Hi, we’re hoping to head to Yorkshire for a few days in June and would like to visit Barnsley and Thirsk plus the moors so can anybody recommend a decent CL, preferably with a pub within walking distance that does decent food 🤞

Might be able to help, but a question first if you don’t mind. Do you use your campervan to go out in, or park it up, and either walk or use public transport? I ask because it it will influence any suggestions😁

Barnsley is a bit of a black hole for CLs. There are a couple of CLs not far from Thirsk but tend to be farm sites.

You could try the club site in Thirsk, at the racecourse which is right on the edge of town and you can definitely walk in from there.

    Otherwise check out any independent sites on;

We don’t mind farm sites and do prefer the CL’s to the larger sites to be honest so any recommendations are much appreciated. I can see what you mean about Barnsley as I have looked but can’t find much around there.

Hi, of course I don’t mind you asking lol, we use the camper to go out in as we like to go visiting places whilst in the area.

Thanks😁 I live in South Yorks, and it really is short of nice sites, of any kind. Sadly the best, which was lovely closed last November. It’s a shame as the countryside and places of interest are really good. There are one or two CLs under Doncaster, which isn’t too far away, road links are good. Look under West Yorks as well, as Barnsley is on border, so if you use your Camper, again road links are good. There’s a CCC CS site in Rotherham, which is a mile or so from M1, 15 minutes into Barnsley. Think it’s called Springvale Farm. https://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=11816

As mentioned by Wherenext, Thirsk Racecourse Site might be your best bet, it’s another place (somewhat surprisingly) that lacks sites close to town centre. It’s a lovely town, Helmsley is around 15 minutes away, and there are sites listed under Helmsley. Nice one at Carlton.https://www.caravanclub.co.uk/certificated-locations/england/north-yorkshire/helmsley/carlton-grange/

Parking in Thirsk is easy with a camper, there is a car park on riverside near church. Might be a bit tight in market square, but it’s only 100 metres from that riverside car park. Can’t help with parking in Barnsley, don’t think I have been in last 20 years or so.

There are one or two pub stopovers in South Yorks if you fancy a pub stopover. Most are free, you simply eat or drink in the pub. We have used a few in last couple of years, and for a simple sleepover, we have found some really nice ones. Find them on Searchforsites website. Sitwell Arms, Whiston, Rotherham, half a mile from M1 has good food👍

You might be better looking around Pickering for CLs, there are quite a few nice ones, and some good small private sites as well. Thirsk isn’t far, and it’s a nice drive.

Wow! Thank you so much for the reply, it really helps! I’ll get searching and see what I can find. We’re looking to visit Cannon Hall Farm so may end up finding a one night stopover and then moving on after that towards Whitby and the seaside 👍🏻

The Barnsley area has other sites which are not CLs.if you are willing to widen your search.  Greensprings Touring Park is the one I would go for

That’s almost West Yorks, so definitely take a look in W Yorks section. If you want any other ideas for S Yorks, just let me know. Cannon Hall is ok, but there are far more interesting places. I have found two Certificated Sites (C&CC version of CLs) that aren’t far from Cannon Hall. Woodland View, and Cinderhill. No idea what they are like, so you would need to check out. I think Cinderhill might hold its own Beer Festival, so if you want peace and quiet, you need to check this out😁

If you are looking at Whitby, can recommend a lovely CL, called Ashfield. It’s in a lovely little village called Lockton, very quiet, all you can hear are hooting steam trains and owls😁 It’s around 20 minutes to Whitby, which is very very busy, so it’s a peaceful stop at Lockton. There’s a brilliant pub a 20 minute walk away, has its own CL, but it’s not open at the moment, Fox and Rabbit. There are lots of very nice CLs in the Pickering, Whitby area, so good choice.

If you are heading to Whitby then try Poverty Cottage CL. It's not far to the pub and a 2 mile off road walk into Whitby on a disused old railway line plus easy access to the coastal path.

If you take up ttda's suggestion of looking around Pickering - I can thoroughly recommend Thornthorpe CS (if you're in the other Club), just south of Malton.  We go there regularly and it's beautiful.  In an old orchard, with a stream running through it, a toilet/shower block that would put most hotels to shame, very peaceful, adults only and very dog friendly.

The drive from Malton to Thirsk is one of my favourites in N. Yorks - through Hovingham - up onto the tops and down Sutton Bank - spectacular scenery.  You also pass within spitting distance of Helmsley which is a very pretty little market town and well worth a visit.  There used to be spaces in the car park there for overnight stopping for motorhomes/ campervans but not sure if that facility still exists.

It is truly beautiful around there R&R, and thankfully, there are a lot of very good sites, a mix of provision and prices. The MH parking at Helmsley was suspended last October thanks to the poor behaviour of some visitors, and locals had had enough. I will keep looking to see if it gets reinstated, and will update if it does. You can of course still park up during the day in the huge car park, but anyone visiting Ryedale area needs to be careful no matter what they are using, car, camper or MH. Traffic Wardens are notorious.

Some parts of Yorkshire you can struggle to find a decent site, other parts they are all over and a good mix of small, large, cheap or more expensive.  That site EuroT found looks ok, but I can’t find prices.

Thank you all so much, I’m going to sit and have a search through all the recommendations and feel sure I’ll find something now! I don’t know why I didn’t think of asking on here before! 🤦‍♀️

You are very welcome. By the way, if you want to choose a good avatar name, rather than your number, just go into “my profile” and change it there. Make sure you choose something you like, as it isn’t easy to change👍

Lots of us use CLs and private sites, and will share information for nice places to stay. You can get some good tips from folks who actually live in the areas you might want to visit as well.

    Hope your trip goes well🙂

I can recommend Monks Farm, Sneaton, No.1791 in the Site Directory, for a good CL near Whitby, and there is a grand pub in the village a few 100 mtrs from the site.

For Barnsley you could try Holly Tree cottage at Upper Denby,  07970921824.  it's about 8 mls into Barnsley from there. The owners are Alison and Ashley who will make you very welcome.

We stay there regular to visit our son and family who live in Penistone.

I was going to suggest Monks Farm too.

I saw in the latest magazine that they have a new phone number.

Try https://www.facebook.com/woodlandviewcamping Not  CMC but CCC and close to Barnsley. Also a private site in Durkur Wakefield but they have 4 night minimum called Broadlands Farm.

Not tried either but Woodland View looks the better site.

For walking on the Moors, a lovely CL in Hutton Le Hole. Decent pub in the village. Lovely walks from  the village, or drive "over the Chimney" into Rosedale. The CL is much better than the main CMC site in Rosedale Abbey(The Howard).

Walk to Lastingham, lunch in the excellent pub there, and stagger back to Hutton.

Spent a lot of my childhood on a farm in Rosedale and love the area.

You have just reminded me, The Crown Pub in Hutton Le Hole has camper van spaces and hook ups I think just behind the pub. But check they are still doing overnight stops, it’s been a while since we were last there. Moorland drives up there towards The Lion pub are superb. Lots of walks as well.

I will put on 2 or 3 pounds when we are there for three weeks in June courtesy of the ice cream shop even nearer than the pub.

It's a long time since we stayed there - but Swan Farm at High Hawsker, just outside Whitby (No: 1777 in Directory) is a nice little site on a working farm - with the Hare and Hounds pub at the bottom of the drive.  Fish and Chips on a Friday are excellent! No views to speak of - a high hedge around the site with the Cleveland Way path just the other side of the hedge but it's in a very good location and has easy access.
