We have used Englethwaite Hall regularly and it seems to be well used as was North Yorkshire Moors when we were there. Possibly the location is also as important and they can survive in the right place. Those two are reasonably further from other club sites though and Englethwaite Hall is a good overnight stop which might help given the lower cost.

The club hasn't opened a non facility site in such a long time that I doubt the thought of opening a new one would even cross their minds . Yet in the right area and with the right pricing structure there really shouldn't be any reason why it shouldn't make a profit. Metered electricity, H/S with some serviced pitches, ANPR etc. The fact that we still have a fair percentage of the membership using non facility sites such as CLs, CSs, Rallies and THS sites shows that there will be a need for it if, and it's a big if, they placed it in the right spot. I know, I know, I really should take more water with it but one lives in hope.
Whenever we've stayed at Borrowdale, Englethwaite Hall or Thetford the occupancy rate has been high with Borrowdale always being full. This could be that Borrowdale has immediate access to walking opportunities, access to public transport on both buses and ferry and in a popular holiday area and is well used by Motorhomers as well as traditional caravaners.
Even when we had a caravan there would be times where we would choose a site, be it full facility site or a basic CL, where we could leave the car for 3 or 4 days and just use bikes or walk. Wirral CP site and the aforementioned Borrowdale spring to mind as does numerous CLs in Derbyshire so we would happily do the same with our new PVC. We don't even mind having to use it to go out of site if necessary and return later. It's not the end of the world to put a few things away. Some posts make it sound like its one or the other.

This is such a shame. As someone who lived in Rosedale and went to school in the hall next to the Church, I have returned there with my caravan… but stayed at the commercial site off Milk Street because it had facilities.
Rosedale has minimal facilities and was more of an unsupported CL. Why oh why did the C&MC not invest in developing this site … which is in a landscape of outstanding natural beauty?

@JimWatson the club did put some hardstandings in a few years ago, but it’s a different touring World now. Lots want easy access, lots of facilities and not having to drive out every day. Sad, but there it is.

The competition at Rosedale was too strong. With a big, well equipped, well financed commercial site so close by the Club was entirely sensible in closing its own small site. It would have been money down the drain to try to take the other site on head to head.

I think there is a place for these low facility sites in the right place although I do agree the club are unlikely to look at a new one unless it is bought as a going concern and has proved popular.
The ones that have closed do not seem to have been in locations that are easy to get at and attractive enough to attract enough people. Certainly Low Moor and Englethwaite Hall are better placed and are popular enough to survive so far. We also used Boughton on the Water some years back and that was near full.

I’m saddened by the loss of Rosedale, the area had so much to offer, numerous walks directly out from site and pubs and tearooms minutes away on foot. The ‘big’ site opposite came up for sale only a few years back and I wondered at the time that if the club did not buy this then the days of the club site were limited. As for access into the village, the other site seems to attract folk and really, the drive isn’t that bad, certainly better than some I’ve visited and enjoyed around the UK. Sometimes I think it is us posting our own thoughts and concerns on social media that can contribute to the demise of some sites. That drive in wasn’t the nightmare some suggested, yes you needed to be a competent and confident driver and choose the route in wisely but doesn’t that go for anyone driving on our roads today.

The word on the street is that the Rosedale site is not closed but is open with other owners instead of this Club. I haven’t checked but someone else will doubtless do. And of course Brookfield Farm and Marazion sites are certainly open with new owners too. There is life beyond CAMC

That’s interesting to know, and good news. It’s an interesting location for those who enjoy peace and quiet and some good walking. Some of these very nice former little sites are having an interesting renaissance. We hope to go back to the old Threeways location at some point, it was always a favourite with us.

Tda have you seen @peedee post about the resurrection of the Marazion site? Look well worth a visit.

yes had a look thanks Nellie. We love this location. I think the campsite which was up the road, the one that did air for divers has long gone, and our favourite CL at Kestal Farm is no more sadly, so sites near St Hilary are few and far between now. We would have a look at the half dozen pitches at Wheal Rodney as well, closer to Marazion, as we used to use the swim pool and laundry.
