currently visiting Ludlow, so chose to stay at Ludlow Touring Park affiliated site....a 'commercial' really.....
however, despite being a 'five star site', totally immaculate (far better the the average CC site) and having a wonderfully warm shower block with heated floors, perfect HS pitches, an AO area should you desire this, and a location
that allows an easy stroll into Ludlow, they have winter offers on to attract customers....3 nights for price of two.....so a six night break for the price of four....now thats a good deal....
we can only stay five nights, but (along with extra discount for being CC members) this still got the price down to £19 a night.
now, this is more than we would would normally spend, especially for the week after a school hol 'peak week' but the site is really that good.....
probably, at its full price, we might not have bothered, but flexibility on their pricing meant they got five days of our business.....and its somewhere we might come back to.....
Write your comments here...BB when you go into Ludlow check the Butchers shops out!. Excellent for fresh game i.e Venison,Wild Duck ,Pheasant, ect,ect. Ludlow is a foodies paradise (not saying you are a foody) with good resturants. As we only live 12 miles
away we frequent Ludlow a lot. Market days are Mon & Thurs. Enjoy your break.

Thank goodness that all the providers are different in so many respects and not just price. Variety means more choice and different possibilities. One difference for me is that the commercial sites more often than not stipulate a minimum no. of nights stay (sometimes 3 or more) on one site, thankfully the club does not at all.

Precisely my point. They are different. The differences in the ways providers operate will suit some but not others. Varied market is good! You choose which suits you best. That's good In my view!

went to Stokeshay Castle yesterday, via a roundabout (hilly) cycle route 44, and probably out to the west/south today...might take in both Berrington (Hall, NT) and Barrington.....easy to get these the wrong way round!

BB We had a few days at Stanmore Hall also Morris Leisure as a try out when we got our new vans and found it exactly as you describe the Ludlow site, it was however expensive (March 2012) at £27 and probably the most we have ever paid . In spite of that
and if combined with offers these sites take some beating.David, OH picked up a few leaflets in the camp shop including a few on their other sites....i have the stanmore hall and Oxen Hall ones in front of me....might try again if they can hold off season prices....
Like all their sites Oxon Hall is excellently kept. It has the added attraction of being within walking distance of pubs, takeaways, a supermarket and the park and ride into Shrewsbury. Good dog walk across the adjacent fields as well.

lovely orchard farm setting, great views, ehu but no showers/toilet and a some HS but so rustic next to the Morris Leisure offerings, however, in warmer weather, right up my cup of tea (AMOBUTS)....
will be back to use this one later in the year....its £15.

I suppose that in many ways I can ally myself to the comments made earlier by StevL and Broadside, re appreciating the quality of the club sites etc. BUT if we always except these big price rises without demour, there is a strong danger that two unintended results might come about. (1). The Club relies on a steady influx of new younger members, many of those are entering the hobby as a less expensive way of having a holiday. Now us older members may not like it, but we have to accept that they are the life blood of caravanning and the club itself. If we just carelessly allow costs to rise without any control we will all suffer not just them.
(2) If price rises are allowed to rise without adverse comment, those taking the decisions to do so will surmise that we are all happy to pay more, and so will not hesitate to make further big increases in the future! Do not allow that to happen!

It's a nice site, Micky, but would definitely make sure you go when the ground is dry. There are H/S pitches but to get to them you have to drive up hill over grass. Easy enough to walk into Ludlow from the site, or up into Mortimor Forest in the other direction.

Much as I would like to think they do, I don't think the adverse comments made on this forum will have a significant affect on the CC thinking. The only thing that will do that, is if the club start to loose market share. To date I have seen no evidence of this, so I can only assume that people have not been put off by the price rises. We will obviously have to wait until the end of the year, to see if this latest round of increases has been a step too far.

The trend is "we the customers" now look at alternatives mostly on the web.Like Insurance quotes we now look at other providers and pick the best for our needs. We do the same now after deciding on an Area, look at all availability- CC,Cl and commercial.
We then pick. The days of blind loyalty has gone and the CC need to be aware of this. In our case on 11/4 we will use Haven at Scarborough at £7 per night compared with West Ayton at £19. Just back from Lady Margaret- the site is tired, access diabolical so
no longer can you say the Club provides excellence.0 -
On the whole we use sites belonging to the two clubs, very large "commercial" sites don't have much appeal even if they are cheaper. That's a personal view and on the whole we can find quite a big price range within the two clubs. Some of the club sites don't appeal to us either but there are enough to choose from except in areas where there are "gaps" and we have to spread our choices. Last year in Scotland we only used three sites belonging to the clubs, plus another six privately or community owned.

It seems a lot of members are taking the tinted glass's off and smelling the coffee,on a personal note we prefer location as the first requirement, CC /C&CC/ or COM, are secondry it depends where they are.

While I agree JVB, there was a time there was no need to look further than a Club site, you knew it was the best value. This is now no longer the case and it is very much worth looking at what is available in the area you want to be before booking.
My perception this year is that peak bookings are down?????

On the first long weekend in March I have booked into a privately owned & run site In Highbridge Somerset. It has not only EHU's to each pitch, but also toilets and washing facilities available too. OK not as state of the Art as most CC sites now, but perfectly functional and clean. Rate £13.00 per night for 2 adults and Elec.. £15 per night from mid May.
I estimate a minimum of £6 per night saving on the CC site throughout the year. The CC site does not open until the end of March anyway. Much too late these days now that vans are so much better insulated.
I have said it before, I have supported the CC ever since the mid 1970's and want it to thrive, but somewhere along the way I think it has started to grow away from its grass roots.
I think that it might be taking a little bit too much notice of the well satisfied older member ( Like me) and not addressing the needs of the younger less well healed member who is likely to be put off by these Premium Prices that the CC is now charging. If that is so, then ultimately we might all suffer.
