France, Italy or Spain?

Planning our next trip back home to Switzerland. Looked at Ferry options to NL but probably doing the Tunnel again because of the dog. Thinking about venturing out a bit further, maybe have a few days in Italy, the South of France or even in Spain. Any thoughts/recommendations regarding routes and Campsites? Many thanks in advance

Spain is a bit of a diversion if you are going to Switzerland for that matter so is Italy! Your question is too broad to give answers.

Yes, it does seem a rather roundabout way to get to Switzerland via Italy or Spain. Perhaps a few more details of the reasoning behind such a plan would help. Would it only include northern Spain or northern Italy as this would, if anything, sound to be the most likely alternative, or are both countries in their entirety being considered?

We generally travel through Switzerland on our way to Spain or Italy, but then we live in Germany so it’s no detour for us.

Hi. Sorry, not enough information given. We live in the UK and have family in Switzerland. Normally we would go through the tunnel and take the most direct route to and from Switzerland. This time we would like to spend more time on the continent, maybe get some sun? So really asking for some recommendations regarding Campsites/nice places for a holiday in Spain, Italy or South of France. Many thanks in advance

You still don't say, for instance, how much time you have available or what limit you are setting yourself for total mileage of your trip, because that will determine how far into Spain or Italy you could go. If you were to decide to travel to a far corner of Spain, for example, it would mean a detour of about 2000 miles there and back!

More importantly what time of year? Many sites in the early part of the year are not open until well into May.

I could spend a fortnight going slowly from Calais to Switzerland - visiting  Troyes, Dijon, Besancon, the Jura region, and on towards Geneva.

And the website www.about-France.com has lots of ideas for slow travelling across France in other directions.

Anything up to a month possible (incl. a week in CH)… Planning to go in Spring, maybe May? Just looking for some sun and warmer temperatures. Dogfriendly a must🐾

Perhaps 4 days to travel to the Costa Brava or even as far south as Barcelona but assume you would not want to travel too far south so suggest stay a week in Roses at Camping Salata then make your way into Italy along the coast via Provence before finally cutting back into Switzlerland for a week with say the final 4 days to travel back to the UK? Some sites will be open on that route with the majority open mid May onwards. Use the ACSI discount scheme and the App Search4sites to find suitable sites for your taste

Thanks so much! I have never even heard of the ACSI scheme before, but will look into it now. Camping Salata looks nice👍

Camping Salata is a very well run site - we stay there most years on our way back from Valenciana, but it is getting a bit pricey.

There is a good Camperpark about 300m down the road from Salata Autocaravaning Park Roses.

We have stayed at Camping Rodas when in Roses it's good and in Acsi so prices is good.

Do you plan to go to Switzerland first then tour or the other way round.

If Switzerland first then I would use the tunnel with the dog or the short ferry P&O now have a dog lounge so your dog doesn't have to stay in the car. After Switzerland I would choose Italy but be aware at the end of May is a 2 week German holiday so will be busy.

If going to Switzerland last, then I probably would choose south of France and take my time working my way along it. Every area of it is different. Then go up by Provence and Annecy and into Switzerland from there.

Have a good trip it sounds lovely.

Sounds like a good opportunity to have a great trip.  Weather best is Spain in May pleasant in S of France and N Italy and getting hot by the end of May in all areas, so why not do that order - you have a month!  I would not bother to book for May just be aware of the German holiday in early May and avoid Italian lakes then.  Join ACSI (thro' Club Shop link at top of page)  and follow the sun.  Envious moi - not at all!!!!
