The best Channel crossing largely depends on the point in the UK you are travelling from and the area you want to reach. I suspect you need to be a lot more specific about the areas you want to visit as France and Spain are big countries.

Be aware, sites get very busy over the winter in Spain and you will need to book your stay. If it is your first time across the Channel I suggest you book one of the Club's winter sites. There was a post about these about a week ago, I think bookings open soon.

The post is >here< , bookings open on the 1st July. Some of the regular posters on here have made winter trips to Spain and as TW says if you supply more iinformation I am sure help will be available. You need to go south of Vallencia in January for the warmer weather.

And your choice of route to Valencia is a ferry to northern Spain followed by a 350 mile drive, or a 1000 mile drive to get there from Calais, or rather less than that driving from Dieppe, Le Havre, Caen, Cherbourg or St Malo if one of those is more convenient for you. If I were ever tempted to go it would be via Portsmouth - St Malo and down the western side of France, but all my winter holidays were long haul startimg from Heathrow airport. Take care. I wish you well.

PS, if you would prefer a few city breaks as you cross France then driving to Spain via Paris, Lyon, Avignon, Montpellier and Perpignan with a day or two at each of them might appeal to you instead - even in mid winter.

As you have only 4 weeks, the long crossing to Northern Spain might be advisable. Not liking sea crossings, we always use the Tunnel and spend about 4 nights getting to our destination. You won’t want to linger long in France in January; it can be bitterly cold.

Given your time scale, and with days en route in mind, have a look at sites on the Costa del Azahar, just North of Valencia. There is a good selection in: Benicarló, Peñíscola, Alcossebre and Benicàssim. We have stayed in all those locations over the years, and the sites we have used are in the towns, or very close (walkable), thus ideal for motorhomers.

As another poster has advised, it would be sensible to book; it’s a popular area. But I would book directly with the sites. They are really very understanding if you need to cancel / rearrange a booking.

Hi @Senator5 That sounds like an exciting trip! As Peedee mentioned our bookings open on 01st July for our 2026 winter touring campsites throughout Europe.

In the meantime you might find it helpful to look at some of our overseas information which includes member discounts on ferry crossings in our OVERSEAS HOLIDAYS section of the Club website. Happy planning!
