planning a trip in the autumn down to portugal.I have the club sat.nav with built in dash cam.I believe that dash cams are totally banned in portugal but I tend to rely on the sites side of the unit for stops enroute!Would leaving the memory card out of the unit satisfy the portugese authorities or do i have to buy another sat.nav.all opinions welcome.

I don't know the answer to your specific question but unless you could prove that it was disabled it could be difficult. I found this Which article interesting for people considering all countries in Europe. The rules in Europe do seem quite ridiculous because if you follow these rules to their logical conclusion how would you be allowed to use a video camera, digital camera or phone all of which have capabilities to record moving images?

I don't know what the position is elsewhere, but in Germany recorded video material showing identifiable strangers or their vehicles may be viewed for personal use only and must not be passed on to a third party without the approval of those persons seen in the footage. If used as evidence in court the material may only show details relevant to the actual incident in question.

All these rules are a problem for UK travellers as the rules here in the UK are few and far between and tend to correctly evolve around safety rather than privacy. If anything the police encourage the use of dash cams because it helps gather evidence when there is a road traffic accident. Many of the laws in Europe seem to defy logic and the there can be no justification for the level of fines imposed.

Not a problem really as long as 'the rules' are known.

The as the answer is obvious. 'Obey the laws of the country you visit'

Would have to agree. Over past eight years, have travelled extensively in Europe, including Portugal, with a Camera mounted on screen (Mobius). It is not classified as a "Dashcam" (they are more often used by model aircraft enthusiasts), but, it does record video, just as a dash cam would. Never had a problem. Would this not come under the heading of whichever treaty which says, as a visitor, if it is legal in your "home" country, you are OK? at least until March 2019 ;)

Portugese law states that is illegal to OWN or USE a dash cam!.....so I buy a new unit and download relevant poi,s or find a way to add poi,s to my infinity unit in the car...(or do not gocool) Wifes idea to go for our golden wedding we last were there in 1988 and she loved it!

I know. So if you want to stay legal and stash it away.
