Legality of sat-nav systems in France

On page 42 of March 2012 issue I am told that “sat-nav systems that warn of fixed speed camera locations are now illegal to use in France.”

I am confused because an internet article on the subject states:

 

“There are two families of speed cameras detectors available:

  • Real radar detectors, forbidden by law in France

  • Radar warning systems, using a database of the location of the speed cameras
    coupled with
    a GPS    , allowed in France.”

 

 

Furthermore:

 

“Radar and laser detectors detect active(in-use) speed cameras. Advances in speed camera technology have superseded these systems and new digital speed cameras are invisible to radar and laser detectors. Such a device is not allowed in
France. Getting caught having such a device in your vehicle means a 1500 euro fine, device impounded (with the car if fixed to it).”

 

“A GPS speed camera detector – allowed in France, relies on a database of speed camera locations. (These) warn drivers of all known fixed and mobile speed cameras.”

 

This is an important issue and motorists need to know what the facts are without ambiguity. Can anyone throw definitive light on the situation?
