I visited this great  site a few years ago, arriving and leaving from the South.  Now i would like to visit from the north, with a caravan.  I know i drove north in the car and think i made a mental note not to take a caravan that way.  Any ideas its only a small van?  TIA.

I had next week in mind after Dunnet Bay.  The noise of the rutting deer was awesome on my last trip.

Pippa, I think you're asking about approaching Altnaharra from the A836/838 on the north coast. Sorry if I’ve misunderstood.

We did that trip with a 6.4m MH using the B871/3 to approach from Bettyhill and the north bound A836 towards Tongue to leave. Both roads had plenty of passing places, although I think they were bigger on the A road, and I think the route would be doable.

If in doubt, you could try ringing the warden.

Thanks Tinny it was the B873/871. I was wondering about.  Good to know what you did.  I think the A836 is a safer bet probably but will call the site.  Thanks.

We came in from Bettyhill last September. The road is a bit narrower and there is further between the passing places than on the A road and as TW says they are smaller. It was fine in the MH but I remember remarking to OH that I wouldn’t have fancied it towing our Unicorn Cadiz, although that including the car was 12 metres long. Logging trucks were using it when we visited and given the amount of timber along the road are likely to be a fairly permanent fixture.

We came down from the north coast when we visited Altnaharra with our previous van, which was about 7m long overall, 4 berth with side dinette bunks and rear shower room, towed by our Volvo 940.

    No problem.

KjellNN. Thank you.  Did you come down the A road from the North?  Or B road from Bettyhill?  My outfit is just over 10m long.

As i am coming from John o' Groats direcrion the B road would be quicker but i would rather arrive in one piece!

We came from Dunnet Bay side after being on Orkney, so it would have been the first road south, which I presume is the B road.  It was not wide, but wide enough!

We came down on the A836 from Tongue with our 7.49m van and although OH was a bit concerned beforehand in fact it was an easy journey with plenty of passing places and very little traffic. Also it’s a beautiful run.
