Am I an outdated fuddy duddy?
Good afternoon Campers.
I have been camping in tents, a caravan and more recently a campervan for the last 50 years. I was taught and have always believed that it is rude to walk across or through other people's pitches. This weekend, we are staying at Henley Four Oaks and we have recently stayed at Cirencester, Tewkesbury and Moreton-in-Marsh.
I am somewhat saddened that in all cases, people have walked right through our pitches, within feet of our van, to take a shortcut to wherever they are off to.
People are close enough to peer in through our windows.
Am I right in thinking this is rude and inconsiderate behaviour? Or am I just being old-fashioned in these enlightened times?

Graham, it appears to me that the Brits have lost our hard earned reputation for many courtesies in very recent years. Had several trips to Europe recently and I’m ashamed to say that many over there are far more respectful in their social behaviours. What has gone wrong? Tinny has directed you to a thread but this crops up regularly as an observation in other forums too.

No you are certainly right! It is rude, inconsiderate and more!
This has been discussed many times and it keeps on happening and whatever the reason it is not unacceptable. If I recall correctly the club does give guidance on this but it's either not read or just ignored.
I think the best way is to have to politely ask them not to do it or even have a word with the wardens.

You are indeed correct. Unfortunately we have found it a lot more common since we’ve had a MH. I guess it’s because there is less on the pitch. If available we always look for a pitch with a barrier, such as a hedge behind.

Some are irritated by it, some aren’t -but it’s the design and layout of some sites which lead to it happening. You might be happier if you pitched at the site perimeter rather than the centre - or chose a different style of site altogether.

That is just not true, the design and layout has nothing to do with it. Anymore than cars having the ability to go past a speed limit causes speeding.
It is happening because won't respect the rules and their fellow campers and/or if those rules are not enforced or the behaviour is not challenged.

I think that's the idea of being on holiday the chance to chill out but it perhaps gets difficult for the OP to do that with people walking on your pitch?

I have no issues with cutting across pitches. I don’t think you are rude just living in the past. I’d love to buy beer at 1970’s prices but life changes with the years. You rent your space for x days & that is it. By getting stressed you are taking away from your own holiday/break. I’ve met folk & talked quite a while as they cut thru the pitch I was renting it has happened many many times too🤷🏻♂️

If I wanted to talk to someone, as folk have done to us, enquiring about our RV, what we think of it etc. I would go an introduce myself to them, as they have done to us. Not just cut across their pitch because it is a shorter route to the facilities. That’s just plain rude.

I think the design and layout DO sometimes contribute to people cutting across a pitch. We've been on a pitch at Hawes, many years ago, where there were another couple of pitches diagonally behind ours. Rather than walking on the site road, the people on one of those pitchess just cut diagonally across from their pitch, across the grass, and onto ours, to then walk along the raod to where they were going. It must have saved then a few yards and a few seconds
And there are other CAMC sites I can think of where I've seen people walk from their pitch across others, en route to the toiletblock, Wharfedale for one.1 -
They weren’t introducing themselves I talked to them. My initial thought re CAMC members was-aloof, stiff & antisocial so I talked to them(on my pitch) some continued availing themselves of the shortcut without interaction but most relaxed👍🏻. If we all maintained your attitude life would be void of new experiences & friends🤷🏻♂️. In Yorkshire everyone is a friend until they prove otherwise.

I do believe that you are not a fuddy duddy as it is a big bug bear of ours no matter where you pitch people should respect your space.
How would people feel if a stranger walked through their garden or driveway to reach the front door of their property, not so happy I'm guessing. 🤔

Sorry to Rocky 2 buckets as a fellow Yorkshire man I have to agree with SteveL, I have paid for that little piece of ground and I do not want people just walking through it without good reason.
Just a case of simple curtious manners needed whilst away from all.

I think folk are allowed have different opinions and it sounds to me as if East Yorkshire wins on friendliness and a laid back approach. 🤝

Friendliness doesn’t really come into it. That wide area alongside our MH has an EHU cable and often a TV cable going across it, both of which can be tipped over and damaged, particularly in the dark. Plus if on a service pitch there is a colapz tube to the drain, not easily seen as grey and although resilient in most directions, it does not like being stood on by a size 11.

I think that you have rented your pitch and it is exactly that, your pitch, and shouldn't be walked on by others, but then I am old!
On one occasion the man 'behind' us walked through our pitch for the first two days. That evening he locked up and left his car window open and it started to pour with rain. Much against hubby's wishes I went and knocked on his door and told him. He didn't walk through our pitch again so he obviously knew it was wrong.

I once saw somebody take a short cut through another's awning and I had someone trip over my caravan step. Now those true examples are showing folk acting totally inappropriately but they are a far cry form someone walking over the edge of a pitch for what may be a very good reason. I don't think a blanket anti attitude to all pitch crossers is a reasonable one.
