With reference to the OP, I doubt that we will ever be told why we've had so many outages in the last few days.

Now who's being a stupid boy? Wink Mind you, at the very least we should see Nick Lomas clad in sackcloth and traversing East Grinstead High Street

Did I imagine it or did the final "site down" message say something along the lines that the forum wouldn't be reopened until the proposed upgrades had been tested? So what, I wonder, do those upgrades actually comprise? Wink

A reasonable explaination would be welcome, not the bland responses we've been getting.

A forum is simply a web interface to a database - having run a few systems in my time I can say that it is easy for things to break unless you manage your database properly, and also don't apply system updates without testing first.

I'd suggest they start by taking a good look at their file structures and getting rid of commas in the resulting addresses:-

Every time I see that it gets my back up - or should that be backupWinking

You would think that at least one of the 40 IT staff that the CC are alleged to employ would have spotted that......

Don't think we will ever know the root cause of the problem as they are aware that there are at least half a dozen IT consultants and Forum owners who contribute on here.  So I guess they will continue to make the bland excuses so they don't have to admit
they have made basic errors.  Obviously the silence and bland statements are made so they don't look stupid and even more incompetent

Well, Malc, they've had a while to 'evaluate', so should know the cause...

if they dont, they shouldnt have released the forum again.....

once its proven to be (a little more) stable, perhaps they'll choose to enlighten us....

Personally, I can't understand this "demand" from a small number of members for a detailed explanation or "concise statement/update" from the club of the technical workings of and issues with their website.

If the website has issues - there are people in place to fix it.

If it's working, then as a customer I use it. If it isn't, I have alternatives.

If I go into a shop to buy a telly, I don't start asking where the components come from, how/where they were assembled, how it all works - I just want to buy and use a telly.

If my telly goes wrong, an engineer comes & fixes it.

I don't ask the engineer for a "concise statement/update" on what was wrong with my telly and details of what he has done to fix it!!

    Cheers

Write your comments here...Well I do ask what the problem was for 2 reasons, first to make sure I am not getting ripped off and secondly if the issue re-occurs I would have an idea what the problem was and if it were possible to fix it myself rather than
get an engineer out.  I am not saying we would be able to fix the CC website but as members who pay a fee I think we are entitled to a decent explanation in laymens terms what the problem was, how it was fixed and what we can expect in future i.e. was it a
permanent fix or a patch until a proper fix can be administered.

I agree MichaelT - a reasonable explanation in layman's terms is what most of us would expect.

I was making the point about the degree of explanation apparently being demanded by some members, which seems to go beyond that.

    Cheers

Why is so many people becoming so animated because a forum has intermittant faults. Either put up with them until they are fixed or use an alternative forum.-- The CC IT dept have been working to fix the problems on what is by now an outdated and antiquated forum. I dont envy them their task. But thats the way it is.

There has been promised, a completely new forum which will run perfectly, so until that happens each poster has 2 alternatives Stay or Go Elsewhere --- It really is as simple as that.

    Cool

Where does it say don't ask questions?

That was a specific comment on the (in my view unnecessary) degree of technical information that a small number of members seem to be demanding.

I don't think anyone is expecting a line by line explanation but something along the lines of " a conflict in the underlying page code caused the server to crash corrupting the CT database which took 'x' days to repair".

An estimate of when the new forum is to be implemented would also be welcome as it is now two months past the original promised date.

Is it, as many of us suspect, that they really haven't a clue and are stumbling along from one digital crisis to another?
