    It looks as though Helmsley has gone for good. Height barrier now in place 6.30pm to 6.30am.

    'Popular' touring spots, here or over there mean loads of visitors and, certainly in France, this will mean folk being pretty close together. We had a couple of lovely days at Capbreton in the spring but the tightness of the parking would put many off.

    at the other extreme, folk just seeking a pull in from the main route for an overnighter and dinner, would likely find many village Aires with 5-10 spaces and the visitor being the only van there. This, too, can put some folk off.

    the Camping Car Park network seems to provides a happy median, sensible spacing, barrier security, booking (if desired), services (incl hook up at some/all locations) at a good price (approx €10-€15). Plenty of takers and few abusers, so is it the country?...the culture?...do the same folk abuse these efforts in the uk but happily abide when overseas?

    I don't know but it's a real shame we can't seem to get it right...for 'our' customers.

    This is the Kircudbright Aire, I think the sleepers were fixed in place on our visit. Lots of room for even the largest of MHs. This side of the wooden sleeper in the photo is access to drive over waste, but this is where the person decided to pitch up, blocking access to all services.  There is another large area to pitch up free about 150 metres away, but these three have hook ups. Fees go to help local swimming pool. Anyone can fill, empty for a small fee.

    Second photo is Kirroughtrees Forestry Site in D&G. Again, lots of space, facilities, including loos and showers open in day are just out of shot. No fill and empty though. Think this was £8 for night. Gloriously quiet, and stunning morning views. Caravans are welcome to stay here for a night as well.

    Canterbury is similar, I seem to recall.

    here is an aire we used this spring, close to a village, better spacing than Gloucester and Canterbury, hedges, and free.

    Sorry, no. It's Saint-Brice-en-Coglès in France. I showed it to illustrate that you don't need huge spacing or much more than a large parking space to create a clean, safe, area adjacent to a lovely village.

    a sign board in the Aire listed nine other Aires run by the same 'council' fairly close by.
