Corona Virus Concerns

Are they still on full pay then? If so, that is terrible and they should get back to work as soon as possible. I know people who are working full time and only getting 80% of their normal wages. I think it would have been more fair if they were furloughed and not had their pay increased from the 80%.

My three teaching friends are all still working in schools albeit on reduced hours (from 2 days to 4 days).
I don't begrudge them being on full pay at all, it goes a little way towards making up for how underpaid they are the rest of the time...

Now we have been made aware how care home staff were untested and unwittingly spread coronavirus among those in their care, I trust that all school staff (ancillaries as well as teachers) will be virus tested and found to be clear before schools are reopened, and before there is any risk of them spreading this disease to their pupils..

it is a very good point ET, cant speak for all care homes, and not sure just how many teachers are working in care homes, but where my daughter works, the place is not open to visitors, some staff are living on site, all deliveries have to be left in a utility room, and people like my daughter are temperature checked on arrival and departure, and they have to have a complete change of clothing for working within the home. Probably at less risk than doing a weekly shop in Tescos

Maybe not now, but you wait, in a couple of years when you see what a financial mess the country is in and we are all having to pay far more taxes to pay for the debt, including the poor workers who are only on 80% now. But we're all in this together.

I have not studied the furlough rules, where the government pays 80% of basic salary up to £2500 per month, but it is my understanding that this is paid AND THEY MUST NOT WORK AT THEIR NORMAL OCCUPATION for ANY TIME. Lots of money advice programmes and websites spelling out what to do if your employer wants you to work whilst on it.
I assume this is what you are referring to? If that is the case then the companies/employers need reported because it is wrong.
Our son was working from home, now furloughed as recruitment has virtually ceased, was earning 100% until furlough but his furloughed colleagues were sitting at home bringing in 80% for nothing. It seems odd to me that 80% is probably what you clear after tax, NI and pension contributions plus commute etc so not bad. That said I don't make the rules.
My daughter and several family members are teachers and it's not highly paid just like it's not 9-3 with long holidays...............

You're assuming my attitude will change if I have to pay more tax?
Not so, my own personal view is that teachers, nurses, police to name a few should all be paid more. I have never believed we're all in this together: in that respect our society has remained unchanged.

hI, sorry but this does not seem to make sense.
If furloughed HMG pay 80% but the employer can pay you your normal, full, rate of pay.
Are you saying that you know people who are being paid by the employer, and not furloughed, but at 80% pf their usual pay?

Good post, Bells. You've listed some of the jobs I could and would never do. I have the greatest respect for those who do them and they deserve to be very well paid.
Paying a bit more tax to fund the NHS, education and emergency services is fine by me, too, providing it ensures we get what's needed.

There will be a huge financial cost not just to this country but world wide post this virus. We have seen the EU looking go raise huge amounts on the markets. Likewise we may see the UK reverting to a "War Bond" like system to raise funds. No doubt taxes will have to increase and hopefully some grandiose schemes like H2S scrapped. On a personal scale we will all be poorer a full global recession and a big rise in unemployment. Just see Rolls Royce situation, BA etc. It will never be the same again for our generation. May be too late for many in the leisure industry with site closures Vans unable to be sold etc. A bleak outlook. After seeing the pictures of the Sun worshipers yesterday in huge close contact crowds, there may be worse to come with this disease.

I originally wanted to be a teacher but as I gained more experience after my degree I quickly realised I couldn't cut it. Too many stresses and pressures; the child protection element alone was enough to make me realise I wasn't emotionally tough enough to do the job well. (Same would apply to nursing /police etc)
I have nothing but respect for those who enter vocational professions and agree that if taxes were used in these areas I'd be happy to pay more.

Our teacher daughter has been doing on line teaching from home across the whole age range for her secondary school. Also going into school on a rota. She teaches A level with very good results but normally works a four day week, her take home pay is quite low compared to many proffesions, many teachers work reduced hours in secondary schools for various reasons. When she returns her hours will be further reduced, the latest cutbacks.

If any employer is using the furlough pay scheme (ie 80% pay) and bring any employee into work the employer is breaking the law and the employee has the right to refuse to go to work.
An employer using the scheme can legally top up their employees wages to 100% however again the employee cannot attend work.
There have been around 800 companies reported, quite rightly, for abusing the scheme.
It is expected that as the scheme will be amended as it is to run until the end of October 2020.
Any furloughed employee is still paying NI PAYE and pension contributions on their 80% wage

My 19 year old daughter just said that she feels like her generation (the Millenium kids) have been born into bleak conditions:
" I'll have no full university experience, no job, no house no foreign travel and no social contact"
I couldn't think of a suitable reply.

That reminds me of life 40-50 years ago. Nothing's new.

It’s your daughter & Her generation who will be making the World to suit them as has every generation back. Capt Tom Moore is 80+ years older than your Daughter & he’s still making our world & future generations to his own better👍🏻

" I'll have no full university experience, no job, no house no foreign travel and no social contact"
Those born from the mid 1920's experienced the same apart from the foreign travel bit - Dunkirk, Normandy, North Africa.
Every generation has its own challenges.

Yes I'm fully aware of that and not wishing to take anything away from their sacrifices.
It's all relative though isn't it? At age 19 you don't always have a widened perspective. I think being stuck at home with me rather than in her uni house with her friends has made her more insular in her view! 😊
