Breakdown Insurance

Brittany Ferries are recommending Voyager Insurance for vehicles travelling in Europe. From what I have read it is similar to what C&M are offering, with a quoted price of £150 less. Naturally it is down to choice, but has anyone experienced or purchased Voyager insurance in the past? Any suggestions, recommendations gratefully accepted.

I wondered the same as we are travelling out with Brittany Ferries this August. When I've worked my way though Q&A along with some documents, it appears that that caravans attached to your car are covered. My concern is they are not attached at the time of an incident or if the caravan has an issue. These are the cases where Red Pennant scores points.

Thank you both for replying. Have always used Red Pennant, and a member of Brittany Ferries, so naturally intrigued with their offer. Will continue with RP I think. Better devil you know. Again Thanks.

Just to back up what others have said, it is very important, to me, of having a "caravan friendly" breakdown service which covers your caravan when not attached to your car. The obvious ones for this are the policies offered by both the clubs, Red Pennant and RAC Arrival.

Be aware though of the Red Pennant small print regarding caravan servicing. This may, or may not, be an issue for you. I attempted to get clarification from the Club but gave up and went with Arrival.

    Have a safe trip.

How do Red Pennant and RAC Arrival compare on price?

For my circumstances I found C&CC/RAC Arrival to be significantly cheaper than Red Pennant.  Although bear in mind the Arrival Overseas Cover is only available as an add on to the standard Arrival UK cover.

For me, Arrival (Ultimate UK plus Annual Overseas Cover) came to approx £260. Mayday Premium plus Annual Red Pennant was approx £330. The other benefit to me is Arrival 90 day maximum trip, compared with Red Pennant 31 days. The cost difference will obviously be far greater if you increase Red Pennant to more than 31 says.

For me it was an was an easy choice. Especially after using Red Pennant for the first time last year and being very unimpressed with their service. The confusion over caravan servicing didn't help either.

Price only comes into consideration when you have to make a claim and see the service that you receive.

On the way back from France a few years ago I was very unlucky to have a double rear blow out on our way home on the autoroute.  Loaded, and with the van on the back we managed to get to an Aire.

After waiting a while for Red Pennant to answer the 24hr emergency number, a very nice lady explained that because France is basically closed on a Sunday I was going to be picked up and looked after - cut a long story short she found us a recovery company who took us to a half decent site, and then took the car away to be looked after until we told them which tyre company had two tyres of the right size in stock, which we could only find the following monday when they reopenned.

First thing monday between same lovely lady and I we found somewhere that had two in stock and the car was taken straight there, and a cab sent to me at the site to take me to it.

The level of service was brilliant - and for that reason whenever we travel abroad now I always take Red Pennant Breakdown out for the trip = wouldnt even look elsewhere.

    Buy Cheap - Buy Twice.

Breakdown recovery on French toll autoroutes is ONLY handled by the contractor operating for the motorway company. Red Pennant and other breakdown companies cannot send out assistance on those roads. They can only assist once you are off the toll autoroute - but of course they will pay the cost of the company who has assisted, and that cost is considerable.
