Roadside overnight halts between Caen and Le mans
We've arrived in France a number of times off the evening ferry from Portsmouth at Oiustreham and previously stopped almost straight away (at the site over Pegasus Bridge). However, I have always want “to make a bit of progress south” as soon as I
get off the ferry and have often wondered what the availability of overnight halts is between Caen and Le Mans. In the good old days of the 80’s and 90’s we could always drop into a L’Aire but have been warned off this having travelled the Calais – Orange
route south and heard at first-hand how dangerous that has become.
Does anyone know if the Caen rote south is plagued with the same problem and / or recommend a safe halt point that will be open to arrivals up to 11:30 at night?

We have used that ferry route and timing for the last two years on our way to Eymet, near Bergerac.
We stop at Aire Pays d'Argentan about 1 - 1.5 hours south from Ouistreham just off the A83. I know and accept that many do not recommend stopping at motorway aires but this one is very quiet and is very well lit at night.
We will be stopping again at the end of August this year.

Sorry just spotted your reply - its just what I wanted to know - We're off to near Bergerac too! Let's hope the weather stays the same. I was a V70 man too (had 8 850/V70's! Magic)

I've posted a reply on your other thread but will repeat it here:
The Municipal Campsites website is a very useful one for finding overnight sites in towns and villages along your planned routes and covers
all regions of France. The link will take you to the Pays de la Loire and covers the Le Mans area.0 -

If you're looking for another stopover after Aire de Pays d'Aregentan (on the way to Bergerac) I would suggect Camping Municipal le Champion at Mansle. This is a typical munipal and has good sanitary facilities. It is easily accessed just off the N10. There
is a cafe alongside the entrance and several rstaurants a few minutes walk away and there is a Super U a few minutes drive in the town for fuel and supplies - but do not try this with your caravan hitched. Access is fine for car only but definitely not when
hitched.0
