What are you all up to

II too feel sorry both you and especially your granddaughter, @DEBSC and hope that she is admitted onto a ward well before the morning.
I wonder what the situation is like in other European countries. Are their hospitals under the same pressure, as they must have a very similar levels of poorly and aged patients as we have in this country, and if so how do they manage?

It has been a much better day here and the sun showed it's face for a while. I had to return to Specsavers today as I was unable to use one of my pair of new glasses, varifocals, for reading. It turned out because my pupils are rather close together the shape of the glasses' lens was distorting my close vision. They will change the frames for a better fitting pair without a quibble and they should be ready in 10 days or so.

Granddaughters stepdad phoned, seems a Team came down and explained there may not be a bed available at all tonight. Some discussion and it was agreed that with flu on the wards anyway and with her so vulnerable at the present moment she would go home to stay with them tonight and they would keep an eye on her, once another drip of more medication went through. She was very pleased and that was thought to be the best option under the circumstances.

@Wherenext one of our favourite places which we have visited many times. Brought back many happy memories.

Same here @DEBSC hope things get sorted for her quickly. It really is a lottery is A&E, my sister was in, triaged, xrayed, and diagnosed all in two hours a fortnight ago. Couldn’t believe it, I had made her take sandwiches, a drink, a book, phone top up battery.
I did see that many hospitals are still struggling with Flu and COVID patients, and this is having a massive impact on beds. Then as WN says, some folks just don’t have the care to go home to, either in their homes or in sheltered care. Our town has three interim care centres dotted around, so that those no longer requiring medical supervision (I.e drips, oxygen, X-rays, consultant care, etc…) can be accommodated in half way house type care, with professionals like physio’s, Occ health specialists, help with eating and personal care. It helps free up the emergency beds for those who really do need them. My SIL went to one after she broke her hip, better environment than hospital, it gave her more confidence for leaving and getting back home, but she does have lots of family help as well. It’s the care system that is badly broken as far as I am concerned, for elderly and those who need help, of all ages. Add into this all the drug abuse, drink abuse, idiotic driving and it’s a recipe for mayhem. ☹️

A fine jigsaw @Wherenext and I too know where it is, in fact we were there last year.
It looks that the best option for your granddaughter was taken @DEBSC because of the amount of Flu and Covid about. I hope she is well enough to return to her own place soon.
Has been another decent day here although rather chilly, but there is now rain in the air. OH was able to get most of the washing dried outside.

Our Son sent photos of their day out in London yesterday, the weather looked lovely, blue skies, he didn’t even take a coat. Here - grey skies wind and heavy rain again! It hasn’t stopped raining for a few days now. This morning, grey sky.
We have been invited to my brothers for dinner tonight to celebrate his birthday. My sister in law is cooking curry. I’m not sure if that is my brothers choice or as their daughter in law, who’s baby is due any day soon, is also going and they are trying to hurry things up.
Usual Sunday chores before as it’s half price electric day.

Nice day yesterday here, so I managed a couple of hours in garden, but it had dropped really cold mid afternoon, so I ended up just pottering in greenhouse for half an hour. We were out last night at a local venue with friends and neighbours, so a late night, but good fun. It’s foul here today, I am back at Mums, so just done bird feeders and now back in the warm. Won’t be going far today.🥶

We had a short blast of sea air yesterday, this is Flamborough, North Landing. Nice day, a bit fresh and breezy.
Flamborough Head, the Drinking Dinosaur. Not the best angle to take a picture as can’t see the sea arch and the head properly.
Lots of seals on the beach below cliffs. Taken with OH’s camera and telephoto lens not my phone!

🤬😤😡 I am having a mare of an afternoon, just knocked my iPad off chair, and damaged the function side button, won’t work at all. Only way I can change function is to turn off, turn on. So annoying. Hey ho. It’s £300 quid plus for anything beyond a broken screen or battery repair so looks like an early birthday present. It is six years old, and was working perfectly, so very annoyed with myself.

@DEBSC I do hope your grand-daughter is recovering. I think the best decision was made for her to go home with her Mum and step dad. Much better for her than sitting waiting in A&E in an uncomfortable chair waiting for goodness how long for a bed on a ward. Also with all the flu and norovirus around it is better for her to be safely at home. I expect she was very relieved to get back to her Mum's and get into a comfortable bed. I hope you have enjoyed your family day today.
What wonderful photos @heddlo
We had a busy day yesterday as our local son and DIL rang to say that they would come to help clear out our understairs cupboard (our DIL loves a good clear out!) as they were planning a 'tip run'. Goodness what a lot of stuff we found in there. A lot of it was cleared ready to go to the tip and the rest put away neatly. DIL and I then shampooed our living room carpet. We are so very lucky to have them both.

Grand photos, @heddlo and pleased that you had a good day out.
Nice to read that you have such willing helpers living close by @milliehull
Such a shame about your iPad @Takethedogalong could you not replace it with a10" Kindle?
Hope you enjoyed the curry @DEBSC and that the baby didn't appear half way through the meal!😄
Another grey, breezy and chilly day but thankfully no rain. OH took the opportunity to do another round of washing, most of which dried quite well outside. Housework and dog walking for me.

@nelliethehooker thanks but all my devices are Apple, I like them to be linked and I do find the system very intuitive and therefore easy to operate. I know when my new one arrives I can simply get my old and new to share my information easily once I put in security back up. I found receipt for my old iPad, bought in 2019, so it’s had a good run really. New one won’t have the side home button, so no doubt I shall have to get used to retina ID rather than my stubby thumb print.
Just arrived🤩 The fun starts now…..

Hope your granddaughter is feeling better @DEBSC - she certainly does seem to go through it.
Lovely photos @heddlo - Flambro's one of our favourite spots as well and not very far at all from home, If it wasn't so grey, murky and misty as it is at the moment, you could almost see it from the house.
Hope you're getting on well with the new iPad @Takethedogalong - I made the switch to all Apple products over 10 years ago and I wouldn't dream of having anything else. As you say, everything is synced for a seamless links between all devices and it's brilliant. Just have to log into your Apple account and everything is automatically updated on the new device, However, the most attractive feature of the Apple operating system, in my opinion, is that it's far more resilient than, say, Windows. Power cuts just don't affect it whereas with Windows, if it isn't switched off properly, it is almost guaranteed to throw a wobbly.

Good Luck @Takethedogalong
Yet another dull, grey, damp chilly day here.
It seems we are aiming at free care costs should the need arise 🫣!
Just dropped the car for advisory work following it's MOT last week, rubber suspension covers at front both sides, front brakes both sides. I'd asked them about a new battery at the same time as it seemed iffy - realised it was replaced under warranty 8 years ago,. Battery died on Saturday, builder gave me a jump start this morning. Upside £10 battery test charge saved 🤣. Walked to the bus stop after dropping the car to check times, buses hourly, one due and it came, in 4 minutes. The devil takes a care of his own!
Car tax due. House insurance renewal came in at £170 increase. One phone call, very little haggling, reduced to £69 😡. Plus of course refurb work, only labour to pay, but house throws it's surprises! So we know tgeres extras, electrics in the kitchen now comply to regulations! And i had a wobble and had smaller cupboards to make the island shorter, the designer had said it was slightly longer - but 8 inches was, to me, more than a little. Better a few pounds at this stage thdn thousands if we couldn't live with it. It would make the turning circle tight by the door make Decorators will be on top.
Saturday Was a crazy start to the day. As I didn't need to be up for workmen I decided to sleep in a bit. 0845 I rise, phone rings almost immediately a friend, to say her husband, a lorry driver mechanic, had been in hospital for a week. He'd fallen, back first into the inspection pit. Air ambulance summoned, but stood down - he missed his ride in it. Multiple breaks/cracks and snaps of bones including vertebrae. He landed on chains but not head first.
Towards the end of the call, dog going crazy, son and grandson arrived for a bit whilst their dog being groomed. Grandson had his 3rd breakfast, hes clearly over his D&V, whilst I had mine, then we went out to use his remote control car. They departed after about 90 minutes. So I restarted my morning about 1130 🫣. That's when I discovered the car battery had died.
Oh and to crown it, we had a phone call from Papworth to say OH"s device, defib, kicked in in tge early hours to correct fast heart beat, was he ok? He knew nothing, par for the course for him, only the 3rd time in almost 7 years....
@DEBSC I hope you granddaughter is improving. I'm another that thinks it was a wise decision not to stay in hospital under the circumstances.
@heddlo have you heard from your NZ friends? I do hope so. I think there'll be a lot to come out in an enquiry about the landslip into the campground from what I'm reading. Weather hasn't improved. This is the last week of the school summer holidays.

Hope your granddaughter is making progress @DEBSC.
Absolutely hate sorting out insurance @Bakers2 - especially car insurance. There are always questions which I seem to have difficulty in answering, especially on comparison sites and how it transfers info to the 'actual insureres'. Recently did the insurance for our second car, where the car and insurance are in my name but my wife is the main driver. Eventually I settled on one, sorted out all the payments and then noticed that it came up as me not owning another car, when, in fact, I do. Thought I'd better ring them up in case it 'came back to bite me' at a later stage...... The chap on the phone changed it for me and asked me if I wanted the good news or bad news first....!!! The bad news is that it cost me £30 for the change. The good new was that by changing No to Yes, it saved me £180 on the years premium!!
Good to read everyone's news.
Oh well.... just off out now to collect the prescriptions from the chemist. Mind you, the 'Do you want a carrier bag?' joke, is wearing a bit thin now!!!
David

David - I keep threatening our chemist that next time I go in, I'll bring a wheelbarrow🤣😂😉

Very grey here, again, and chilly too. Weekend was busy, visit to our son on Saturday, taking along the 2 boys to give Mummy peace to make a birthday cake, do laundry and take a load of cardboard to the recycling centre. We picked them up at 10 and were not back again till nearly 5. Lunch and a good chat with son and DIL, OH actually got him to open a junior ISA for his daughter so we can transfer some of her savings into it next tax year.
Decisions discussed and agreed on what to do with the savings we hold for both their children, and we will do similar with Callum’s funds. Good to get things sorted and streamlined!
After lunch the boys went to find their cousin who was up in her bedroom, so we saw nothing of them till it was time to set off home. She is very patient with them, I think they were mainly playing video games.
On Sunday we were at DD’s and I took the boys to the Transport Museum in town for a couple of hours. Never seen it so busy there before, was difficult to find a parking place. Mummy was pleased to be able to do more cake stuff and more washing without interruptions.
The Touareg goes to the garage tomorrow, hopefully to be sorted out. They will need it for a few days, so I will have to return home on the bus. 2 buses required so will be a lengthy trip. Early start too as car has to be dropped off by 9 and the traffic will be terrible, not helped by the long delays due to at least 2 lots of roadworks on the usual route. May have to go a different way.
Just been out to empty the car and found the battery was flat, so now charging it up.

@richardandros crikey, took a couple of minutes to transfer most stuff. Just sensitive stuff requiring extra security to put in, but it’s all up and working now. My old one will still charge, and I can get into most things from start up, but only via digital passkey. So it’s choose an app, use that, then shut down, re open again. New iPad doesn’t have a mini jack point, so I will need to use Bluetooth headphones as I listen to audiobooks overnight. But I do have an adaptor if needed.
I think you are having a session like me @Bakers2 one thing after another sent to challenge. Hope you get all sorted. Same with you @KjellNN as well.
We have fitters here installing a brand new inner unit to our gas fire, old one not working well, so we decided to update. We have good ch radiator in front room so it’s really only for those slightly chilly evenings.
@DEBSC hope your GD is doing ok.
OH has a bi monthly tablet sort out, I think most folks with any kind of heart history end up on lots of different tablets. I bought him three, one week boxes so he does it a couple of times before repeats.

@Bakers2 no I haven’t heard from my friend in NZ yet. I’m hoping she is just busy🤞🏻. She lives a bit south of Kerikeri, right up in Northland, so I’m hoping she didn’t have too many problems. Good luck with your car and all the renovations. We had our house insurance renewal recently and we were surprised at only a £40 increase, we didn’t argue!

@heddlo
@heddlo @heddlo i love Kerikeri, I believe it means dig dig? Good growing area. Northland seems to have been hit but it appears patchy. Hopefully it'll be because your friends are busy.
We've found New Zealand's best homes on C4 with Phil Spencer and are drinking in the scenery. Wow their must be some EXTREMELY rich folk. Especially those building bach's, holiday home and pronounced batch 🤔
@heddlo yay.....
@Takethedogalong That appears quite simple 🤞
With regards pills, I put out, and ensure OH's are taken! I've never sorted into pill boxes, I assumed they're best in their packets, especially if a hospital visit is required. We've had 2 instances where the ward haven't had supplies of necessary meds, and some like Warfin, not that he is on it now, are important......

OH did well last year with insurances. Having not found anything less expensive elsewhere for the cars, she tackled the current insurer and managed to get it for quite a bit less than even the 2024 premium. Then the house insurance, which we had to move to a different provider last year, came out much less by moving to yet another, still well known, provider. So good results all round.

Thank you for all the good wishes for our granddaughter. Sadly things have got no better and I’m afraid I am about to rant, it’s probably not the place for it but I need to get it out of my system. She was blue lighted into hospital again yesterday early evening as she had gone into anaphylactic shock. She was rushed straight into Resus but no beds so had to be revived and then treated in the corridor. Lots of medication given through a catheter drip overnight and treated in the corridor overnight. Again two Drs decided to admit her but no beds available. This morning at 5am! they needed the resus bed as advance warning of someone coming in. Could she get up and sit in A&E for an hour just to make sure well enough to go home. So she had to sit there feeling so unwell then call her stepdad at 6am to pick her up! Good job he could or she would have been stranded. I just phoned her, she’s feeling very unwell and very tired. We live in a place where new estates are being built on every patch of land available, including productive farmland. But the hospital, the only one for 50 miles, gets no bigger than it was 50 years ago, and all the cottage hospitals have been closed down. We rely on the NHS and they do their best but it’s getting so bad. I really appreciate all your good wishes and I’m going to say no more about all of this. I’m really sorry for the rant guys.
