Interesting Petition Part 2

yes the sleeping part is the most dangerous if the unit next door catches fire.
There was a thread on here a few months back that had a video of a fire on a caravan site? The adjacent units were touched by the fire but it was contained.

Also a fire in a car park would usually (hopefully) be nearer to a Fire Station, some sites or these proposed stop overs would could be miles from anywhere? Some of the club sites I have stayed at are up 15 miles from the nearest town. The spacing is to contain the fire to that unit.
Do the Model Standards work in practice? Arguably yes. It was evident from the FRS research that spacing could be narrower for metal caravans, although the construction of timber based residential units required the maintenance of 6m (20 ft) or thereabouts.
There have been very few circumstances over 40 years reported where caravan fires have led to significant spread between units. And here is a good example. A metal caravan was deliberately set on fire by arson in the midst of a park where spacing was 5m between rows and only 3m end to end (as approved by a current and lawfully issued Site Licence). The photos (July 2011) illustrate that the fire burned exactly as noted in the FRS research and did not affect adjoining units, despite the non-standard spacing approved on this park
I don't think you can start messing with lives on this?

This, from the Council's website:
"How to pay
Pay by cash. If you are staying overnight please ensure you only validate your ticket at the paystation prior to leaving" (my bold). Not "parking overnight".

It's still described as dedicated motorhome parking.
I'm not terribly interested in layman documentation at this stage. I'm looking for the committee reports and anything that led to the decision to set it up in the first place.
I might put it forward for a technical study for a planning law group I'm in. Could be interesting.

Yes, would be interesting if you report your findings.

Whenever (and wherever) the use of a caravan (motorised or towed) includes human habitation then the definitions in the 1960 Act are met and, in law, it can not be simply parking.
At Canterbury the council is fully aware that it is not just parking because the facility was deliberately set up in that way.
As pointed out earlier, the model scheme is just that. Canterbury City Council has decided that the spacing in place is sufficient for that location. As also pointed out earlier, should disaster happen then they may have to justify the validity of that decision.
As an aside, the one time we stayed there (about 45 hours including two nights) I felt perfectly safe.

That's good to read. We have considered staying there when using the Tunnel, but have yet to do so.

One wonders about the flammability of motorhomes/caravans compared with fifty odd years ago, although from the photos one sees of such conflagrations, current materials seem as combustible now as then. Perhaps manufacturers need to pay more attention to this after all we now have fire retardant furnishings.

Gosh really? Never thought of that
Actually I was resisting going for a FOI request because it always draws attention to something and I usually prefer to find out as much as I can through reports, journals, appeal decisions etc first.
Althougb in all honesty it's Friday, I've had a busy week and I'll never be using the spaces so I might just forget all about it and pour myself a large one

Mmm, I was hoping to be interested in your response to my earlier question, MorrisT. I guess you have no answer.

I am of the mind that the Club does not cater for motorhoming in the way we can experience it elsewhere. There are claims that we are all "equal". Perhaps. But only if motorhomers "camp" as caravanners do??? I don't think the name change signifies much. As such, we caravan here; motorhome in Europe.
All are equally welcome to use what the Club and CLs provide. The name change is simply to clarify that

To what? Sorry, have I missed something?

Fair enough. But the Club does not offer what we like as motorhomers; so we use the Club sites as caravanners. We are lucky enough to have both a motorhome and a caravan - as well as a tent lurking somewhere (but that gets little, or no, use nowadays).

In order to answer that fully I would need to write extensively about travelling in a motorhome "over there" - and that is not welcome in the UK section I understand.

No, it’s not about travelling over there. You said "But only if motorhomers "camp" as caravanners do???" in relation to club sites. I’m struggling to discover what is different about the way we camp, not travel, here on club sites.
I guess I’ll have to carry on struggling…☹️

Just to throw you one idea - in the main, on Club sites, we have to pay for EHU when we don't need it. Can we leave it there?
0 -
That is no different to numerous caravans that now have solar panels as standard these days but then also most modern LVs also have electric hobs and microwaves
Also when EHU was an extra charge it was (according to our retired warden friends) a constant job "checking" why the orange cable was connected?
0 -
Which is why we use our caravan when we camp over here - as we really don't wish to be without EHU when in that (it's rather old and lacking solar panels and the like), and our motorhome over there - as we can be self sufficient. I am not quite sure why you are arguing with me. I have tried to answer your questions politely and my keyboard has not run away with me, whatever that means.
I was writing about our own experiences and I am surprised that has caused such a reaction.

I’m not arguing with you, Morris. I’m merely trying to understand your earlier comments. In particular "But only if motorhomers "camp" as caravanners do???" which, for the reasons I’ve already stated, puzzle me as I can see no real difference on club sites which was what you were talking about.
However, you want to leave it so that’s fine.

Yes, better left as this (side line) discussion is detracting from the main point of the thread, and what we are now getting distracted by was a mere appendage to the main point I made in a post up-thread. (Maybe this topic needs a new thread?)

You can start one.
0 -
sorry but does that mean you don't use EHU with your MH over here or you don't use your MH over here?
0 -
We don't use our motorhome over here. Why do you ask?

Thank you to MichaelT for updating us on this petition. Unfortunately the debate has ranged far and wide off the original topic with lots of unhelpful posts having to be Deleted User. I am now going to close this thread as I really don't think there is more to add. I will let Rowena make the final decision on whether the thread remains closed.

Sorry David, a throw away remark of mine at the end of a post led to the off topic posts. Not intended. Out of politeness, I answered the posters while trying to suggest that we should ditch the 'drift'.
