Back to Marazion. As Steve L said there are no booking spaces for 2022 so I presume something has changed.

Estate will have to be careful what goes onto Site. We used to use CL couple of hundred metres away, we got there one time to find a huge old mine shaft had opened up, one of farm barns had disappeared😱 Thankfully no one, human or animal hurt. The woods all around are covered in shafts. Site has a public right of way through it as well. Close season, when it’s shut up, it’s a lovely enclosed area. Apart from hook up points, you wouldn’t guess what it was used for if you enter via old slate stile, or gate at the bottom. Such a lovely location.

You could well be right about the leasehold sites.  in quite a few places they are on land that is worth far more for other uses than a caravan site and some do not have many years left on the leases

I cannot see that the land of the Marizion site ix good for anything other than a campsite. Perhaps the lease is being hiked to make it much less viable to run?

You’re right there, PD, but the question might well be who runs the site?

     Evening

Winter of 17, two shafts opened up on the 3ways site in the February I think. It was very interesting to see how it was repaired as the holes were breathing shafts from an uncharted mine. Only just finished before the site opened. There are photos on site in the old phone box.

    I’ve seen them👍🏻.

It’s a problem throughout Cornwall due to a lot of the mine workings being uncharted. It’s the reason there are so many park home sites in the county as the houses only need concrete rafts rather then proper foundations. A shaft opened up under a home here and the structure was supported on beams while the shaft was capped.

A few years since we have stayed JK, but I will have a look in September. I know it’s a real problem, a few dogs from Site have been rescued down the years after walking in woods over road, thankfully all ok. There’s a nice Site up the road going back towards St Erth I think, seem to recall it’s one loved by Divers as they provided bottle top ups. Could be a nice location for Yurts I suppose, lightweight, not much in way of foundations needed.

Does anyone know when the club last opened a new non facility site? Serious question as they seem to have all but given up on them.

It sounds to me like most of the Club’s no facility Sites are leased. They are possibly no facility mainly because the Club won’t commit funds to put up anything that costs money and that will be partially outside their control. Much Wenlock, Bromyard, Nunnykirk, not sure about Notgrove, suspect that is leased as well, and possibly the Hereford Site. I think the last two might be old railway cuttings, like Much Wenlock was. Bromyard is an old quarry.

Estate have a lot of pull at Bolton Abbey, and some of the racecourse Sites don’t get a lot of investment from the Club, because they don’t own them.

I suppose majority of Members want flash Sites nowadays, where the Sites are an end destination, rather than a simple pitch up to explore an area.

Aberbran is definitely an old railway station, and Slinfold too is adjacent to an old line. Bourton-on -the-Water is another on an old line. Think that the lot.

Notgrove is owned by the club ,and the main reason, it has not been "upgraded"? with toilets and showers there is no mains drainage, only the four cesspits and one soakaway, which when busy has a 3000gallon honey wagon  tanker in every week and some times two journies,  ,and because the the Cotswold stone is very porous, effluent ,has to be contained to stop it getting into the water courses

I doubt whether it's a matter of giving up on them but if the Club can develop a site with full facilities it will do as A) it will be more popular and B) it will draw more revenue into the coffers. You only have to look at the shock horror in some of the posts on here when it was thought sites would have to open without facilities due to COVID!!! I would be perfectly happy for more sites with minimum facilities but I think that those of us who do are in the minority? Hebden Bridge is a good example where they even have a few serviced pitches.

but part of the 'shock horror' was due to being charged for full facilities when they were shut due to COVID. And the club seemed to think they were quite justified in doing so.

It seems by the site occupancy, over the period of all being "non facilty" that very few members were bothered about it,eithercool

We will use our own facilities and have only used our shower since covid. Although would prefer access to the toilets simply because it minimises emptying. There was no shock horror about it. The warden phoned us about the lack of facilities at Culloden and we were happy to still go. After all we would have only been using the toilets in any event. Over there if we want no facilities we stop on an Aire. Here we would only pick no facilities if 1. It was in the right place and 2. there wasn’t a facility alternative.

Possibly still negotiating the lease for the next ten years? Can’t release next years pitches until finalised? Apparently it’s happened before.....

Marazion is a popular Site, certainly June through to September. We had to book ASAP back in the late 90’s to ensure we got a pitch for the Summer. It’s not open that long, has a short season, think it might be Easter to end of October🤔 It’s one of those Sites where you get a nice mix of outfits, more older stuff rather than all brand new and shiny.

But as said by the hired motor caravan drivers at FM even. at non members prices, they considered the prices very reasonable ,certainly not premium ,that is how those on the "the outside" see the clubs prices even with the present restrictions on, with being asked if possible to use your own on board  facilties, to keep ones self safer

Ps as for paying and not getting a return I guess all the roads you use are perfect?

That’s rather rude. I wouldn’t use it about your choices.

Apart from that, it is where we wanted to be at that moment in time.

But as you and I know or should ,costs may have increased but so have those still employed salaries,, I wish I was earning. the kind of, Money that the occupant of my old job is earning, I would as also consider site fees quite reasonable ,surprised
