Has anyone towed a caravan across the bridge from La Rochelle to Ile de Re please?  Are there restrictions if the event of high winds.? Was the stability of your outfit affected by the wind at the height?  Thanks

No idea what the bridge is like in a winter storm but I suppose the authorities would close it to high sided vehicles in wild conditions. We crossed on a summer day without  problems or worries - just very slow traffic and a long queue to get to the toll booths..But we made the mistake of going in August and it was a wonder the island didn’t sink under the sheer weight of people.- we longed for tranquility on the Scilly Isles instead, but,  hey, we live and learn.

Never known it to be closed whenever we've been in France and been over it a few times. As AD states if there was a high wind the authorities would probably close it but you shouldn't any concerns outside of seasons where gales are expected.

The most scary thing about crossing to the island isn't the wind but the bridge toll.

It's not that bad if you are out of high season. For Class 1 and 2 it looks like September 12 to June 19 is Euro 8 and June 20 to September 11 is Euro 16. You only pay to get on as well. When we visited in 2019 we had no desire to leave the island as we found all we wanted on it.

In September 2021 we towed a single axle Coachman 575 (1800kg) with a Land Rover Discovery Sport across the bridge onto Ile de Re. I don't remember seeing any restrictions signposted and we encountered no issues. From memory the bridge runs east to west so a prevailing south westerly wind would be on the front /rear quarter of the outfit each way.

    Hope that helps!

Towed across it this morning coming onto the island, no problems. Been many times before again without issue.

Toll charges are €8 in low season and €16 high season which cover class 1 and 2, only gets expensive if you are hgv.

    Thanks for all your contributions.

Now safely returned to the UK - no problems crossing despite a keen wind on the way in. Wonderful place and looking forward to returning.
