What can I expect from european sites

I must admit, my preference is for the more spacious campsite, I do not like to feel like a sardine. From a few comments I have come across there is a less regimented approach abroad and sometime somewhat cramped.

Can I avoid this, and what should I look for when booking. Our hope is to spend late spring to early autumn on a lengthy trip. We have not decided where, but welcome suggestions for a first venture abroad.
