Calor bottles discontinued

Fortunately I printed out the information on bottle exchange from Calor's web site.
"You can exchange a gas bottle within the same group . . ."
The Small Category is shown as 3.9kg propane, 4,5kg butane, 6kg propane lite, 6kg propane and 7kg butane. No doubt they will try to deny this to anyone without the original Cylinder Refil Agreement as their get out.
So what do they expect to happen to the tens of thousands of the 3.9/4.5kg bottles lying around the country? Landfill, or perhaps people trying to take them apart to use for something else?

This is the type of situation that one would expect that a true "Members Club" would receive help from the Executive and have them make representation to Calor to facilitate any difficulties members of said club may/will encounter in either changing their existing, soon to be defunct, bottles or speaking to alternative suppliers.
This will impact on a large portion of Carravanners and Campervan users.
However, unfortunately, I have little hope of any assistance being forthcoming.

Possible loss of advertising revenue as well. The real answer is refillables although they seem to be anathema to CAMC.

Refillables would be fine if there was wide availabilty of locations that would allow fill of stand-alone bottles.

It will cost a bit though to drive all the way to Portugal just to fill my 6kg calor bottle

The advice euror gave was very appropriate and, after 47 replies, showing little or no alternative, appears even more so.
I have spoken to fellow campers who were totally unaware that Calor was not the only gas cylinder supplier, indeed some thought the contents of their cylinder was "Calor Gas" rather than Propane, and one or two have even come back to say thanks.
Calor is simply a cylinder brand-others are available and often cheaper.

OH popped into our local Calor Gas agency (it’s a very big one) this morning. They only found out about the withdrawal of the 3.9kg cyclinders last week, via information from Calor, so are not best pleased. They had been experiencing a lack of refilled smaller cylinders for some time, so had an inkling something was happening, but it was only confirmed last week. We have a 6kg cyclinder in caravan, so OH is going to see if he can fit it in. If not, we shall have to look at something else. LPG isn’t hard to get at the moment around us, so some research needed.

😁 Great result for us, we can fit not one but 2 X 6kg bottles into MH gas locker, and we already have one to swop. I hope others are as lucky🤞

We can fit 6kg propane in as well Ttda but we also use the smaller 4.5kg Butane bottles as 3 season bottles. Not rushing to seek out alternatives at the moment as the 6kg Lite that we have still has plenty in it, probably 2 or 3 winters worth. Butane stock level also good from memory.
Gives us time to source future needs.
Edit - Meant to thank Paulmold for his Opening Post.

We currently have 2 calor lites one full one empty. The full one will last us a couple of years of normal use as we don't tend to heat the van on gas.
However this morning I checked out our local stockist just incase. No problem they currently have 6kg bottles, refill cost £31.50.
Checked with our local Flogas depot, they do have 6kg bottles but as we are not currently a customer (we are for bulk LPG) and don't have one of their bottles they can't help. They are only able to do a swap if you currently have one of their bottles.
That is not good news for those who can't get calor.

I suspect they are trying to be fair to their existing clientele as Calors news may have taken them by surprise as well.

When Calor started causing problems with supply of the 6kg Lite bottle I discovered that a 13kg bottle would fit into gas locker on my Bailey Senator. Weight of bottle is a little bit more than two Lites, but less than two standard and gas is slighly greater. Works well and I have a small Camping Gas on the other side of the auto-changeover to keep us going while replacing the 13 kg so noseweight kept reasonable.

Anyone worried about nose weight would do well to switch to Gaslites. Anyone who uses a lot of gas would do better to switch to refillables. Exchange gas bottles work out at about three times the price for the gas you get compared with pumped gas for a refillable.

like many campervanners our 2001 Autosleeper Topaz gas locker is made specifically for the 4.5/3.9 Calor size (x2). We are fortunate to have two full bottles that may last this season, I think the best thing is to see if Calor change their minds in the next few months, and if not then source a non Calor bottle and change the gas locker to suit.
If I have to do the latter I will never buy any Calor gas again, supply over the last three years has been diabolical. Hoping it won’t come to this

It's not always easy to change to refillable bottles due to lack of suppliers to get them refilled. Depending on where you live.
We fitted gaslow on our previous MH, it had an external filler so no problems anywhere getting a refill.
However had it been a caravan and safe fill bottles we wouldn't have found it so easy to get a refill.
Unless you use a lot of gas the cost to fit these type of systems aren't generally worth it. I know we never benefitted from it due to our low usage. We did it for continental touring rather than buying a bottle over there.

We took our empty 3.9kg propane to Morrisons this afternoon, and exchanged it for a 6kg propane, no problems. Hope information is useful for others.

Just having a paper sort out of filing cabinet and in the Caravan file came across several original hire documents including the original Butane small cylinder bottle acquired on 30/08/1990 for £16 plus 15%VAT.
Apparently I will get 25% back if returned before 12 year deadline. I have 3 others but no chance of seeing any money back.

I assume that’s a joke. Your recycling centre is a far safer way of disposing of them.👍🏻

See my post Birdseye. Refunds are or at least were given with depreciating percentages up to 12 years but you'll need a copy of your contract.
As TW says I also hope you were joking in which case use the emojis. You'll probably get a few bob from a scrap merchant. The UK has enough of a litter problem as it is.
