Indeed, I know it's been done with a double decker but... no wait that was a film wasn't it.

Of course it was a film they went aboard...

Some years ago we were at Clumber Park  and there were two very large yanky motor caravans the owners of which had asked the site warden if he thought they could get to Aknahara so he said he contacted the site to be told that touring coaches pass by regularly  so the two motor caravan owners said if they can go so can we as part of our tour that was before the NC500 took off

DEFRA has imposed a restriction & continually revisits the subject. You struggle to think outside the box DK. I know a lot-not because I’m clever but because it was & is my life. I have friends who are in Forestry who keep me abreast of rules & laws. You are sifting over info without absorbing it. You can’t make points if your points are based on what’s floating around in your head you need knowledge to throw out a line that disparages others beliefs based on knowledge, facts & law. I doubt anyone would want to start from new to install a chimney & stove with all its expense based on the shifting sands of Govt Green whims. They will never ban woodburners-coal?, yes but wood & its £billions are here to stay.

Regarding wood burning stoves, after our 'holiday cottage' last February the stove easily heated a two story lounge with a £5 sack of wood lasting about three nights and really we were too warm. We looked into getting one but as we don't have an old fashioned chimney it would need a flue knocking through to roof height at a cost of £4000 which we didn't go for. Much cheaper if you have a chimney we were told.

Just noticed in your photo Tda that you have one of those fans on the top, friends of our have two and it really does spread the warmth and just remember that another friend has one not so common here although they are sold on Amazon and other places.

We have put a older water butt that we thought was useless but had another look at it and now fixed to the wall near the front door and OH has installed new guttering to the door canopy so all we need now is rain, why we had not thought of it before as quite a bit of rain lands on the canopy and we will put some more water butts about in the Autumn as a small greenhouse is going up so more guttering and a water butt.

Well the roads around the south of France will be busy this weekend as folk go home after the holidays, saw a few today with roof boots on whilst out doing a bit more shopping and more guttering bits.

A lot of folk forget to add in building costs.  I blocked all 6 of our fire places but left the chimneys in place.  When we decided to get a wood burner I reopened the fireplace and the additional building works came to over £1 thousand pounds to comply with the various regulations.  We only burn kiln dried wood which is a little more expensive but produces little ash and gives out a lot of heat.  We have only had our chimney swept once in 13 years.  If we had a modern house with stud walls I would run the central heating from the fire

We collect quite a lot of water from our greenhouse roof RedKite, it all helps...if only we had some rain just now?! Still nothing in the forecast. frown Lots of people returnng home here too, the last rush before schools start again etc.

ABM will be miffed to hear we were offered a free ticket for the GDSF but neither of us can use it so local daughter is going instead as her partner is playing music there.

Strangely enough although very dry with the ground cracked etc it's quite chilly this evening and autumn feels as if it's on the way. A little break in Devon for us soon, just one of those chill out visits.smile

We had a day of very useful rain yesterday - heavy but not torrential - so no flooding in this area thankfully and the water butts are now full again. Also our grass has greened up quite considerably. We have a water butt at the bottom of our garden that collects the water from the guttering on our shed. It is an old water tank given to us many years ago by our neighbour at the time. It is very useful having one down there as it saves carrying watering cans up and down the garden.

Local son is taking me to Currys PC World tomorrow for me to get a new laptop. Mine is so slow it is like watching paint dry. Our techy SIL has had a look at it and says it is too old - about 7 years - to do anything with it. Wish me luck as I have no idea what to look for or how to set it up! I think I am going to need a lot of help 😁

You are still accusing me of something that I have not said. Please detail what in my post that has caused you to come to this conclusion. The point of my original post was because there was a discussion on whether someone should install a wood burning stove. As it happens that contributor has said since, that it would be difficult because of the design of their house. You have clearly not been following the post closely enough and you are jumping to conclusions. You freely admit that it is unlikely that someone would start from new (your words) All I was doing was hypothecating the pros and cons of a new installation which strangely you seem to agree with? As far as banning wood burning stoves none of us know whether that will happen, however recent Government statistics point to the fact that woodburning stoves emit more (PM's) than road transport.

Re new laptop. If you can competently manage a Windows 7 laptop I somehow doubt you will have much trouble with a Windows 10/11 one. What Microsoft seem to be doing with their new operating systems is to make them look and feel like a smart phone/tablet, everything is much more graphical. Underneath there is much that is very similar to your old machine. I find that if I can't work something out on the computer, I do an online search for the issue I can't work out. Often there is a YouTube video which shows you in easy steps how to do things. Might be an idea to buy a USB flash drive, if you don't already have one, so that you can copy any files across.

Yes, that little fan is great. An Aldi Special Buy, we were a bit sceptical pre purchase, but it works really well. I am going to have a look at putting our gas kettle on top of stove, not sure if it will boil, but can preheat for free, then finish off on gas hob. That’s if I can shift the dog out of the way🤣

Brue,  I'm not at all miffed, upset, disconcerted or hacked off in any way that you can think of cos I'm sitting here t-t-typing in the warm but draughty 'Office' { spare bedroom} listening to  Steam Fair FM  on t'internet  laughing.  Indeed Some of my rather younger friends are quite pleased I've given up the Trek down to, and round, the GDSF, cos it allowed them to act their ages*** as well  innocent.  Just hope that the Recipient of the ticket  fully enjoys the experience  !!

Some years ago, I bought a high-end Windows PC.  After six months, it did an update and it completely wrecked it.  It went back to Currys, three times in a week and their techies couldn't sort it out.  One of them swore by Apple computers and said he would use nothing else at home.  Although it was a big step, price-wise, I bit the bullet and having got a full refund on the PC, bought an iMac 27.  Took a bit of getting used to at first but now, I am completely sold on Apple products and haven't had a single problem or quirk with it over the last 6 years or so.  Recently bought a MacBook Air for caravan use and with the M1 chip, is lightning fast. The thing I really like is that everything is sync'd between the two computers and my phone.  I would never contemplate going back to Windows and although Apple products are expensive - in my opinion they're worth every penny.

My sentiments exactly, we are now on a fully Apple platform. It depends on what Millie wants to use it for, but a basic iPad might be adequate and they at the lower end of the price scale. I have found all the Apple tech, so easy to get to grips with compared to Windows and they don’t slow up as much over time. I particularly like that when it’s time to update, you just lie the old one next to the new one and everything is sorted with minimal input from myself.

Oh agrees with r&r and SteveL with apple products even got me basic iPad whilst we were in UK in May this year still taking me time to get used to it  although doing this post on an older ASUS Chromebook, we have a friend who had a lot of trouble with windows as she is no techie and hate all the new stuff so has an old Dell netbook and OH had to change a lot around so she could use it as she wanted windows 7  but only uses it for about 5 to 10 minutes a day less if possible although her son gave her an Iphone and told her to keep it on and she does use that as her son lives in South Africa it is easy for her to use facetime, as said before OH ex IT background does not like windows at all and has never got on with it but we are all different, even our friends father who is 96 years old and will use the older iPad our friends gave him.

Well another few very warm days and hopefully some storms are on the way.

I think there is probably an advantage in sticking with what you know. They are also very expensive. I have been using Windows since 3.1 and even as they upgrade over the years there is still a lot of familiarity so should be easier to get used to. I have always had either Toshiba or HP laptops although at home I use a high end Dell desktop. I have a small HP, 14 inch screen I think, which I use in the motorhome when we are away. Margaret has a 15 inch screen. If you never move the laptop perhaps select a larger screen and think about the processor, i5 core would be good but I am sure your SIL is already onto that.

A total Apple convert here. Yes they are expensive, but so easy to use. I certainly couldn’t be dipping between the two nowadays, liked Microsoft tech when I was at work, but just find Apple phones, iPads, MacBook so easy to set up and use. We keep them as long as possible as well. I have only just ditched an iPhone 7 recently. Got a new Apple phone for under £350 from Curry’s. They had a special offer on, so I pounced. An SE, loads of memory, which is what I needed. Took 10 seconds to migrate everything from old phone to new. A few security hoops for some Apps and that was it.

Do Microsoft phones and Pads link information in a similar manner? I don’t know much about them. We have a new Smart TV that is Microsoft. It’s close to getting the remote thrown at it every night🤬 I know the issues will be ours, but it’s easier to go look at the old TV🤣

Interesting reading about laptops.  Since ours packed up a few years ago OH has been using his Dell desktop for everything.  Like you Milliehull we can’t justify Apple products; although they would be nice they aren’t compatible with anything else we use so would need to change items, we do use iPads though.  OH problem is mainly that being a photographer he needs so much processing power and so much memory any cheaper end laptops aren’t good enough (apparently!).  He would like a laptop to use when we’re away but the right spec is pricey.  We will continue our ‘discussions’ I’m sure.
