Rowena, if CAMC offered a discount on the cottage rental prices, I’d probably still be a member but they don’t and the not very favourable Welcome Cottages T&Cs apply which is a double whammy.

I assume that if you are a retiring touring CMC member you may as well keep your existing membership as it seems to offer the same benefits? The Club are obviously trying to tap into the growing (?) Glamping market and expand that side of the Club? Having read TDA's posts about meeting up with friends who made use of Experience Freedom accommodation I thought I would take a look. To me what is on offer is still a bit too basic, I think I would prefer a proper fixed bed, in a separate bedroom. I certainly wouldn't dismiss the idea of making use of the Club offer in the future but I will probably wait to see how it develops.

I notice Lady Margaret is to be expanded and is to include a glamping village. There is a web page about 2024 developments but it is currently elluding me so I cannot provide a link. The Club seems to have buried it nicely somewhere, a search on developments brings up every year but 2024!

P.S. Google came up trumps even if the Clubs search pages didn't. You can read about it >here<. Nothing about Godrevy!

    Thanks Peedee

Interesting reading about Lady Margaret's Park and provision for cabins with separate bedrooms which might answer my point raised above about a bit more luxury? Not sure I approve of wood burning stoves as I thought we were trying to clean the air rather than pollute it?

P.S. very small print, I'll never see that on a tablet or phone.

I know two mums who live in terraced streets in London. They take two 11 year olds away when they can so that they can experience freedom.

You know the sort of thing - riding bikes on forest tracks, collecting fallen wood for fires or heating the outdoor hot tub, flying kites, looking for frogspawn,  chasing around, and so on.

Should I tell them that if they paid £63 (is that each?) they could take the kids to a sedate, well behaved Club site instead?,

What does this Club know about freedom?

Our friends use them because they have very special and specific needs, and two nights not too far from home, utilising something that allows them to stay with family and friends who use their own outfits is all they can now enjoy. They have kept their existing Membership of Club, so have always got the discount, and news of the special offers.
If all you need is a sleeping base, and come from a “compromise and get the most out of things” background, then they are if you like static tourers. Similar size, similar ingenious squeezing of required essential bits of kit into a small space, but without the hooking up to anything. In the hierarchy of touring (I use the word loosely) they are at the apex of easy, don’t have to do much, don’t require much mobility or strength or effort to have a nice stay, so camp> caravan>service pitch>glamping pod. Most effort required is getting your luggage from car park to your pod. Our friends would be delighted if they could still do all the things we used to do, but they can’t. As it is, they can still stay with their family who caravan, with us, and get some real bargains.

As for adventure, they once drove across the Sahara desert in their LR, they were ex Off road British Champions, holidayed with a family Member in Ramallah who worked for the Palestinian Health Authority, dragged off an El Al flight for forgetting to take a tiny Swiss Army Knife out of a pocket, and long served in a Dales Mountain Rescue team. Cave diving (you have to have a screw loose😱) was relaxation. But ill health and old age takes no prisoners, and you compromise and keep going.

The Club’s Experience Freedom provision is what it is. Nice, easy, no less or more adventurous to a certain extent then rolling up with your own outfit and using a pitch. Personally, like a lot of this kind of provision, we think they are expensive per night, and would prefer a cottage, but then all the Club’s provision might be considered on the expensive side. Wait for the special offers and they are in fact better value than a pitch.

Early on in the club glamming experience there were a few incidents of groups booking them and using them as a party base, not understanding anything about MOST camp sites , not just CAMC, that there is quiet from 11 pm. Has that been dealt with, does anyone know, with appropriate booking requirements, t & c, and instructions to wardens.

Cayton Bay was very quiet when we were there (apart from us🤣) The worst noise we encountered was a TV on too loud in a caravan, and the 7am building works adjacent to the site. Mind, it was November, and there was 100 metres between each of the dozen or so outfits on the site……

At least this was not done by changing all the signage (again) to something like "The Caravan and Motorhome and Neither Club".

Not sure if any of you are watching the Robson Green series on BBC 2 called Robson Green's Weekend Escapes? I am not so keen on the second series but he does seem to end up at a lot of "Glamping Sites" for his accommodation. I hadn't realised that it seems to be a big business. I think it makes sense for the Club to diversify into this type of thing. From what I have seen so far it doesn't seem to imping on the touring side. The trouble is none of us know how our hobby will develop and change over the next ten to twenty years and perhaps by then pure touring with conventional campsites will be changed out of all recognition?

Quiet time on our sites is from 22.00 Hja. I don't need instruction from anyone to deal with unnecessary noise after that time from whoever it may be. Experience gives you that feeling for late night party people be they campers or glampers when they arrive.

Not looked at the t's & c's but who does?!

Glamping isn't that new now David but it's certainly big business. The majority of EF accommodation on our sites uses land that would be unsuitable for van pitches, or where the maximum pitch allocation has already been met so why not utilise that. As you say we don't know what the future holds with vanning in general but I'm guessing in 20 years campsites as we know them won't be there (most of us probably won't be anywayyell). It will be glamping pods and charging points and a central bbq/ social area, just like they do over there.

Agree with JK, glamping and alternative accommodation has been around for quite a while now, and was given a huge boost by COVID and lots of folks wanting to look after themselves in different types of units, but without committing huge outlay on a van or MH.

We used to use Forestry Commission Sites like Beddgelert and Cropton Forest in the late 1990’s, early 2000’s, they opted to move over to less basic pitches due in part to the very boggy ground at times, and anyone who uses CLs, CS and small independent sites will be able to relate to just how many have added something other than just pitches to their portfolio’s.

Like it or not, the Club in this respect is merely moving with the times, and recognising that there is a lot of change going on. Airbnb is full of quirky glamping units, it’s very big business.

I wonder how many members realise the extent of what is in the "sitemap", as with most web sites it contains very limited information, most of it about the development of web site itself, or so I have found.

As far as I’ve seen, absolutely everything is in the Site Map, Nellie. There's so much there that, inevitably, it’s not always easy to find what you want.

The RG programme has highlighted some fabulous examples of really innovative glamping options. He was in a tree house in last night’s programme, a world away from Club type offerings. There’s a re purposed helicopter done out as a glamping unit somewhere on Airbnb, and we have seen some fantastic ex railway carriages.  We had a few days on a nice CL not far from Forde Abbey a few years ago, the owner there was busy building a couple of Shepherd’s Huts to put in his orchard.

    Cayton Bay has competition………https://www.pinewoodpark.co.uk/helicopter-glamping-breaks

    🤣🤣🤣 Fabulous👍

Did anyone see that guy on Dragons' Den who started a glamping business from his garden....?

he makes a huge profit, makes and manages the 'chalet/pods' himself, opened a couple of new parks and has full occupancy for the next 18 months (incl midweek, much to the surprise of Deborah Meaden).

She then asked about pricing and what premium for weekends....he replied that the prices were the same for every day of the year....👍👍👍👍

bit like another pricing policy close to my heart😉

glamping there seems to be very popular.

I quite agree, it is so unlike any other web site's sitemap that I have looked at. I wonder why HO  don't highlight it as the place to go for all round club information? Perhaps they only want the really dedicated followers of CT to have that info!wink
