Maybe I'm crazy to keep investing in our CL.

Not at all, from me a CL user and willing/accepting to pay the going rate, but you may be crazy trying to explain it to some hard of understanding people who conveniently forget the cost involved in providing facilities.

Cholsey- no problem with your thinking. It just reinforces my argument that the 5 rule is stupid in todays day and age. I would ask you the same question, why carry in with such a restriction. Factor in the competition- ie  going to Haven in North Wales in April - Europitch on a superb site at £11 per night all in. Wonder how long you will be in the network.

I doubt that Cholsey will be too worried about Haven competition in North Wales Fisherman. If I am looking to tout in Bucks I am hardly likely to choose a site in North Wales just because it is cheap.

Don't follow the argument - all I used was an actual instance of what Cls are up against, both in cost of setting up in todays days and the competition out there. Probably same kind of comparisons are seen all over the country.

As Fish has just quoted a pitch in North Wales at £11 for a Europitch I don't understand your comment. Care to explain?

Regardless of location, I don't think that most regular CL users would want to stay at a Haven type site. That is why they choose CLs in the first place, not just due to the money saving aspect.

Location is important to me although it makes sense to shop around for the best price in the location you want to be in. Hardstanding doesn't bother me. I would prefer a grass pitch if it meant some cost saving.

We regularly use Cls but off season why would I pay £15+ for a basic site on the Lleyn peninsular when Haven offer such good value? Its called competition. Like most CC members would  not consider the big sites during school holidays, private or CC.

I don't generally use CLs. If I did then £4 or £5 would not affect my choice. In the case of the OP - and having read reviews - I would plump for the CC site were it not all grass.

We are intending the LLyn Peninsula as part of our summer tour. The Haven site is then £48 according to the way that I read the info.

As for £15 for a CL we happily pay that price for a CC site without facilities and would do so in preference to a Haven site if one were available at a lower price. Price is not our prime consideration.

If the Haven site were more popular at that time of year it would not be £11 I think

The whole idea of this post is "why is the Cl network shrinking"> ET as someone who don't use them I can see your point. Times have changed, expectations are greater, competition  is fiercer. Like you I would not use or pay £48 per pitch at Haven in the summer, lreaving that to families ( Price includes up to 6 people).Other alternatives are then available. Its not price per se that dictates its quality and common sense. Again in July & August you may find the Cls full on the LLeyn, with in many cases more than 5 vans per site. but is such a short season really viable?

I would not use any site on the basis that it was the cheapest option. As for viability I cannot say.

The main reason that I use CC sites is because I perceive them to provide a better experience than some commercial sites and I have no desire to research. I do have a CL earmarked for use in the Holmes Chapel/Macclesfield area.

Sadly the CL network is indeed shrinking. Many customers only pay their annual fees to the CMC purely to access the CL network.  This plus the fact that commercial sites are improving in leaps and bounds and in so many cases offer better value for money, better facilities and better locations than the traditional CMC "all singing all dancing" sites. This will probably mean that CMC customers will start drifting away to use the many good alternatives.

I have used 'commercial sites' can't recall any that I preferred to a CC site. Obviously you know better. As I only have my opinion I must bow to your great knowledge of such matters

I'm not convinced commercial sites, however cheap their special deals might be, have any relevance to the CL network shrinkage. Why would regular CL users want to use a Haven site as an alternative (other commercial chains are available). I certainly know who I'd rather give my money to. smile

Is that what your club have also noticed? ,seeing as you seem so well up with the "information?"you have about the cc being so "behind" with their facilities and not in the "loss leader"prices of other companieswink

I don't think I'm alone in using the CL network for reasons other than price, why would I choose a Haven site over a CL on cost alone. That is not what a CL means to me, CL's hold other values of importance that bigger sites cannot compete with.

It could be that some CLs change into commercial sites so that they no longer have to comply with the maximum 5 caravan rule and 28 day maximum stay.

We use every type. The concern is that at the present rate there wont be a Cl network for the next generation.

If that means the end of sites which turn away my daughter because she has a tent, and turn away my motorhomer neighbour  because he hasn't joined the correct Club...then bring it on. CLs are restrictive and undemocratic. Let's have sites that are open to all.

That could only happen if there was a merger between the CMC and the CCC!

Correction, It could only happen with a change in the regulations governing exemption as enforced by Natural England.

I don't ask site owners  to break rules. I am just pleased to see so many sites which used to be  CLs growing up, expanding,  spreading their wings and welcoming everyone.
