As you suggest, TDA, it’s mindset and adjusting ways of doing things to achieve the desired result.

I’m surprised to read Euro's post because he’s told us many a time how he travels light in his Eriba with no water containers etc. AD on the other hand is, by his own admission, a 'kitchen sink' traveller so I can understand him not taking to a smaller MH.

"…..large garage area for bikes and the other stuff that we all find indispensable"

Actually, no. We don’t find items such as bikes indispensable, have never had or wanted a van of that layout and have not missed the storage space of a garage. Don’t forget, we’re all different and one person's way is not the way of choice for others. Each to their own👍🏻

Thankyou to everyone who has posted and great that it has stayed on topic.

I have to say that you have given us a great deal to think about it is really worth while asking the MH community for their opinions.

We have much to think about and lot of looking about hopefully we can find a MH that fits albeit I'm sure with a comprise or two.

If push comes to shove we can always just buy a new caravan and dream 😁

Good luck, we have had a pvc and now a small coach built both under 6m and with good lay outs, usable washrooms etc. Both have been easy to use on and off sites. We had caravans previously which we enjoyed too. You have to choose which option suits you and your life style with a few adjustments along the way. smile

Merely a turn of phrase as I'm sure you realise, David. We do our long trips in different ways and we're all happy. What could be better?😀

No it's just an expression and it does not imply any guilt about anything, that's just what you posted

I'm not sure why the length of time being away has any correlation with roughing it or what ones takes with you? With us the only thing that changes with the amount of time away is the amount of everyday clothes, well up to a point then we pack more washing tablets,  but everything else equipment wise stays the same.

Pretty much the same although we would take an awning if staying on one site for any length of time. We would not find a campervan comfortable on long trips especially in a country not renown for good weather.

Our toilet facilities can be used in two different sizes, one large and one half the size depending how we partition it off.

That's a clever feature you have there with the washroom PD!

Is that just on MH's I'd certainly be interested in a feature like that.

My motorhome is custom built, the layout to my design, but I have seen standard production models with similar features. You just need a toilet area with double doors that either allow one door for access to the smaller area or open both doors in a manner to partition off the area to have a larger facility. Hope you follow that.

In my current motorhome the toilet facility is towards the rear of the motorhome on one side and is equipped with bi fold doors which when fully opened exposes the full width of the toilet and shower facility and a sliding doors can be closed across the width of the motorhome to shut off this larger compartment from the living area.

I've certainly experienced four season many times in summer in the UK, and especially when touring in Scotland when we got snow once in the highlands in late May.

What you're describing is nothing special for UK tourers and happens all the time, I recall one Easter when we had over 20C one day and ice a few days later. We find that towels and other things can be washed and dried in one day, probably the only day we spend on site in a long tour.

Like I said the only difference is the amount of washing powder one has to stock up on

Yes David but, I keep duplicates and more of washable goods etc in the motorhome all the time along with some clothing and footwear, we only ever have to add to these depending on the length of trip and where we are going. However we do not carry two different weights of duvets. As a general rule it does not make much difference to our load as to whether we are away for 2 weeks or 3 months. Its only on two to three days trips we would be light on clothing.

Same for us, although we only do 6 weeks not 3 months. However, it’s really only the amount of cloths that vary over just going for a week. As CS says when going away here, particularly the north of Scotland in September / October, you have to be prepared for everything. All other equipment remains in the van. Oh except for the rotary dryer, we didn’t bother taking that to Scotland  and used the tumblers. Invaluable in Provence though, where soaking wet towels dried in 30 minutes.😂

We did it in a thirty year old van, a mere 13ft as well, along with three terriers. You adapt, compromise, we certainly weren’t roughing it. Nellie is the master of this kind of living, yet manages to move around every week or so. You tour how you want to, doing your own thing. It’s perfectly easy to adapt to a MH, but it takes a bit of thought and testing so that a big spend doesn’t go wrong.🤔😁

The reason people consider changing from a caravan to a motorhome are many and varied, I am sure. I would suggest that those who are perfectly happy with their caravan and it meets all their needs find it difficult to understand why someone would change. Sometimes people thinking about changing don't always know why they are thinking of changing themselves, it's an idea to be investigated. Very often those in the thinking stage are likely to be those that tend to want to be on the move, perhaps only staying at each site for a few days and then moving on. That style of travel is ideally suited to a motorhome. If that is your style as a caravanner it is an easy swap to the motorhome lifestyle. Clearly for those that stay long term in one place a motorhome is probably not the best option. The biggest decision anyone thinking of changing has to make is the size and layout which is clearly what the OP is thinking about. Just because you have a smaller motorhome does not mean you can't go on longer trips but it does take a bit more organising. I am perfectly happy to use public transport, especially as I have free bus pass, just a shame it can't be used in Scotland and Wales! Even when had the caravan we would often use buses or trains rather than trying to find somewhere to park in an unfamiliar town or city.

Can’t disagree with any of that DK. Once we get back to being able to do weeks at a time away,, we might go back to van and leave it for a long holiday down in Cornwall. We did this for 10 years or so, and there’s no doubt that for us, a van is a better option down there, as we do love to get away from the crowds, and that means tiny, tiny lanes, out of the way coves. We did manage to get to Caerhays Beach, Porthluney in our small MH, parking up next to beach, but some would be impossible to reach. We don’t do the big busy beaches.

Hello to all posters on this.

You have definitely helped us decide on what is right for us at the moment.

I am sorry to say that today we have been and purchased a new caravan, I feel slightly guilty as you have all put in so much to help us decide, maybe in years to come we may join the MH gang.

Hopefully you do not feel like you all wasted your time, this is the great thing about the discussions page.

Thanks again to all, maybe we will get to see you sometime on a site 😁👍

PS enjoy whatever you use and wherever you go.

Motorhomes can be an expensive mistake, you have to be very sure that is the direction you want to move in. It's certainly not wasted discussion as it could also be useful to those watching but not commenting. Hope you enjoy the new caravan.

Good to know you have made the best decision for you👍 The last thing you want is to make a very expensive mistake, and then try to live with it. Hope everything works out ok for you😁
