Why keep telling people not to have the card if they don’t want it? It’s so flipping obvious and it’s the path I and others have chosen because we worked it out for ourselves.

All I’ll add is that, if you like using such phrases, you could try "pot calling kettle" and if input from others upsets you so much, perhaps you shouldn’t read it.

I do hope this thread does not now get closed because of bickering as it has started to provide useful informationon this offer.
So far I have had 5 of the weekly price SMS messages but no plastic card yet, thoughthe last SMS contains the comment that they have "processed all the backlogged orders". Hope they were not sending them out by drone . . . .

Waste of any number of people's time issuing a card that is not going to be used, Esso fuel is not necessarily the cheapest, there are numerous other retailers who are as cheap if not cheaper.

I beg to differ pathfinder. all fuels are not the same as trading standard would have stepped in many years ago when there was 2/3/4 star fuels. so you say there is no difference???most vehicle handbooks state to use the higher octane fuels and specific oils and I take it if you don't you would put any cheapest get engine oil to save a couple of pence. quality fuels and oils will save you money in the long run.

I was refering to the fuel available today, I as many other members on here also remeber when fuel was star rated. So I beg to differ and say super market fuel is the same as the big boys.

I suspect, LL, that you are perhaps thinking of the premium fuels sold by the brand garages. They have additives which the standard fuels do not but we are reliably informed that there is no difference between standard fuels whether sold by supermarkets or other outlets.
It's an issue that has been discussed at great length here many a time.

again you have missed the point, it is not a case of wishing to use Esso fuel it is a question of being able to take advantage of using low cost Esso fuel if you should be passing an Esso garage knowing that you can buy diesel at a much lower price than other garages, after all, applying for and getting the card is FOC. Dont know about you but if i am driving around with only half a tank and see a garage selling diesel 10 pence cheaper than my local garage, I am straight in there.

You put me in mind of a local dog that had to give chase every time a motorbike came by. He could not let it pass unmolested.

I have been following this thread with some interest.
By my own nature I am usually sceptical of offers of this type. However, and it is an 'however' with a number of reservations, I might just apply for this Esso card.
What worries me most is your card details are held by some company or other. If I do decide to go for it I think I will open a bank account with a debit card, separate from my main bank accounts and just transfer enough funds into the new a/c to cover fuel costs then, if there is a breach of security the damage is very limited.
If the price for the following weeks fuel is texted to you every Friday then you know you will be paying that price if you fill up with Esso. If supermarket prices are cheaper in the area you are in then fill up with them!
There are no Esso stations in my area, but If I was on the motorway and the Esso price at a service area was, say £1.50 at the pump and the card price was £1.23 then that is a no brainer and not worth coming off the motorway to find a supermarket which might have a pump price of 3-4p a litre cheaper.
Another reservation I have is the reports on this thread of Esso not taking the amount out of your account for 5 or more days. I like to know where I am with my money so I would prefer it if the transaction was carried out within a day of filling up. There again, if you have an a/c specifically for the Esso card and nothing else that should be a bit more manageable.
As the card costs nothing, then it isn't too much of a problem if it isn't used for 6 months or is used every week, simply use it when it is worthwhile.
I think I'll wait until the new year to apply though, hopefully by then the backlog will have been sorted.
On the subject of branded v supermarket fuels. My current Honda CRV is now three and a half years old and mileage is approaching 50k, almost exclusively on supermarket diesel, without any problems whatsoever. Since starting caravanning in 1990 I have run Montego (65k) Mondeo (35k) Vectra (8k) all petrol, and 2 X-Trails (40k) and Octavia (8k) diesels on supermarket fuel with no problems at all. I also ran, but didn't tow with, a Ford Fusion 1.4 diesel for 75k, again on supermarket diesel without problem until the fuel lift pump packed up. But, apparently it was common practice for the lift pump to pack up around the 70-75k mark on Fusions!

what a sensible approach , I have the card, it works for me and i will continue to use it as and when, however, i will continue to use my local Shell garage as and when and collect Shell points, i get a £5 fuel voucher, free chocky bar and fizzie drink every now and again, as i have said before "never look a gift horse in the mouth" Happy New Year to you all

I'm still waiting for my card. I had a phone call from a guy in the C.C. on 12th December apologizing for the delay but who asked me to re-submit my application because it was the applications from those that applied immediately the card was advertised that somehow "got lost in the system". As an apology he would put a £5.00 credit on my card. I re-applied immediately and got an email later the same day saying that my card would be with me withing the following 7 to 10 working days. I'm still waiting but meantime get texts every Friday with the prices for the next week. It does seem that the launch has been a bit of a shambles and especially for those who applied earliest.
