Dennis Law RIP

Former Scotland, Manchester United and Manchester City striker Denis Law - the only Scottish player to have won the Ballon d'Or - has died at the age of 84.
The man dubbed 'The King' and 'The Lawman' spent 11 years at Old Trafford, his 237 goals in 404 appearances placing him third in United's history behind Wayne Rooney and Bobby Charlton. His 30 goals making him Scotland's joint top scorer of all time. He was sold for a British record fee three times during his career.
In 2021, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia.
What a player!! One of the all time greats.
RIP Dennis

Back in the early 70's Rovers were drawn against United in what was then called the "League Cup". I travelled back from uni in York to watch the game (still at Eastville then alongside the gas holders!). My biggest regret was that all the stars were playing apart from The King who was my boyhood favourite. Rovers led for much of the game but drew 1-1 thanks to a late Utd equaliser. Sadly, couldn't make the replay at Old Trafford where we won 2-1 and our goalie, Dick Shepherd, saved a George Best penalty! Great days, but sadly never did get to see Denis play live.
A sad loss. Denis Law RIP.

I was deemed too young to be taken to a First Division match in the 1960’s early 70’s so I never got to see him live. Dad followed Leeds United, so the Roses derby game was always feisty, both on and off the pitch. He did fetch me match programmes though, and I was a huge Man Utd fan, mainly because they had Georgie Best. But what a team they were, with Law, Best and Charlton. So sad to hear about his last years, far too many of the players of this era have had Dementia.
