Hi All,

Not been a good weekend.....

At 0145 Sunday morning we suffered the above incident, fortunately or 'not', our wheel clamp did it's job....

We park it 'nose in' on our drive so habitation door faces our house as I considered this the 'weakest' entry point.... they entered via the drivers door, no alarm went off but my wife heard it start up & then the crunch as the wheel clamp is on passenger side....

As ignition barrel was damaged I couldn't switch engine off, couldn't stall it as wheel lock was 'wedged' & it's Comfortmatic..... neighbors must've loved me as it was running on drive for 4 hours until breakdown arrived, then went through another process last night getting it off my drive at 2300 with no way of driving it off.....

Police have said there has been a spate (20) of larger SUV type & leisure vehicle thefts in the last 2 weeks in the Cambs, Beds & Hertfordshire areas....

I was looking to sell by next Spring & this has probably tipped me over that edge!

Stay safe & be aware.

Hard luck, Kasspa. I hope it all comes good for you once your insurance company sorts things out.

    Thank you TW & TDA.

I'm with Aviva through Comfort Insurance so am hopeful that it will be a smooth 'ish' process although I've been told when reporting it that it is currently a 'fault' claim despite my additional security measure preventing the theft!!!

My line of thought is that there are insurance companies out there who state that if you are hit by an 'uninsured' driver you won't lose your NCB & I would consider this to be of a similar category....

If the insurance companies want to claim from anyone it should be Google who give the intel to the criminal fraternity!

Sorry to hear of your problem.

I am afraid that as far as insurance is concerned it is a no claim bonus and not a no fault one. Frankly the use of fault in these circumstances is wrong, what insurers mean is it is a claim where they are unable to recover their payment. This will apply to all theft or attempted theft claims, so there is no chance of keeping the bonus unless you added the voluntary bonus cover, if it was offered to you.

The uninsured driver bit seems to have been the result of one insurer offering this extra cover to attract business and the others then had to follow. It is though a one off benefit on most policies, although there is no logical reason for it.

Thanks Wildwood, it was explained to me today that there is 'criteria' for this uninsured driver promise.....

You have to have obtained name & address of the culprit so as you have said it is a channel from which the insurers can attempt to recover their losses.....

A neighbour of mine had his car broken into some years back where the culprit was identified & caught. He was charged with 5 other offences & fined a total of £140 surprised....

    So much for recovering costs!!!

From dealing with the claims I think the idea of recovering from the driver is not realistic, to put it mildly. I cannot think of a single case we managed that. If you are not insured, it is usually because you are short of money. The others are generally very elusive.
