For my part confidence didn’t come into it, the rig was 40’ long, a pain to manoeuvre down to an area of desired quiet I wanted, a pain to reverse, took up way too much room, a time consuming pallava to stop it being stolen & an eyesore on the drive🙁

Like many I’m at a loss to understand that accusation of aggressive behaviour, it makes no sense to me. The only thing I can think of is that it is a tribal hang over from yesteryear when caravans ‘ruled the roads’ and when all that joined the club had such. I remember the days when a campervan on site was a real novelty and even then a few questions were asked as to if these really fitted the criteria for membership. When we purchased our first motorhome you would be lucky to see more than a couple on a site. Never in fifty years have I ever witnessed aggressive behaviour attributed to ownership of a motorised caravan, a few sideways glances yes but rudeness never. Today ownership must be close to parity between the two.

As you and Rocky say, MH numbers have increased and I noticed several on the road here yesterday but only one caravan. Those MHs really didn’t strike me as making an "aggressive takeover" - it’s laughable.
When I first saw the title of the OP, I was convinced it was going to be about someone's 'driving behavior'

Thanks for sharing👍🏻. I don’t see why anyone needs confidence to set off without booking it’s just a case of moving from one place to another. If one is full you go to another one & so on🤷🏻♂️. If there’s no room at the inn you use a lay-by👍🏻. I’ve done it numerous times. 40’ may well be a std size as articulated trucks are but not down winding lanes looking for seclusion. It’s ok on sites that cater for those folk liking crowds & people but a lot of the time I don’t. I agree they all have their pro’s & cons but Cvans are mainly cons in my experience.

Moho’s have the advantage over Cvans when it comes to an overtake I’ve noticed. On the main East coast road North I’ve not seen much stupidity re LV’s. I’ve seen some from std vehicle motorists refusing to follow a lumbering Cvan but not much desperation to overtake a Moho👍🏻

We have had motorcaravans in the past, but are essentially caravanners. With the advent of electric vehicles, I can see the possibility that motor homes will become more popular than towing a caravan. In the EV world, there is the question of whether battery power will ever provide adequate range between charges. Also, will charging stations provide enough parking space for a car-and-caravan outfit? We are now in our mid-to-late 80’s, so are likely to give up caravanning before being faced with these questions.
But, as EV’s become the norm, and eventually the only choice, I can imagine that caravans could become dinosaurs, and even operating a motorhome be quite a different matter than anything we might currently have in mind.
One saviour for the caravanning side of things could be if hydrogen fuel cells become a standard feature for the future.

Setting off without booking is our modus operandi. We are chilled out tourers, with van or MH. Occasionally a tent. Life on the edge………..😁

We have been known to do it with hotel rooms as well…..😁 That last minute “if you don’t sell it to me, you won’t get any other offers…..🤣”

Please dont forget that every car park that has a height barrier installed prevents campervans and motorhomes visiting for a day out. Where that is the case we cant visit, from a camp site, so dont spend money in that area. Possibly wont go to that campsite because we cant get where we want to go. Not all campervans and motorhomes parked in carparks are staying overnight, and even fewer are involved in unsavoury activity. To listen to & read what some write you would think that all motorhome and campervan drivers and passengers are pariahs.

Hja-only some campervans can’t get thru height barriers a lot are below 6’-6”. Quite a lot of campervans are 4 berth Ford transit sized vehicles👍🏻

True. Ours will fit but most Fiat/Peugeot based PVCs won’t as they tend to be nigh on 3m high.

Some have an open mind & willing to entertain factual logic others have the mind of a gin trap that engages at the slightest mooting of change🤷🏻♂️. Fear not for they are few👍🏻😊

It hasn't just impacted motorhomes. The blanket imposition of 'coastal' car park charges has meant that it now costs our parish congregation to attend church. It also imposes substantial costs on the boat owners at the sailing club who, in the winter months, spend considerable time working on them. It's not just a nominal charge like many coastal car parks elsewhere. Doubtless to keep Mr Woodward in the manner to which he is accustomed. Sledgehammer & nut.

I have a camping face, happy clappy if it’s dry, miserable if it’s raining.
Caravan face….happy on a CL all alone, watchful and on best behaviour on a Club Site, making sure we don’t fall foul of any rule, regulation, expectation. We don’t salute the Club badge any more though😄
Motorhome…….happy, happy, happy, our own travelling cafe, loo, bird hide, library, cinema, bike hut, dog boarding kennel, and beach hut🤩🤩🤩
My stuck at home face (current) isn’t pretty though😢

sensible !!!, rock up put your bags down, perhaps source some food /restaurant/or take your own, get the fire lit sorted, am considering parking my van and doing this as hobby both here and over there

No mention of the tents which are permitted on some sites - so are we do deduce then that though allowed they are not welcome?

On tonight’s site 78% of the pitches are occupied by motor caravans! All looked friendly. Last night on another site the situation was similar.
Only saw two tugged caravans on the A1 over a two and a half hour journey.( I suspect from observation that only one was ‘on holiday’). 16 motorhomes were seen.Haven’t witnessed any aggression from any and practically all the motorhomes we passed on the road gave a friendly wave.👋

We are excited about having a single night out next week in MH. Going to Banbury to pick up a cycle for me, so it will be a Britstop pub and a day at Gaydon I think.
Been to pick up new car today, up A1 and then A162. Didn’t see a single caravan on the road, but quite a few Campers and MHs.
