First timetowing and holidaying in europe

The wife and I would like to visit Switzerland and France, however never been abroad towing before. We were wondering how people got on on their first trips over the water, given we dont speak much more then elemantary french and understand less when spoken
to! WE would love to hear about good places to stay and be understood. many thanks
