Came back from Salzburg the other day via Munich and Stuttgart.  Vile, essentially just one long major roadwork.

Truck drivers are reporting that it is taking around twice as long to get across Germany using that route as it should do.

And not helped by an hour's delay getting into Germany from Austria due to border controls in force.

There are of course alternative routes available!!! As much as I like Germany and Austria the myth of German efficiency does not seem to extend to their motorways. Unlike of UK motorways where work is 24/ 7 they seem to break for lunch breaks, bank holidays,
weekends so everything takes ten times as long, at least that is the impression you get. They are also fond of coning off miles and miles of motorway just for a bit of grass cutting. We don't often use the Munich to Salzburg route but we did this year and
it was indeed very slow in both countries. We went through two border controls, one coming into Germany and one entering France and both we were waved through with no delay.

Were the jams in both directions?

Yes, massive in both directions, plus on feeder roads in the area.

Basically the entire West German motorway network is being upgraded to modern three lane standards.  All at the same time!

Isn't going to be finished any time soon, that's for sure.

Off topic but another Myth  was blown ref the German railway system, on a railway tour when we used their system not one but the Majority of the trains we used were either late or cancelled, our tour missed an important connection one dayFrown, the two services that were on time were London -Brussel and return and Brussels to Cologne

The A6 is another road across higher up than A8 but it does have 2 lots of Roadworks..  Cannot understand why the A8 has so many roadworks as ithey started the three lane each way program 3 years ago and when we went down it last year that was all complete
nearly down to the Austrian border.

The will be more delays now with this last Munich Shooting and increased border controls.

You can see the roadworks on www.autobahn-online.de

We travelled from south of Stuttgart to the Moselle on Monday last (19 July).  The ongoing roadworks on the A8 north of the city added about 30 minutes to our journey - not fun.
