They were saying up at the reserve that a Chiffchaff had been seen over the weekend coming in up over the cliffs.

It's only a mental list.
SEO's are one of Mrs. WNs favourite birds, mainly as a result of seeing them nesting on the Orkneys many years ago. We were astounded to see them nesting in the centre of France one year after coming across it when out cycling in 30° heat. Very strange but just as lovely.

It is very sad to report that after giving Birders from as far away as cornwall and dorset many months of pleasure by their pressence, that the waxwings will not be seen again in Bradley Stoke Tescos as the Rowan trees are beeing ripped out by the management of the Willow Brook Centre.
Absolutely disgraceful. I guess they will also loose mine and I hope many others custom.

Found this, seems like the authority is thinking more of car parking than the trees. Why don't they clear some of the asphalt from around the trees and sort out a watering regime. If the trees are producing enough berries to feed Waxwings it can't be beyond recover!

I have just had a drive past, and all but a couple of trees have already been replaced with similar size trees. Fully agree that the trees that could sustain a flock of birds with berries for 3 months could not be in to much difficulty. Hard to imagine how these new same size trees would be any healthier.
One photographer was asked to move on and stop taking pics. My feeling is that the number of interested watchers on occasions was the main reason for this especially as it has taken place so soon after the birds had moved away.

Rowans can suffer from fire blight so although it's sad news to hear about their destruction hopefully the new trees will be healthy and strong? Maybe anyone reading this will think about planting a Rowan, they don't cast too much shade and are attractive to humans and birds.

01.00am last night, I was surprised to hear a bird with a high pitched trill, whistling away as though it was first light.
I could not see anything as it was very dark with just a low glow from street lighting.
Any suggestions what would be so noisy at that time, as I do not recall any previous hearings.

Finally caught sight of this bird long enough to catch a snap through the upstairs window this morning. I believe it is a blackcap that visits the feeder fleetingly every day, no sign of a female though. As ever willing to be corrected on species.

Looks like it could be a Blackcap then, nice to see them around, it's got quite a "sweet" song. We have a pair of regulars in our garden. The female has a brown cap....here's a Blackcap link.

We had to pay a visit to Davan caravans at Weston Super Mare today, to stock up on bits and pieces and to try out the Duvalay mattresses. So it was a good excuse to also call in on the SEO's down the road at Uphill.
Only one around but well worth the visit, hope not to bore you all with more pics. Nice little male Stonechat came along and perched quite close.

Thanks GL, They are about 30 miles from us, but noted on our local bird blog last night that 2 have turned up at Aust on the Severn Estuary which is about 6 miles away.
The ones at Uphill are very reliable so always worth a trip.

GL - There are SEO at Oulton Marshes, Carlton Marshes, Haddiscoe Island, Burgh Castle, Breydon Water and Halvergate. Guess a lot of them will be moving on shortly.
When visiting daughter I always wander down to Oulton Marshes about 3.3opm, never been disappointed yet.

Just had an email from Stephen Mace the Mink co-ordinator to say the trap put out by the gamekeeper caught a Mink this morning! I have asked if trap will stay in place....nice when a plan comes together.

If you park by the church on Church lane and walk down the track (with the church on your right) you come to a T-Junction turn right and in approx. 200 yards turn left and walk along the track, when you come to the sheep pen on the right you will often see the Owls around that area on both sides of the track. You can walk up to the rail tracks which overlook the river and Carlton marshes. In all about half a mile. Hope this helps.

Just back from Monaco, a football watching trip, but managed to see a few birds. Lots of crag martins flying around the Rock, swallows moving through. Blackcaps and chiffchaffs everywhere. Indian silverbills in the parks, assume originally escaped cagebirds. Yellow legged gulls very tame! Good trip, shame about the football though!

Good day today, went to Carlton Marshes and saw Red throated diver but too far to photo, also godwits, stonechat etc. Went to daughters so about 4pm wandered down to Oulton Marsh and saw 2 x SEO.
GL - don't know about mornings I've only been a couple of hours before light starts to fade. One of the owls sat for quite a while on a piece of broken fence by the railway tracks. I will post photo's later

After a wet morning the sun came out in the afternoon and I rode down to Alkborough Flats. On the pool by the first bird hide there were a few Shelduck, some Teal, about 50 Avocets and roughly 100 Black-tailed Godwits and then a Marsh Harrier flew over the reeds. Back at the CL I spotted a Waxwing high on an oak tree at the back of the site. Managed a photo but too far away to be of good quality. A good day all round.

Just mentioned this on another thread but for a few weeks this magnificent creature has been seen off the south Devon coast. Latest sightings off Berry Head near Brixham today
