Avtex Tourer Two Sat Nav GPS - Problem

Hi all,

I just purchased the above through the club shop and it doesn't appear to be working correctly.

I punch in the route etc. but the screen doesn't centralise my route. I've selected auto Zoom and Track up as the Map View but the route is allowed to go off the screen and when I got to my distination although the spoken directions were correct the car wasn't on the screen at all - it was as if the GPS thinks it's somewhere else.

Am I missing something or do I have a faulty unit?

Thanks

Mark

Was it only when you got to your destination that this occurred or was it over the whole route? If it was just at the destination it could be the place you were stopped at was not on the map so it automatically locks on to the nearest road???

You might want to check it has the latest software update. I found the best way to do this is to download Garmin express on your PC, plug in your satnav & follow the on-screen instructions. Be warned it does take a while unless you’ve really fast broadband.

Re Avtex satnav powered by Garmin. I have Avtex satnav and it keeps giving me the message on start up "maps are corrupt do not use contact Garmin Express". Garmin advised doing a full up date of software and maps (although the device itself seemed to be fully up dated). None of the suggestions from Garmin worked, so they have referred me to Avtex to get things sorted, suggesting that there is a manufacturing problem within the device itself and that it should be replaced by Avtex. It is just out of Warranty.

My old TomTom was never a problem, but the 'premium' Avtex seems not to be up to much. I now await response from Avtex - fingers crossed !.

At least with Tom Tom the worst I have ever suffered is 'your destination is on the left', whereas it was in fact on the right!

Our old CMC Snooper is great.

Driving along then suddenly pinging showing us driving in the fields along side the road. Even on the motorway!

I dont I may add try to follow that particualt directionof the arrow.

I think most of there 'specialised' sat navs have problems.

Our Avtex tourer 2 has given us lots of problems on a recent trip to Belgium and The Netherlands.  Had switched it on at home so that it could find satellites on the move, but did not need to follow the route suggested.

On crossing the Channel I changed the name of the country before trying to get name of town.  The screen would only show the letter R highlighted and I could not start the name of any other town. On pressing the letter R the only town to show up was Rotterdam, which we did not want.  Even then it would show that it was calculating then stop at 80% and refuse to even refresh the screen.

Asked people more experienced and better qualified to answer our questions and they attempted to work the satnav but found it to be as we'd said - totally focused on Rotterdam only!

Gave up completely and navigated the old fashioned way with a Europe Atlas then a large fold out map of The Netherlands

Back home now and any advice would be welcome.

We have just bought a second hand one series device and had an issue the other day:
We have updated the maps etc, so all is up to date. I set the route and we went on our way. In the background I also had Waze on for the traffic.
Luckily we roughly knew our route anyway, but as we were in our motorhome we were interested in what route it would take us. At a junction it told us to turn left when Waze was saying right. I thought it should be right, but trusted Avtex and turned left. It then took us on a complete circle, all around the new forest and back to the junction?? It was then telling us to turn left again!
Plus I've noticed the maps are not as detailed on the actual campsite, where as Waze was.

Think we will bin it and get a Tomtom

I bought the Two version only a few weeks before the Three version was released.

Today I was driving back from Keswick to home which is just off the A1/M62 and programed the sat nav.

It took me along the A66 as would be expected however reaching the M6 it then directed me to go north onto the motorway towards Carlisle.

I ignored it and carried on the A66 to the A1.

I have no idea why it would try to send me on what would have been extra miles and time on the journey.

The route is as simple as could be A66>A1.

I only used the sat nav incase of any road diversions which we encountered on the way up there the perevious 10 days before.

You’ve possibly got it set to use major roads and the motorway is more major than the A roads🤷🏻‍♂️

We’ve come across this sort of thing  occasionally with various Sat nav’s we have owned. Caused by a very small chunk of data missing. In this case it would be the bit across the M6 in an easterly direction. Years ago the Sat Nav told me there were no routes from where we were to Durness. Once we were north of the bit of missing data, which was just north of Lairg,  it resumed the route.

My old Snooper (again C&M club edition) told me to leave the A1 northbound and go up onto the M18 roundabout and then back down the other side to join the A1 northbound.

Hi all,  I'm having trouble updating the maps on the Avtex Tourer Two I bought 4 years ago as it was recommended by CAMC.

When I tried to update the maps it said "There is not enough space on the device to install updates. Use the Garmin Express application to update device.

My computer is an Apple Mac running macOS Catalina version 10.15.7.  When I try to run Garmin Express on it it tells me

You can't use this version of the application "Garmin Express" with this version of macOS.

You have macOS 10.15.7.   The application requires macOS 11.0 or later.

It was suggested I insert a micro SD card into the Avtex sat nav, which I did. 32GB formatted to FAT32 as suggested.

This makes no difference. Still not enough memory. It only needs 14GB and I;ve given it 32 GB . I can't even be sure if the sat nav is recognising the SD card. There's nothing in the settings to say it has the additional memory.

Surely I don't have to go out and buy another sat nav because this is obsolete already. My Apple Mac runs perfectly well and I don't want to replace that.

Its a bit naughty of Garmin to stop supporting their Garmin Express app on Macs too. Do they favour Microsoft?

Are you still getting updates for your Mac or is it too old now? The problem with not updating is that your security becomes out of date apart from the rest of the software.

Another sat nav is likely to have the same issues unless you can find a different version of Garmin Express or update/upgrade your Mac.

Yes, it’s all a big scam to make you spend money on new gear.

I'd be thinking along the lines of Tinwheeler. How old is the Mac? Whilst folk swear by them I've always been put off by the price, especially as you can get a Windows or Chrome laptop with more than enough performance for £400. I'm getting about 8 years out of my laptops, so that is not bad value. My current Dell is running Windows 10 and I'd thought about a Chromebook or a cheaper Mac but they do not make it easy to store music etc.

With the Avtex/Garmin I'm using a series 1 that I bought second hand about 7 or 8 years ago and I've needed to add a memory card a few years ago. It is not perfect, but makes less mistakes than I do and I really like the POI database of campsites.

It does have a wobbly occasionally when it comes to updates and despite it being able to to so without being attached to the computer I find it more reliable to do so. The battery is also now not holding a lot of charge and I'll have to replace that.

No mapping is perfect and any satnav system will have its blips. There may be just one small piece of data that is incorrect/missing in a 100 mile trip and it will send you off on a wild goose chase.

Sytems also interpret the mapping data in a different way. I believe Waze uses Google Maps, but the two side by side can give a different route. I recently discovered Waze when we were faced with a month long road closure in Devon and I have to say I'm impressed with it. If we have not got the van on the back and we are uncertain my wife calls it up on her phone. I also like how I can link it to the car display in my Audi.

This is getting off topic but I hesitated for ages - too long - over getting a Mac, EM. Eventually, Microsoft backtracking over W10 being their last ever OS and rendering my laptop unsuitable for upgrades made me jump ship. I bought a Mini-Mac at a bargain price during a Prime event and matched it with compatible (non-Apple)monitor, mouse, hub and keyboard. It wasn’t much dearer than any other desktop PC. Best move I made.

With regards to 685, I feel it’s more of a Mac issue and another sat nav will have the same issues.

The last update for Catalina was a security update in July 2022. The last Safari update for Catalina was Safari 15.6.1 issued in August 2022. Catalina (v10) was released in Oct 2019 and replaced by Big Sur (v11) in Nov 2020. In computer terms that is geriatric. We are now on v15. Security requirements cause underlying changes that make it difficult for software suppliers, such as Garmin, to keep supporting older Macos, and Windows as they update their own software to work with the latest versions.

I am with Tinwheeler above. If you want to stick with Apple, get the latest you can. Try not to go below Macos 13 (Ventura).

It is possible to force later versions into a Mac, I have a macbook pro from 2012 running the latest version, but it takes a bit of dedication, and definitely not the main computer. It feels like computing on a tightrope, but the challenge is my thing.
