to the site has been limited as a consequence of flooding within the site or elsewhere.

There is nothing up on the website page, although it does mention that there will be no hot water on 22nd March as repair work is carried out. Probably residual flood damage. Club did well to get it open again fairly quickly!

Do you think that as there is no electric to some pitches, they could accomadate some of the "do not want electric" brigade until fixed at a pound less a night?Wink

Have  you  asked  the  Wardens  at  all  ?  They  are  regular  mines  of  information  about  the  things  they  have  done  on  site .

Was there on Friday. They reserve the pitches for vans and motorhome that are too large for some of the smaller pitches , I think we got the smallest pitch,no 4, it wasn't big enough for our new unicorn Vigo TBH , there was a large pitch opposite that remained
empty till we left at 8am the next day

We have quite a long motorhome and would not expect or would want a pitch reserving for us as its a first come first served basis and thats how it should be for all members apart from members who are disabled.I just dont understand why so many pitches were reserved for units which did not need to be reserved.

sorry I'm confused (yes more than normal) are the pitches reserved for large outfits/disabled or excessive power use?

The wardens obviously know what units are booked in so clearly have magage the site by making sure the pitches match the unit size, otherwise a large motorhone could turn up and only have a small pitch that it could not fit on.

Right with you there Corners. Nothing about pitch sizes in the OP is there?

It will be interesting to see what the OP reports back about the signs relating to excessive power

Yes but the OP saw signs about excessive power and that is interesting as I've not heard about that before.

We were at Rowntree Park a week ago. The previous posts are a little confused as there were a number of separate issues.

    1. Arrival procedure has been changed to try to reduce queuing on the single track approach road. Membership cards are collected at the gate and you are told to find a pitch and return later to book in. Also told some pitches coned to allow for large outfits
and disabled and not to use them unless told.

    2. There were signs about excessive electricity usage in previous days causing problems and to be considerate.

    3. Problems with the boiler at the amenities block meant that availability of hot water had been reduced and engineers had to be called out. By the time we left this was resolved.

Hope this provides some clarification but one word of warning if your visiting. Watch out for the squirrels and pigeons who delight in sitting in the trees and doing what comes naturally all over the van and awning.

    Thanks, ForestR.

So the cones had nothing to do with power supplies......they were just reserving bigger pitches for the priveledged few.......

I doubt that disabled people class themselves as privileged Ian Undecided

OK. I now have a copy of the leaflet as kept at Reception.

The leaflet states" we ate currently experiencing power failure on certain areas of the site
due to excessive power usage. To help prevent further failure please could we sk for your support by keeping power usage to a minimum."

So, the reservation of various pitches  via the use of a cone appears unrelated however the leaflet raises more questions. E.g. What is excessive? What is a "minimum". Surely the site infrastructure was upgraded recently?

We were there at the end of February and had a problem with our fridge which kept switching itself from electric to gas and back again.  OH having been an electronics engineer in his non-retired life has all sorts of equipment with him and decided to measure power coming in.  That was down to about 200 volts on a number of occasions, so yes, power was definitely an issue.

We were very careful in using appliances as we didn't want to trip the EHU.

...The upgrade was before the floods ,could be that its still causing problems

We had the same problem at Crossways, voltage was down to 180v, fridge (Thetford) turned itself off, so we had to switch it to gas.

I think it turns itself off at below about 190v.

Even turning all our mains consumption off, including the battery charger, we could not get the voltage up enough.  Don't know what all the other campers were using all that power on.

We have never had that problem at Crossways, but as vans/and their owners get more power hungry in cooler times, and crossways is a very old site

This was in May, so not cold, but was a weekend so site fairly busy.   Reported it to the warden, twice, but had the feeling he did not believe us!

I measured the voltage with a proper test meter.

Possibly a problem just with the area were were in, but still needs looking at in case there is some unknown (to the warden) problem.
