Smart Metering Trial

Lucky you! I’ve heard it’s ground breaking with the latest of everything to help folk keep up with modern life.👍🏻
It should be ideal for coping with the likes of smart metering, especially when coupled with the matching Pixel phone.

My main reason for using this thread was for info regarding the metering costs involved at Wyatts Covert from anyone willing to share that info. - Would not have gained this knowledge or known there was a tablet available for members use ref metering so thanks to poster H1UBS.
Good luck to all who use the metering system. I feel it could prove costly during the colder months unless one mostly uses gas

The cost details are displayed on the link in the OP’s post N1805, scroll down as they are near the bottom👍

Funny you should ask.
I have not been asked for any feedback from CAMC regarding my experience of the metering trial.... one of the reasons I've given some on this thread !
It does seem odd that they haven't asked or perhaps they just don't value the user experience.

Yes, that’s why I thought using the system, and the way it is priced/offered might both be factors the Club would monitor via feedback.
For example, I don’t think we would have an issue using it (we have the personal devices, and a bit of techy know how to be able to use it), but it’s more the price v discount that would be more of a deciding factor for us. Take up and usage might be influenced by both factors.

I am off to Wyatts Covert soon,so set up £10.00 on my account, this account was easy to set up but I did it on my Acer Chromebook ,with one of those automated computer generated secure passwords and saved it.
This I could access with no problem on my Acer Chromebook.
However I will not be taking this laptop away with me,only my Iphone, went to access this smartmetering link only to find it would not recognise the password on my iphone.
So I have had to alter the password on my iphone on reset my password. Now I can access the link.
One other issue,it would be nice to have an link or an app to take you to the smart metering company, without having to constantly find it through the Wyatts Covert web site.(Unless this can be done somehow already)
Already this £1.00 site fees reduction look way off, however I will report back.

Glad a few people are reporting back how they are finding the new system. It does seem that an App is needed? Hopefully Fozzie will report back again at the end of his trip.

Fozzie, if you've found the webpage you can create a bookmark so that you can access it again later with one click.

I've just returned from the Cherry Hinton Cambridge site and, because i had my aircon running, got asked by one of the staff if I'd be prepared to pay more for using it. Seemed like a random question at the time but presumably this links in with them potentially rolling out smart metering. They said it was for a survey they were undertaking at the site.
If on average, a van/MoHo uses 3-4 kw per day for just the fridge, add to that the lighting, battery charging, heating, cooking, cooling & hot water, then the site fee (reduced) + electrics is undoubtably going to be more than the current site fee. On the lowest reduction of £1 / day they're giving, just the fridge alone costs around £1.60 a day to run. So in peak season you'll end up getting a site fee reduction of £1 and end up paying a lot more than that in additional electric charges.
What next, water meters and waste charges ?

For the first time ever, I have stayed on a CL with metered electric to each pitch. Pound coins! I was horrified at the cost of the electricity. For £5 a day, we had the water heater on, the fridge and cooked on an electric hot plate for no more than 20 mins a day. More than I pay at home when I use washing machine, dishwasher, tumble dryer, freezer and an iron.
I welcome meters, but the savings may not be as much as we think!

How much was the rate per kWh? Some CLs will be paying a much higher rate than the domestic one.
We used one where it was 30p per kWh, we used £5 in total. We stayed 2 nights.
We ran the fridge on electricity, that uses 4 kWH per 24 hours, plus kettle and toaster for breakfasts, microwave once for 20 minutes, electric grill plate once for 30 minutes, and small electric oven once for 35 minutes.
Water we heated only when needed, and used gas as it is faster, plus cheaper as we have refillables.

Update.Finished my two days at Wyatts Covert, I had already completed the form and added £10.00 credit.
On arriving after you have selected pitch, connect hook up lead first, the select “Site” from drop down menu, then select group of bollards from dropdown menu, 45,46,47then select pitch number in my case it was 47, then select start.
On leaving site, you must remember to end you session by selecting “Refund” This is what you have left. In my case it was £5:20
So I had used £4:80 over two days, this was for low wattage kettle, water heating, fridge, tv but run off 12v.
My pitch fees were £49.10 + £4.80 making £53.90 for 2 nights. This is just for 1 adult. The £1.00 per night was already taken off.
Initial impressions are, filling the form in before hand saves stress and time.
They is a laptop available on site if you need it.
The £1.00 pn site deduction looks way off,and people without phones and being tech savvy may struggle.

"to see what system will be used at the next trial site."
Looking at the clubs smart metering page, I can't see anything to suggest that the second trial (at Ashridge Farm towards the end 2023) will use a system different to the one at Wyatts Covert.
Of course, it doesn't say it wont either, so we will have to wait and see...
however, i can't see the club lining up two suppliers and running two totally different systems and then let the members decide which one suits them best...
I imagine the potential 'partner systems' will have started in a 'long list' then quickly whittled down to a 'short list' and may only end up with one in the frame.
again, it's a trial so we will have wait....
will the club give the results of trial 1 before embarking on trial 2?
either way, those who suggest 'the system is not for them' might be struggling going forward if they want to continue with club sites post implementation.
if you don't want to use the system then you'll need to find a way to manage 'off grid' on club sites....or, as the mantra goes, look elsewhere.🤷🏻♂️

I have been to Wyatts and used the Smart Metering trial. I can see that this may result in savings as I used my gas for heating rather than the electricity.
My concern is how the Club would carry out a roll out. If we use an external provider we are locking ourselves into one supplier for the duration of the use of smart metering because they would own the hardware, software and cloud service and restrict its use by third parties. This means it will be very difficult to negotiate reasonable prices going forwawrd.
The alternative is to roll out our own solution with the upfront costs.
Maybe an alternative is to buy a small company that is becoming established in this area and build on that skills base.

I think for the Club, the same as with WiFi, it is easier and less risky to get outside contractors to provide metering services. The company used is also used by other, non Club, campsites. So clearly they have some experience. Did you think the price of electricity was reasonable, say compared to what you pay at home? To me that would be the acid test. If I am paying a similar price to what I pay at home, allowing a bit for a service/standing charge element I would think that reasonable.

I think it was said that the current price to be charged was something like 42-46p per kWh, which is rather more than domestic prices at present. The Club will have entered into a commercial contract for the supply of electricity to the site, usually for a year or more.
My OH is looking at a new contract for our local Guide Hall, they are being offered , by Octopus, a rate of 26.44p +VAT per kWh, with a daily standing charge of 65.42p +VAT, for a 12 month contract.

I think the move to metered pictures is inevitable and sensible. We have all witnessed those who have a 3kw heater burning away in an empty awning. However the bigger problem arises from EVs. Whilst on Culloden site this year I noticed an EV camper van was connected once it was dark. I mentioned it to the warden who confirmed they had not paid the required additional fee. This means we are all having to subsidise those who cheat.

3kw? How do you know, did you check it? Actually, I cannot ever remember seeing a heater in an empty awning.
Charging an EV on site without paying is a form of theft. No doubt the warden took appropriate action.

I don't know how literal the instructions are meant to be, and I know nothing at all about the subject, but the EV charging rules on this website state that charging should be done overnight; if so, then the fact that it was dark (the assumption thus made that it was being done secretively) is neither here nor there.
There's no excuse for theft if it happens; I genuinely wonder, however, if some might just assume that any electricity usage is within the pitch fee and not think to check. I appreciate there's a difference (depending on how long the heater is left on), but if someone thinks it's OK to use a 3 kW heater in an awning they might equally see no issue in charging up their EV. I don't know, I am just speculating. I am not sure how well EV charging charges are publized; I've not seen much either on this website or on sites (though my last site visit was early this year). But I am not making excuses - just wondering if that might explain why it happened. Probably, most people with an EV would think to check, but maybe not all.
I find it difficult to see heaters inside awnings unless it is one of those that glows red. I can't recall seeing it often and never without people present. Goodness knows what the wattage was; are not 2kW heaters much more common? Anyway, I doubt that fraudulent charging of EVs amounts to much of a loss compared to energy usage that some might make a case for being extreme or unnecessary.

I assume you are referring to more sites being closed over winter? The problem is that if the Club keeps sites open over winter that don't cover their running costs the whole membership pays one way or another. I would accept that the cost of electricity over that period adds to making them uneconomic. Perhaps if and when the club goes over to a metered supply for all sites they might reconsider and allow more sites to open but that could take a couple of years to achieve?

I don't ever recall anyone holding a shotgun to my head to stay with the Club. If you don't like it, just leave. There are thousands of caravan sites throughout the UK and many of them stay open during the winter, so it is not as though you don't have many other sites to choose from!

A very good point...there may well be (many?) members who will avoid metered Club sites going forward for a number of reasons...
...don't agree with the principle (what's wrong with how it was before?)
...don't like change
...not comfortable with the IT elements to make it work
...don't agree with the prices charged
...too much hassle
any of the the above might be the catalyst for those who haven't before to check out the vast number of excellent commercial sites that are out there.
it seems to be taking a while to get decent info back about where we are and how things are progressing, an update would be good...
