Some retailers just want to hang onto your money as long as possible and there really needs to be some legal limits set on the time taken for such refunds.

And Banks...I have just (today) completed my role as LPA and Executor of an Aunts estate... After the 10 weeks wait for Probate to be granted....two of the banks said they would process within 10 to 15 (working) days. The third bank released the funds the following day. The portfolio managers say between 4 to 6 weeks to sell the shares and process the documents..

True to their word, the CaMC have refunded a booking deposit today....exactly 10 days since cancellation.

I think it is probably unfair to lay blame at the electronic systems in use. What is more likely is that organisations have systems where the payment has to be authorised by a human, and probably polocies that the payment will be delayed by so many days beyond when it is due.  Computers do not work only 9 to 5 and take weekends off.
