What are you all up to

I spoke too soon yesterday evening as OH had to retire early to bed, feeling the effects of her injections. Thankfully she is much improved this evening. DcIt has been a dull day here with some rain in the afternoon and then again tonight. I was able to get the inside of the caravan hoovered out before lunch and the car cleaned after lunch just before the rain came.
Sounds like a successful day's shopping with your MIL, WN, and we chuckled at her wearing the hi-viz vest. Hope Mrs WN is soon feeling much better.
EJuly your trips away OP and that the winds are not too fierce on Sunday.

Well today could not have been any better for October, on the beach it was 18 degs, warmer than some days in August, should have taken the plunge into the Solent, one of Michael Mosley's must do daily routines is to plunge yourself into cold water, i have been turning the shower to cold each morning and standing there for 30 seconds this morning it was probably colder than the Solent, but i think it is all change for tomorrow, but next week not looking too bad

Had fun and games yesterday. Kitchen fitter came to install a new integrated larder fridge because our present one was on it's way out. Took the old one out and discovered that the builders (when we did the re-build 12 years ago) had hard-wired it into a junction box. Explained that if he chopped the plug off the new one and did as they had done, it would void the warranty - so he had to fit a 13A socket in place of the junction box.
Went to consumer unit and rather than turn all the power off, I thought I would be clever and just turn off both the circuit breakers marked "sockets". To cut a long story short - when he had finished - one of them wouldn't go back on - indicating a fault. Checked around the house and what I found was weird. All sockets off downstairs apart from the kitchen. All off upstairs, apart from one in my study. No phone, no internet, none of the TVs worked so it looked like being a miserable weekend. Must have tried to flick the breaker on at least a dozen times as I methodically went from room to room switching sockets off and on to try to locate the offending item.
Rang my neighbour at work and although he's now a project manager for a big construction company - is a qualified electrician.
He came round straight after work - went to consumer unit - flicked the breaker on - and it stayed there!! However, he did find another one that was faulty and replaced it, but we were both baffled as to what had happened.
It's nice to have such lovely neighbours

Tonight is the start of our Autumn/Winter run of nights out. All to local (and localish) gigs.
Tonight it's Steve Knightley (ex Show of Hands) at Kendal Brewery Arts Centre. Then in 4 weeks, the timing ramps up to at least one a week.
To give an insight into my taste - these are on the schedule.
Bellowhead, Oysterband, Blackbeards Tea Party, Eliza Carthy, The Young 'Uns, Merry Hell, Martyn Joseph, Spiers & Boden.
It makes the bad times better.

Our house is North facing at the front and therefore South facing at the back but because the trees in the wood are so high we get no sun at this time of year, so we haven’t seen much of the lovely weather today. I cut the back grass for what I hope will be the last time this year but it is very wet under foot out there.
Our daughter went to the caravan as she and two of our granddaughters are going to a show in Birmingham tonight. Then this morning our site contacted the owners to say the river is rising very quickly and if the prediction is right the site will flood and close tonight, well that was out of the blue as weather not bad there. Total panic as they would have nowhere to go on arriving back from Birmingham. When we finally managed to contact them, phone reception isn’t very good, she said that it was ok cos they’d decided to stay over in Birmingham and had booked a room. That was a relief. Think it is time we went to shut it down for winter.

you could fit her with one of those trackers you can buy for your dog that works with an App
Rufs, I was thinking more along the lines of an ankle bracelet but the police were reluctant to give me one. Have to keep tabs on her as she has no sense of direction. She could get lost in a telephone box.
Happy to say that OH finally stopped "swinging the lead" today and is all clear. Lovely day up here so plenty of fresh air. Had to go to town as I needed to send a birthday card to my brother in France. This time last last year we spent some time over there with him but no chance this year.
Hope the Avon doesn't flood too much for you DEBSC. Saw our water flood people checking out the local river in town today. They seemed satisfied but it was quite high.
Hope Mrs Nellie is feeling better today.
That's certainly an eclectic list Goldie.

Glad to hear that OH is clear of the virus, WN. Thankfully Mrs nth has also got over the effects of her injections.
Goldie, enjoy all your concerts. I have been listening to Show of Hands and The Young 'Uns this week while posting on here. I will have a dabble at the others that you are going to see.
Debs, hope that the rising water doesn't do any to your caravan.
Pleased that you managed to get things sorted out R&R, it was fortunate that you had a friendly electrician on hand to solve the problem.
It started off dull but dry this morning and by 11:00 the sun had come out and OH was able to get the washing dry outside. I loaded some more bits into the caravan in the morning and washed the outsides in the afternoon, between walks with and without Flyte.

The saga of our water smart meter seems, at long last, to have been resolved. Just a recap:- it was installed on 9th July but it started to leak and the pavement outside our house had to be dug up. Then they thought they could smell gas, so the gas board dug an even bigger hole! Both issues resolved and pavement reinstated. Trouble was this coincided with our annual water bill which they had to estimate and as a result our monthly payments doubled. Anyway today received an email saying the smart meter had been activated and a new bill attached. It seems as I have paid too much into the account they have reduced our monthly payments to zero until the next bill. Be interested to see how that works out!!!

A wet and windy start to the day, so the first two and a half walks were in the rain. By 11:00 it had turned dry and we were able to get most of the remaining items into the caravan. The sun came out around lunchtime and continued all afternoon, however the wind did increase in strength, although it seems to have died down somewhat now. Just hope it is not too strong tomorrow when we set off on our next trip, to Yorkshire this time.

Let us know if you get close Nellie👍

Welcome back, and will do..... In fact the furthest south we will get this trip will be near Pickering in a week's time.

Something of a milestone today as the first train to run from Oxford to Milton Keynes completed the journey today, sixty years since passenger trains last used this route. Although of course sixty years ago they wouldn't have got as far as Milton Keynes because there was no station. It was just a test train as passenger services between Milton Keynes and Oxford don't start until next year. Its all part of the East West Rail restoration between Oxford and Cambridge, the Varsity Line as it used to be called. It will be quite a few more years before they extend the line to Cambridge as I am not even sure they have decided on the route of the line yet?

A mixed start to the day, although we were able to finish the loading of the caravan, hitched up and getting away in the dry, we did have a couple of showers which delayed our departure. It was a pleasant and interesting drive to the site, as we have never used the route from Ingleton to Hawes in that direction as it looked very different going that way instead of the reverse. Now on a new CL, to us, not far from Bedale, which only opened in July last year. Most impressed with the facilities, large H/S pitches and a very smart set of utilities, nice open views and an easy access.

In view of the lovely weather we are having here at the moment, I bit the bullet today and got stuck into the one caravanning job I loathe - cleaning the roof! With all the rain of previous weeks, it was almost as green as the lawn!! Much to my surprise, it came off quite easily although I have to say that the little electric re-chargeable rotary brush that DSB recommended last year was of great assistance in the stubborn areas.
At least it shouldn't get too bad over the winter, now.
A 'tip' day tomorrow to get rid of all the packaging from the new fridge plus 4 old toilet seats. Isn't life exciting?

Richard - "4 old toilet seats?" What was it? A BOGOF or maybe an "Off-Bog?"
Quiet morning stroll around a local nature reserve this morning, trying to get some equilibrium back into our life. Lovely day for it and it did the trick. MiL had a craft class this afternoon so we were able to tarry. She gets picked up and delivered back home.
Rearranged dental appointment tomorrow followed by a lunch date with my cousin and her OH. Should be fun, the lunch that is, as we always have a laugh.

Another fine day so we had a walk around Bedale in the morning along by the river then after a look at the limited market continued with a stroll around the park. Drove onto the interesting Thornton Stewart after lunch were we visit the village church St Oswolds, which lies about 1/2 ml down a wooded lane, well away from all the village properties, and is the oldest chuch in Wensleydale, parts dating from Norman period. In the middle of the village is Fort Horn which was apparently constructed as an armoury and store room for the corps of volunteers ‘during the troublous times of the French war’. No doubt the upper room would also have been an observation post, with watchers ready to the raise the alarm if Napoleon’s army was spotted marching into Masham. After hostilities ended in 1815 Fort Horn was converted into a dwelling. But with its martial name and bold crenellations it continues to commemorate George Horn’s patriotic gesture of raising volunteers and building the fort.

Looks interesting Nellie👍
Lovely weather here today as well, so a couple of hours logging, and in garden this morning, then vets for a check up, and sort out next six months meds. Little drive out to a lovely local garden centre for a coffee.
Glad you have had a more normal day WN, good to get rid of the COVID.

Just another day at the office, and we are supposed to have something similar for the next 10 days.
Was surprised today at just how few folk there were out and about, several swimming and a party in the beach side sauna, but no queues at the ice cream van

Had a full day but not overly taxing. Dentist visit to Chester, which was remarkably quiet, then as OH was with me I was forced into M&S to buy some new trousers. I was told that 2 pairs at home were about to be binned. So I was blind-sided.
Had a lovely lunch date with cousin and her OH. We all felt better for it as they've not long recovered from Covid, plus we all enjoyed the meal itself. Best of all was a saving of nearly £50 off the meal as the pub group hand out vouchers during the year and we both had enough to help with the bill.
Then home and a first chat with our new neighbours. They're busy knocking seven bells out of the house and garden. Good luck to them.

Sounds like a successful day out, WN, glad to read that things are getting back to normal. Guess you are relieved that next door now has new residents.
The morning started off rather foggy and it wasn't until after 11:00 before it cleared and the sun came out, and by that time we were at Kipling Hall. We had a walk around the grounds, with the intention of circling the lake but had to reverse our route due to a flooded path, so split the walk into two parts. After lunch we visited the House where there were some very well informed volunteer room stewards, so we learnt a lot about the history of the 4 separate families that have owned the property since it was first built around 1625. Stopped off in Catterick Garrison for some shopping on the way back to the van.

Lovely photos nellie. You are visiting some very interesting places.
WN I am pleased to hear that you and Mrs WN are feeling better and your life is getting back to normal. It sounds as though you had a lovely meet up with your cousin.
It has been an 'interesting' few days here. We had a Ring doorbell fitted at the weekend as there have been one or two 'incidents' recently in our area. Daughter and SIL came to fit it for us. The physical fitting was a doddle but connecting it to the WiFi was complicated (well for me anyway!). We had also bought a small Alexa screen so when I am out with my phone OH can still see who is at the door. Daughter was really helpful setting it all up. OH has discovered the joys of having an Alexa and keeps asking her to play Dave Brubeck (he is a fan). Then on Sunday our front door lock, which has been 'iffy' for a while, decided to give up completely and locked us in the house. We had to go out via the conservatory and the back gate. We rang our handy handyman on Monday morning and although he had another job booked he came straight round and dismantled the lock and let us out of the house. We now have a new door lock. We then had to have extra keys cut for our children at Timpsons - I hadn't realised how expensive they are - £10 each! I went to Specsavers yesterday to collect my new glasses - more expense.
Very pleasant weather here this week, quite mild and sunny some of the time. Long may it last.

We visited Kipling Hall a couple of years ago Nellie, an enjoyable visit from memory and, as you say, the room stewards were great and one particularly was ‘interestingly different’ and very knowledgeable. You are in a lovely area with lots to see. Enjoy.
Glad you were able to get out of your house eventually Milliehull. Like you we have had a busy and expensive time of it lately…. needed a new fridge/freezer as ours gave up, OH had new glasses, and we had a new rear garage door fitted, all this along with decorating the study which is still ongoing. We will be glad to get away soon as we have booked a cottage in the Lake District.
Talking of Alexa she can surprise you at times by suddenly speaking and asking a random question about whether or not we would like this book? Also we’ve had ‘sorry I don’t know that’ even though we hadn’t asked her anything. It can be a bit weird!!! 😂Pleased to hear you are both recovered from Covid WN.

heddlo I am told that Alexa goes into overdrive if you order anything from Amazon with numerous messages and updates!
1 -
We too get the odd message from Alexa although we never actually use her "services "!!
Thanks Millie, I try to include something interesting from our visits. Glad to hear that you got the lock fixed, I dread to think what would happen shoud ours give up the ghost when we are out as access into the house otherwise would be a major problem. We would probably have to camp out in the caravan until we could find a locksmith with time to sort it out.
Visited another St Oswolds Church this morning, this one at East Huxwell, followed by a walk through Huxwell Manor estate where there were some beautiful autumn colours. Then onto Temple Steward Resevoir for lunch and a circuit of the res. It has been dry again although the sun didn't appear until around 12:00, but it has been warm.
