Horrible day now, pouring rain since late morning, wind picking up and gusting. Hope it calms down before we leave tomorrow.

Caravan almost fully packed, fridge on just got the food to go in once its cold enough.

Well the voting in Scotland went the way we thought so no surprise there. sealed

Weather for next week doesn't look to be great, certainly not what we normally get in May.

I did have a successful moment earlier on. I have been looking for sometime to add a day onto our booking  at Brora  yay today there was availability. Decided I would ring the site and get the warden to do the amendment as it meant cancelling a day at Dunnet head and adding it to Brora. I didn't want to mess it up and end up with no site, would just be my luck to cancel Dunnet then find Brora taken.

That's us all sorted now for a 3 week trip round the coast of Scotland. Flying visit to some stops, longer at others but its not our first time doing it.

Millie, sorry you've had to make a tough decision on the caravan, like other's have said it will happen to us all at some stage. We gave ours up when we returned from Germany, was a hard decision. It took us many years before bought again and have not been without one now for 28 years. I'm sure you will enjoy other ways to get away. smile

    Heddlo

Sorry to hear about your hips. I know the feeling having had my right hip replaced about 10 years ago. No operation I imagine is actually looked forward to but from what you describe it seems as though it is having a major adverse effect on you. Hip replacements are very successful and could give you a new lease of mobility, you could surprise yourself. The trouble with hips is that they don't get better on their own, physio can help but even that has limitations. Best to follow the advice of the doctors.

So sorry to hear about your hip problems Heddlo.  I do hope the medics can help.  OH had his hip replaced over 15 years ago and it gave him a new lease of life but it is beginning to wear out now and is giving him problems.  Replacing a replacement is a much bigger op so he is not keen. Take the medics advice.. What a shame it is causing problems on your holiday. The weather is dire here in E Anglia as well but is forecast to be better from tomorrow. I hope you can enjoy the rest of your holiday.

I somehow suspect that a couple of hip replacements will be pencilled in for me at some point, I’ve already got a bionic shoulder. OH and I were both chuckling about a pair of Wallace and Gromit Trousers to get around in at some point, we both ache at times. Awful when it affects your sleep and daily movement though, you just feel worn out. I do know lots of folks who have had hip (and knee) joints operated on though, very successfully.

Just reading about the Hitachi trains☹️ Two main routes severely affected, that’s going to spoil a few holidays and meet ups. Doesn’t sound like a quick fix either.

I have just been going through some of the boxes we brought home from the caravan.  It appears I won't have to shop in Boots for toiletries or medicines for quite some while laughing

We used most of our caravan medical supplies and toiletries during the lockdown Millie and have had to replenish virtually everything.

We delved into the boxes that contained our new music system this morning whilst the rain battered down. We did move the furniture around yesterday but had to make some more adjustments when we set it all up so that took care of the morning.

The rain didn't do anything to persuade me out of doors so I did a bit of cooking to put a few things in the freezer for MiL whilst we're away.

Have to pay a visit to the tip tomorrow. Wonder if I'll manage to sleep tonight?undecided

Sorry to hear that you are selling the van Millie. If it is any help, we have never regretted it, even though I was very upset at the time. Our dealer offered us a price over the phone and we fully expected them to drop the price when we actually got there, but no, they quickly looked it over and were true to their word. So hopefully for you. We loved it for the many many years that we toured but we really don't miss it now. I think we all have to be realistic and know when it's the time to stop, and then enjoy a different type of holiday.

Thank you for your comments DEBSC. They are very encouraging. I dont really think we will regret our decision as we have thought about it long and hard. We have to he realistic at our age. New opportunities lie ahead! We just hope all will go well with the dealer on  Monday.

Great excitement today - I am going into an actual shop! First time since March 2020. I’ve got a list, shopping bags, loose fruit and veg bags, mask and card. Will I find everything I want, as they’ve probably changed the layout?

Top of the list? Cream cakes and a Sunday paper.

Poor weather yesterday so the proposed gardening tasks at DD's did not get done, hopefully it will be better today.

OH has been spending time looking for CLs or alternatives to replace some of the Club sites on our trip and has had moderate success.  She has booked Spital Caravans in Kendal, and finally managed to contact and book our usual CL in North Wales.  Now looking at a CL called Spring Thyme not too far from Scotch Corner for the last site on our return journey.

Beginning to feel a bit more normal! We're just back from our first real shopping trip with bags full of stuff I've chosen myself, rather than had picked for me. Loose fruit and veg. Selected which large fillet of smoked haddock I wanted (and had it skinned for me). Reduced buns (for the freezer ready for silaging). Oh, and a bottle od Bedrock gin and two cream cakes.

We've not been for 14 months but several staff recoginsed and welcomed us back, and asked about the farm.  Booths at Kirkby Lonsdale. Perfect sized shop.

Now to put it all away.

We do miss the Service Counters when shopping online. The ability to see what you are buying and how much of it that you need is good. Sadly service counters are disappearing in supermarkets and it could be only Booths and Waitrose with them in future although I did notice M&S have limited counters in the main store in MK but don't know how widespread they are in their smaller stores.

Our M&S has a bakery, and they have just converted the former cafe at the one near DD into a bakery.     The big store at Braehead had a  deli counter, not sure if it is still there.

Still meat and fish and deli counters at our Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Sainsburys.

As you may know I'm a big fan of finding old photographs of this area. This is Sunderland and judging by the car registration plates it is 1965/66 and in any case the Town hall was pulled down in 1971.

Ever since I first saw it there was something bugging me about it, something was 'wrong' with it but I couldn't work what 'it' was. I've been studying it for a number of days now but I finally spotted it this morning. Can anyone spot it? It is not hidden in any way.

    I'll post back soon.

We are just home after a nice weekend at Strathclyde Park club site. Weather was great on Friday when we arrived so we had a BBQ and were able to sit outside for a while. Weather yesterday was rubbish rained most of the day I did manage to get a cycle round the park in the morning but it poured all day after so we took a drive to the GO Outdoors near the site to get some bits and pieces. Easy hours tow home today a bit windy on the M77 which goes quite high up at some points so had to be careful. Van now back on it’s space in the drive won’t be away now for a couple of weeks. It’s my birthday today so will just be relaxing and maybe have a couple of beers later.

Perhaps it was reprinted at a later date and somebody was having a laugh. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The guy's not dressed right either. Other folk are wearing coats and hats while he's in his shirt sleeves.

It's kind of spooky though 👻

    Kj

I think you will find that, certainly Tesco, Asda and Sainsburys are soon to stop most of their service counters, not sure about Morrisons. It is quite an expensive operation to run especially with the likes of the discounters where everything is prepacked. It seems to mainly apply to Deli counters but in some it also applies to Bakery. Logic would seem to suggest if you go down that route and looking for savings on staff costs then meat and fish will likely follow.

Happy birthday Francis, hope you've had a good one 🎂

Milliehull sad to read your selling your caravan, hope you get a good deal. Sadly it comes to most of us, I've not given up getting a small camper at some point. I do hope you get to see you NI family, its a real mish mash 🤐. Harder for you as yours are so more physically closer and part of the UK. We can travel to NZ but they're not taking folk....... Please stay on the forum I do want to do a cathedral tour and will one of these days.

Busy pacing myself on loft clearance, 36 years worth and married to a Hoarder as well. Loft has never been my domain but making some headway. Boxes to go to son, daughter's stuff awaiting clearance to take to charity shops. Been putting things in fb and surprised at the fast uptake. Still much to go but little and often is my motto. Trouble is much is shifted from the loft to decorate elsewhere, the reason I didn't start in lockdown! Once that's sorted it's the pleasure of our sheds 😱😱

Stay safe folks, nice that's it warmer today although the wind is chilly when the sun goes in. We had good steady rain yesterday water butt's full but don't think its generally been enough. Odd swift light showers today but dried my washing outside.

Good drive up here today, took 3 hours and that included a lunch break.

Rain on and off with sunny spells. Travelling through the Great Glen was stunning even with the clouds rolling down the mountains.

We are in a place called Achindarroch, its between Oban and Fort William. Nice private site, surrounded by hills. Mixed weather but we can see blue skies among the rolling clouds.

    Happy Birthday Francis 🍾🍰🍟🐟

    You could well be right.

there is a famous video of someone using a 'mobile' in a Charlie Chaplin film  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FC70jYTrUo

and another from 1938 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtY9nw4VxHw  although this one has been allegedly reported as actually being a radio telephone:

'The lady you see is my great grandmother Gertrude Jones.'

'She was 17 years old. I asked her about this video and she remembers it quite clearly. She says Dupont had a telephone communications section in the factory.'

'They were experimenting with wireless telephones. Gertrude and five other women were given these wireless phones to test out for a week.'

'Gertrude is talking to one of the scientists holding another wireless phone who is off to her right as she walks by.

personally I think that's a cover up and I prefer the time traveller theory.

When teaching and usually with sixth formers I used to say to them 'if any of you go on to invert a time machine I want you to come back to this moment (I'd read out the time and date) and meet me in the corridor in 10 seconds when I leave this classroom ...now'

I used to wander out and come back in either looking dejected and say something along 'what a useless lot you are, I'm wasting my time here' or pick on someone and say 'you did it well done, shame you lost all your hair though'

Corners, have you heard the one about spec savers...wink

Hope you enjoy your break Tammygirl, nice place to be.

Francis, hope your birthday is going well! 🍺🌞

It's been nice and warm here today, what a difference that makes. OH has been putting some trellis up, it's been propped up for a few weeks and is finally standing on it's own...another job done.

Hope the caravan sale has worked out well Millie.

I daren't look in our loft Bakers2, we never, ever put anything in a loft till we arrived here, home number eight and we finally did it...we will have to tackle it soon. I've just said goodbye to the final re-cycling bags from inside our home, nice to see the empty space and later on will tackle some other things stashed away outside.

Happy Birthday, Francis, hope you enjoyed your fish and chips!!

TG the site you are staying on just be just up the road from one we  used in the distant past, Lagnaha Farm, at Duror. Hope the weather is better than the last time we were there, as it was a week of rain similar to what we had yesterday.

Thankfully today was a lot better than yesterday, as all I managed then was 4 shortish walks from the site clad in all my wet weather gear including wellies. Today we parked at Cwm Ivy and walked out through Whittier Nature Reserve  to Berges Island. It was fine for most of the day but we did have the occasional heavy rain shower when we got back to the van.
