Hi, I am sure somebody has had experience of driving to Greece in a campervan. We are planning a trip in 2024, any advice and routes much appreciated.

Welcome to CT. I expect your thread will be moved to the overseas section where somebody is sure to be able to help.

    Welcome to CT.

You are correct in that many folk do drive to Greece.

If you 'do' Facebook I can suggest a group that I found very helpful.

Its called Motorhoming in Europe after Brexit. Don't let the name put you off its very helpful and informative. Lots of those that post are full timers or at the very least long term travellers. They travel as far as Turkey and Morocco and are a wealth of tips including ferry crossings from Italy, Croatia and Albania.

Check them out you won't be disappointed.

I bookmarked this site after reading some years ago from a caravaner that did the trip. I recall that you "camp out" on the ships deck after hooking up the vans or motorhomes electrics.

There are blogs on line by masochists who have driven all the way via Balkan countries such as Bosnia, Serbia and North Macedonia, but there are also ferries from four ports in Italy (Venice, Ancona, Bari and Brindisi) to the Greek mainland. What do you have in mind.?

    Hi Van Life

We did Greece in 2019 I was still working at the time so could only do 4 weeks, we crossed via Hull/Rotterdam (Europort) through Germany/Switzerland/Italy sailed from Ancona to Patras toured the Peloponnese crossed the Corinth canal and up to Delphi and returned to Italy via Igoumenitsa all very easy. We booked our Italy/Greece ferry with via mare on the phone they are very helpful if you book early enough you can camp onboard great fun. sorry I can't remember the camp sites but all the sites we stopped at in Greece were excellent, just go for it you will have a great time

    Cheers

It's very popular now to do the drive there, going through all the countries you mentioned and more.

Those who have no time restraints can take months to do it, while those that have the 90 maximum will either drive out and ferry back or visa versa depending on the time of year.

We've met a few folk over the last few years that do it and then over winter in Turkey. It sounds wonderful and I would love to have the courage to do it.

Thank you for all of the above help, we are starting the planning now and will probably drive through the Balkans.

Do you want fully comprehensive motor insurance for all the countries you will pass through, or will you be content just with third party cover?

Fully comprehensive cover for every country may be impossible to obtain, and even third party cover may be difficult . See which of those two levels of cover your current insurer will provide.

But it may be that for certain countries you will have to buy third party insurance (of unknown standard) at a border.

I hope it all goes well.
