Member Offer: My Esso Card

New card received and activated. Will it work? Who knows? Not rushing out to try it out.

we have also still not received our card in spite of applying in December. but in the meantime I have been checking my local Esso garages against the Pumpking prices that I get each week via text and this is rather disappointing. no savings on unleaded (worse off by 3p), a saving of 2p on diesel. and I have to pay for the fuel straightaway (no credit). surprised to read that some people have made savings, this must be for people using motorway service station mainly!

Hmm.
The new Ts&Cs do look rather more professional, so a step in the right direction. But I wasn't notified, which I should have been.
"Pump-King will notify the Cardholder of any changes to these Terms and Conditions with 15 days' such prior written notice."

You're lucky to live in an area of the country where there is some price competition going on.
Where I live there is a cosy arrangement where pretty much all the fuel stations charge the same (high) price - including the supermarkets.

Like others (and I guess everyone with the new card) my card has three quarters of my new pin number printed on the front. Whose ludicrous idea was that? I can see no reason for any of the pin code to be on the card.
We are constantly told NOT to write our pin numbers on cards or anywhere where it could be found. It would only take 8 attempts maximum to discover the correct code should I accidentally lose my card or have it stolen. This is NOT acceptable and, unless it is able to be changed to a pin number of my choosing I shall seriously consider reporting the practice to Action Fraud. How can the club condone such a flagrant breach of security?

Whilst I think the new Ts&Cs look rather more professional, I am concerned about my liability should my card be stolen or the details skimmed. With a credit card I have relevant law to help me. With the fuel card it rather feels that PK can just help themselves to my bank balance.
Maybe I'm over-thinking it. After all, it is easy to contact PK to report my card missing or fradulent activity occurring on my account !!!!!!

<smug git> I'm glad I've steered clear of this debacle</smug git>

So far I've counted seven of us whose PIN is 75% printed on the front of the card. Surely this is unacceptable? And unsafe. How many others just haven't noticed, I wonder? By the way, when I rang PK they said that it was not possible to change the PIN. So maybe they will have to reissue the cards again …

I had left a message on Pump Kings answerphone today and at least they had decency to eventually return the phone call.He was obviously aware that this has been flagged up but tried to explain that the 3 digit number and the pin number similarity is purely a co incidence. As previous answer he stated you cannot change your pin.
Now that this problem is out there,on the interweb, how can these cards which are linked to your designated account be safe to use.
I am rapidly loosing faith in this offer,so a pair of scissors is the next step for me.

What an utter fiasco they could not run a p - - - up in the proverbial brewery

This scheme was clearly found at the end of the rainbow as it is obviously a crock of gold (you can insert your own word if you want)

Yes this is a total cook up..... I cannot remember my PIN and no amount of effort to recall or change it has worked; the new card has yet to arrive; the pump price at the nearest (only) Esso filling station is only about 1p/litre more than the pumpking price so probably not worth the hassle of sorting out my card. I can’t be bothered to read through 1000 or more posts however I would like to know if the club have dis-associated themselves from and discontinued this offer that isn’t..... somehow I doubt it. Don’t have a problem using Esso fuel and their premium diesel at 134p/litre compares well with VPower and Ultimate and seems to suit my car.

If its anything like mine, the PIN on the new card will be very easy to remember. It's almost written on the front of the card!!!!!!

This latest fiasco with the PIN is the last straw for me. I've not seen any reports from people saying that their PIN is markedly different from the 4-digit number on the front of the card.
Pump King are no longer an organisation that I want to deal with. Their security seems weak. They've double-charged a few customers, and seem to have charged a few VAT on top of the advertised price. They've changed the Ts&Cs without giving the due notice. I'm concerned about my liability if anything happens to my card. They've been hard for people to contact by phone and email.
I've ordered a new debit card as the first step. I shall put my pumpking card in the safe, and if the situation improves over the next month or two then I'll think about getting it out and giving the new debit card details. But for now I'm out.
Fuel is expensive in my area of the country, and the card could save me quite a bit of money. But the PIN security risk is final straw.

before any of you cut up the card, could I ask you to see if the "pin number" on the front can be Deleted User by a hot iron tip or soldering iron and flatten/remove it. worth a try as you don't want the card but I do and don't want to damage it as used a couple of times without a problem. then let us know if it works. thanks everyone.

Yep, so if you found a card that someone had dropped - perhaps on a club site - you stand a fair chance of being able to guess the PIN????
I hope that someone comes along soon and says that their PIN seems to be truly random. And that our fears are misfounded.
When I had a company fuel card it had my registration number on the front, and was only valid for that car - much more secure.

....but if you lose your Pumpkin Fuel card surely all you have to do is phone their 24/7 customer hotline and report it and they'll block the card immediately??????????
Or you can just phone the bank and block your debit card instead which may make the rest of your holiday a bit tricky

I would have thought that any recompense would be from Debit Card provider if any recompense at all,
Edited to add. I am not at all sure that there might not be a claim against Pump King. As I don't have their card I shan't investigate. The whole thing does seem a shambles though

you could but you would never make any money, because as with the Shell Card and other promotions such as Sat Nav's that have been handled very badly at launch time, once the dust settles people start to reap the rewards, and life goes on, we will all still contribute to the club coffers .
Not condoning what has gone on here and i think it is appalling that the club have not as yet issued any kind of official apology, and as reported on here, are still promoting the Esso card at some caravan show.

This whole scheme is a complete debacle. Pump King just refuse to acknowledge or reply to communication, and I don't see much in the way of interest or interjection from the club who endorsed this to it's members... and shockingly continue to promote and tout it at every opportunity.
I did note that today, my card number and pin number have disappeared from the pk website... possibly as they prepare to issue card #3 with the pin printed on the front!
Has anyone checked out the privacy policy in PK's latest updated revised changed T&Cs (see section 7.1) - I'd love to hear how you get on finding them. Also section 3.1 states the card holder will be able to use the card to draw fuel... I'd say there are a fair few of us who could challenge that one!
I'll continue to wait with baited breath, the arrival of my 3rd card, and will update re: pin number stamped on front (prior to dropping it in the shredder). I don't think the club has much interest in this other than to maximise uptake presumably for the reward they'll get from pk, and this forum is just for us to have a shared moan.

lets look at the greater picture, ...Agency fuel cards, which in essence is what the Esso card is, have been used by hauliers, fleet managers, coach companies for decades, this is not a new concept, and as such the dangers of misuse etc have been with us for decades, and surely the T&C's that say you can only purchase a limited amount of fuel in a given period would mean that anybody finding your card and using it would be limited to probably less than £100 in total spend.
As for PK misusing your debit card, well i assume you do not have a Paypal, Amazon, ebay etc account, much bigger organisations no doubt, but you only need 1 bad apple within the organisation and all sorts of nasties could happen. I seem to recall way way back that the financials for this card are the responsibility of the company that handle Paypal ?, its a bad bad world out there be vigilant

Although you have a point with ref to the other companies, Rufs, the difference is that they allow you to use credit cards on which the holder can set a limit. PK will only let you use a debit card which gives access to your entire bank account.
We have to have trust in the organisations we give our card details to and I’ve not seen anything here that would encourage me to trust PK.

I would find it difficult to have trust in any organisation that does not allow you to change your pin. All the cards I have linked to accounts for either actual money or points, have the facility to change your pin / password. Not that I do it a lot, but then they aren't printed on the front.🤔
